THREAD CHALLENGE

Once you make the big dumb loomis construction, how do you add hair? What's the order of operations? Remove the bald skull part, then add hair? Somehow do it while the big annoying skull line is still there fucking everything up? I'm stuck. He kind of cheated by making all his little loomlings bald or having one or two scraggly little hairs poking up off an otherwise perfectly smooth scalp.
>>
>>8015681
You sketch the head shape in lightly so it erases easily
>>

821 KB PNG
>>
>>8015682
Yes, but when do you erase the head? How do you know how far out from the skull to put the outer line of the hair? Is there a rule, like with facial proportions? For something so exacting and mathematical, drawing really does have some major gaps in rules.
>>
>>8015681
Digital retard here, i just draw the hair in a different color, starting with basic shape and then making it more complex as i go on.
>>
>>8015689
They're more like guidelines.

do whatever is more convenient
you can place another layer/paper and use the bald head as guideline, or erase lightly, anything goes
>>
>okay boxes
>okay circles
>cannot into sexo roundness
what the fuck
>>
>>8015689
It depends on the hair style/angle of the head. I'm sure you could theoretically come up with a perfect system just like you could draw every body part inside a box each with it's own set of vanishing points, but it turns out it's easier to let your brain rewire itself to get a feel for how to place these things.

Just print a bunch of generic base heads and practice drawing hair on them. It's easier on yourself when you're not worrying about construction the right skull every time as well
>>
taking frenchy struggling with construction as evidence that he's using ai is retarded. he just hasn't had to learn construction because his poses don't actually require it, so he hasn't figured out why the construction isn't working for him so he just keeps doing the wrong thing. which is fine, he's just not doing complex poses from imagination and complex perspectives that require perspective knowledge/construction usage, so he's not figuring out where he's going wrong. if you think that's tracing ai when he's done thread challenges numerous times you're retarded

It's just fucked up, I wish they'd make up their minds, because there obviously are rules you have to follow or the art winds up looking like shit, but for a lot of said rules, the documentation is incomplete as fuck. Like, what if I want to show them at a southeastern angle but the guide only shows how to do up, down, left, and right? What the hell do I do when all the skull proportion practices I've been cranking out don't map onto anime heads at all? What part of the body do you start with first? Should you construct the torso with boxes still if the subject is a shapely woman who's basically composed of circles? And for that matter, ARE squares the right thing to construct the torso with? Because I sometimes see people doing ovals, accounting for ribcage, mapping out fat rolls, etc. and sometimes doing none of those things. It's fucked up, there's gotta be some rules or order somewhere or everyone's art would look like shit, but nobody seems to be willing to agree on what they are.
>>

/beg/ how do I make money off of art? I'm also new to actually selling art, and is it normally acceptable to sell pieces heavily inspired by others?
Also low-key if Centuri-Chan lurks here, love your work bro, dude, dudette, can't figure that one out yet.
>>
>Just do studies
>Do them totally fine
>Start thinking about what I'm doing/reading guides
>Get ridiculously overwhelmed and stop being able to do everything, including stuff I could previously do

Anyone else get this? I don't know why, but I get way better results when I just follow along intuitively/with minimal instruction, especially if it's something with a clear goal like "deconstruct this person" or "draw a head at this angle" or whatever. It's when it starts going weird ("draw a head in this way at an angle we haven't shown you") where shit hits the fan, even if I could probably do it on my own.
>>
>>8015745
>Is it normal to sell pieces heavily inspired by others?
Oh, yeah, totally. I mean, that's a majority of comms, they'll pay for a character someone else made, in a specified style (though that's rarer), etc. Art is taking shit you love from others and making it your own!

That being said, unless you work at cons (and even then for prints' sake), you really wanna switch to digital. It's just really hard to sell physical art or get traction with it on social media if that's your goal.

Cool work, but this reminds me of something Steve Huston and Krenz often talk about, paraphrasing, you need to always push the gesture, because at each step you’re going to lose dynamism. I kind of see it in this case the skin rendering looks stiff, like stretched fabric.

Cool work, anon. As it is, the composition looks fine, and the anatomy doesn’t look bad, but the lack of applied perspective and line weight makes it really hard to read.

https://www.animationmeat.com/pdf/misc/waltstanchfield/43ws_perspective_rules.pdf

I think you would benefit from studying Kinnikuman Perfect Origin. The artwork is really good, with lots of bulky bodies in dynