i've made a lot of progress today but i'm getting a bit tired. this is my largest ship to-date, at 464 meters long and 7 decks tall. these are just the two biggest decks. i finished the bottom deck and i'm about halfway done with the sixth deck.

There's a lot wrong but the biggest issue is the faces. The easiest way to quickly boost appeal will be to fix those up. Here's a quick little edit to get the point across but you need to work on facial balance and getting the parts in the right spots.

Also give Shiina a penis.

If you want to draw anime then just start drawing anime immediately. Honestly that applies to everything in life, not just drawing. If you want to do X then you have to do X, don’t waste time doing Y because you think it’ll prepare you for X.
>>
>>7960487
If you want to learn how to draw then yeah. You dont study the artist you like, you study their their masters, which leads back to bridgeman. Once you get to /int/ then you study artists you like.
A bad foundation will always show though your art. Bridgeman is that foundation.

Actually the most important thing is that you hate your own work and you remain perpetually dissatisfied with it so you have the drive to improve.
Once you get complacent it’s all over.
Taste is the one thing you can’t really teach. It’s what separates the hopeful from the hopeless. If you have that internal detector that tells you “no, this is no good” then there’s at least a chance you might eventually correct yourself and produce something worthwhile. But if you turn that detector off and you start thinking “yeah, this looks fine” then you’re done for.

>>
>>7960556
i try to not be super critical of my work because im still a beginner but i can definitely tell that theres plenty of room for improvement (im >>7960526 ) and i try to identify my mistakes and correct them. i stopped making all art almost completely for a few years because i was too critical of whatever i made and always hating the outcome just discouraged me and that combined with some other factors sucked every bit of motivation out of me.
i dont wanna permabeg myself but i would quit again if i didnt allow myself to be a little bad at it

File: ludditeswonned.jpg (58 KB, 691x647)

I know that from here I get better doing more studies, but my problem is completely a work flow issue.
This was three one hour sessions and at a certain point I just gave up and fucked up my layer management so bad I had to just merge it and wrap it up. I used various references (the light was not consistent in each one), but my work flow is genuinely so fucking bad and I'm comping back from a long dry spell of and have completely forgotten my techniques. I used to be able to value paint male bodies very fast, I could do a whole upper torso in a rough value paint in a few minutes. I don't draw a lot of females. The sharpness of a low body fat male is just easier IMO. I coped by just making everything very soft.
Can you guys explain your workflows? Like I'm very aware that all I need to do is more studies but I'm pretty much winging painting, cause sketching was easy I just used two default brushes and two easer brushes, that was it, but now I have to deal with a lot more bullshit. The worst part is trying repair something I basically cannot.

Is it not working? I thought it was visually interesting, is the appeal too low for it to it work? Also she's meant to be an orc but I didn't define that enough I guess for her in particular. What's the better ratio of facial features? More like this?

>>7960882
I haven't been drawing much because I've been busy yeah so there's just nothing to post
>>
>>7960902
When I meant wonky I meant things like alignment of features and perspective. For example, the orc girl's mouth is unnaturally crooked for such a neutral expression and her browline on the camera right eye doesn't really make sense. It's kind of like you draw the right thing in isolation (eye, nose, mouth) but put together it's like you're playing pin the tail on the donkey while drunk

I'm not sure if any of this is intentional or not. If not, mirror your canvas by taking a pic with your phone and flipping every so often.
>>
>>7960906
Oh yeah the right eye was totally fucked because of a wrong pen move and I just shaded it out and said fuck it
I think what's going on is I'm trying to be more ambitious with angles instead of drawing on a flat surface but there's a learning curve so things are distorting and focusing on visual interest over accuracy when doing that is going to fuck it
I think I need to put a pencil sketch under and flip it before I draw in with ink
Regarding the mouth that was just an epic fail
The flipping thing is really good advice I think I need to actually do a sketch, flip it then check before inking. I keep heading straight into using a pen with only loose pencil underneath at most
>>
Hey, do you know any good guides for actually learning clip studio paint? I've basically only used the g-pen and fill tools so far, and now I'm trying to color detailed pupils, but I'm completely stuck
>>
>>7960910
also another observation is some of this problem is coming from (not drawing for several weeks) but also scale. I tried flipping my smaller drawings that are my typical scale and the features/perspective are coming out more accurate, which means I'm struggling to see at a greater scale because I'm focusing too much feature by feature. I think the only way to fix this is just to try drawing larger so I get used to it. Even a drawing that is bad/I didn't post because it was bad seems to have more visual accuracy than the larger drawings, I guess because I haven't drawn large in a year? (ex. is what I didn't post because it's bad, but after flipping it I've realized it's still better than whatever the fuck happened with the orc, flipping that was insane, holy fuck. like unimaginably worse than I could have imagined)
>>
>>7960916
Well the problem with direct inking is that you need to do all of the construction, gesture, and guidelines in your head if you don't want the drawing to look messy. A light pencil undersketch will undoubtedly help your accuracy, but you'll likely end up losing expressiveness and gesture especially if you get too caught up in tracing your sketch carefully. Finding a balance between structure and expression is hard.
>>
>>7960918
yeah I've always put structure on the back burner because I can't stand stiff art (personal preference, no hate to anyone, it's just not my cup of tea, even if it's by a professional artist if I perceive it as stiff I can't appreciate it) and tried to be as loose as I can because if something is stiff I can't tolerate it, which is why my sketches are so loose. do you think the only way to find the middle ground is just trial and error? sorry for asking so many questions, I don't get helpful critique often so I'm trying to absorb as much of it as I can.
I think that if I at least make sure there's a midline? features would have more alignment, and my theory on how to find a midline would just have to be studies. because to me it looks like a lot of what's going on is features are falling away from the middle of the head and not following the midline at all, so they're all spaced on different parts of the orc. like the mouth, brow eye.
>>
>>7960922
Experimentation is the solution for everything in this hobby.
A simple ball and crosshair might be all you need for heads to place your features right without needing to murder your gesture, but it wouldn't hurt to experiment with heavier construction-based techniques. You can choose what techniques you want to keep and when to use them, you don't need to follow a rigid framework.
>>
>>7960923
alright. im thinking maybe I should try the Loomis ball + cross and maybe some more complicated Loomis heads just to see. usually if I do a pencil sketch it's just a shape outline and there's no midline but there was a point when I was trying to utilize more Loomis and I think I should go back to that (at the time it was failing me because it wasn't what I needed then, so I stopped)
I need to be less afraid of trying things like you said, maybe try a few different techniques for constructing heads and see what is most helpful without ruining the flow. I'm super gesture heavy in what I care about so trying construction on heads can be pretty intimidating but it's worth it in the long run, I guess. Thanks.

part of the reason this looks awkward is because it's very strange to place your arms so that the triceps faces straight forward
the natural movement of the arms is for the elbow to swing outward, so that both the biceps and triceps are visible
also the angle is way to high to be natural / comfortable
try the pose yourself and you'll notice this

I'd say your colors look crisp but your linework needs improvement. They feel stiff which in turns makes the entire composition feel wooden. I know it can be uncomfortable for some folks but try to rely more on the movement of your forearm(from your elbow) rather than just your wrist when you work on your lines, its similar to how whenever you use the selection tool to isolate an area you want to fill/paint, in the long run is better to just free hand it with the lasso tool and go over all the curves and bends and straight lines that way, I've found its a great exercise for developing dexterity.

Perhaps also work some more on anatomy and textile physics, with a special emphasis on folds/drapery, other than that its a solid attempt, hope that helps somewhat, WAGMI bro.

True. I don't draw women of this size or bodytype because it doesn't appeal to me. You can simply resize them to your preference and it should be fine.
>>
>>7961084
Hi megasch_/megaethernal.
I like Loomis and Krenz personally. These were a good start and I always keep coming back to their methods one way or the other.
One tip I can give you is to always check for at least 3 parallel lines on the body to get the "vibe" of the perspectives in addition to checking any rectangular structures and seeing where they converge. This in combination with drawing the body from extreme angles regularly, thinking of cross contours can help you greatly. Proportions will always be a bitch, though so unless I'm doing quick redlines like this one I always try to check using 3D models, photography etc. Good luck on your illustration mentorship btw.
>>
>>7961091

>>
>>7961093
By Loomis, I actually mean all of his books. His books actually serve different purposes.

Fun with a pencil shows you the basics of perspective and figures together, and even projecting floor plans and cast shadows.
Creative Illustration shows you how to compose your thumbnail plans based on flow lines and values.
Figure Drawing For All it's Worth shows you the anatomy, planes and general construction both for the head and figure. If it's good enough for Hide, Krenz and Murata then it's good enough for me.
I like Anatomy for Sculptors for a more specific deep dive on anatomical forms but Loomis and specifically Krenz is more than enough for the overall mannequin, which is 90 percent of what makes a successful figure anyways. If anime is more your thing Krenz basically repackages pages straight from Loomis, so doing both would help anyone I think.
>>
I cannot grind Loomis or Drawabox. My brain fundamentally does not give me the dopamine required to do so. I cannot ever ever EVER self-motivate without externalizing all of the rewards. This is why I've never been able to grind it. My ADHD makes it fundamentally impossible. No matter what meds I'm on, no matter how good I feel.
>>
>>7961091
Gotcha. Yeah I don't ever do parallel lines and I only do cross contours sparingly, so maybe I should get into the habit of using those more. Also, do I follow you on social media already? I can't remember if you ever posted your profiles. And thanks!

Try to simplify into the biggest general shapes you can inside the frame. Attached might be a bit too busy to be a good example, but hope the idea comes across

I really like this. The palette, the background with the petals, the hair layers, the boob squish, the hands, pretty good. I like the way they're holding each other.

Some parts could be better, though. The shading is pillowy and I'm not sure where the light source is, and I don't really like how you did the crotches, but that might be a preference thing. Right girl's butt outline and asshole are a bit off, and I really don't like using hard lines to separate the inner thigh and crotch. The red pussy holes are knda crass too desu, drags the piece down a bit for me. I kinda can't tell whether you drew the vagina too high, or their hips are turned upward, remember that the pussy is on the underside, not the front.

>>
File: historia colored.jpg (530 KB, 2480x3100)
530 KB JPG
Hey, what's a good way of practicing line art digitally? It's so much harder than on pencil. I spent nearly 2 hrs on this shitty unfinished drawing of Historia, and nearly all of that time was spent trying to get the shape of her head right (which I fucked up and will need to redraw). Shit looks so ass. I had my stabilizer set to 13, is that too low? Does getting a stand for the tablet help?????
>>
>>7961194
use a better brush with a stabilizer to make the lines look less scratchy.
for this specifically tho i think u need to give her more cranium and hair volume on the back of her head. that sideburn bang to (our) right should also be over top the ear, not vice versa.
>>
>>7961194
>practicing line art
trace manga pages
preferably in the original resolution
it's the only thing that really worked for me
>>
File: Stabilizer- more hair.jpg (365 KB, 1000x1268)
365 KB JPG
>>7961194
>stabilizer
It's a matter of tuning up the parameters to your liking or needs. There you have what I use, some standard hard brush and the "dynamic brush tool" selected, with those settings, (mass 0.5) there more mass the slower the brush is, I draw fast so for me it is set in 0.5, which makes you draw quite fast. The drag is on "max" (1).
About the head, it is always the hair, give it more hair on top an it will fix most of the problems. Then the ear should be further on the side of the head. For the lips is preferable to use just colors not a "line wrap around" it never looks good. Don't mind all of the rest I'm just fooling throwing lines around.
The only way to get used to throw lines with confidence is to just keep at it, it is an acquired habit through practice. People here laugh at fun anon, but, he's putting the work doing those exercises.

Confdent linework is something that mostly comes with time and practice. It's not really something that you address and fix overnight.

Also FYI, the stabiliser's purpose is to smooth out any micro-wobbles in your pen strokes that result from the tablet surface being slippery. Keep the setting low, maybe around 10, and don't use it as a crutch to fix your wobbly line work.

Here's the problem and something that people are fundamentally not understanding. Because I have ADHD, I fundamentally cannot ever ever ever self motivate. It is completely impossible. My brain literally does not have the neurochemical composition and structures that are grown enough to do it. The only way someone with ADHD can do anything is by externalizing all the rewards. It's easy to delude yourself and think that because there are other successful people with ADHD that means you just have to "try harder" but that's not true. They got that way because of external circumstances and not because they were fundamentally motivated to do so. This is why just recommending me drawing guides isn't going to work. Because my brain will want to just get it done quickly and not take my time.

No amount of medicine has made this go away. No amount of exercising has made this go away. No amount of dieting has made this go away. No amount of just telling myself to do it has made this go away. I've tried literally all of it and none of it has worked.

Just recommending guides will not work because at the end of the day, there's no simply no motivation for me to sit down and study, because my brain doesn't like it.

First, no one cares. Also, you definitely have depression or anxiety, so go check yourself. Additionally, I have an extreme level of ADHD myself, and, by itself, it is not a block to self-motivation. For adults, it mainly causes attention issues, not motivation issues. Lastly, ADHD is not affected by "external circumstances", so you should educate yourself on the issue you claim to have.
>>
>>7961495
I'm on antidepressants and it still hasn't done anything. I've even switched to one that gave me more energy.

Also, ADHD is absolutely affected by external motivators. That's the only one way that people with ADHD can even do anything. That's one of the reasons why body doubling works and people giving you rules and consequences also works. Motivation is a constant issue with people that have ADHD. It's nearly impossible to make yourself do anything unless someone makes you.

I can't study, I can't grind. I can't do much of anything and no amount of trying to self motivate myself to do any hobby in about 12 years has made me do anything. The only time I was able to do anything was under pressure. This is just what ADHD does.

it's not meant to be rude

Alright, I'm going to give you my secret method. It worked for me and I still do it. I draw virtually daily for at minimum 3 hours, even on workweeks. I can get 8 hour sessions out of this method too.
>pick a timeslot of your day where you're guaranteed to have free time to draw
>draw during that timeslot daily
>you can draw outside of that timeslot if you want, but always make sure to draw within the timeslot
>you're building a habit
>next, acquire drugs and/or alcohol
>when I draw, I pop cannabis capsules during my session, staggered every hour
>I usually take 60mg THC, 30mg CBD, and 30mg CBN by the end of the day
>I take the first dose right when I start the drawing session so it links up with my drawing habit
>this is called habit stacking which enhances both habits
>doing drugs or getting drunk is fun, and since I'm drawing at the same time, my brain has been rewired to think drawing is the funnest shit in my life
>the dopamine reinforces the habit
And that's it. You will nerf your drafting skills but everything will catch up through lots of practice. Good luck!

Using grids isn't tracing retard. If you pair a beginner, intermediate and an adv to do a grid study the adv artist will have a better drawing every time. of course this is just taste, so disregard me if you like it as it is

You might have a point, especially with the focal point stuff. I'll give it some thought. Thanks.

looks decent, make sure to acknowledge and mark areas that bother you the most. perfect is hard and not really needed in terms of where you have to be to get value out of your studies. You said you did a couple of them, why do YOU think your recent grid is better than previous attempts? like actually try to explain it to yourself and put it into words/thought.

Using a grid is just tracing with extra steps. Better artists can trace better, no shit.
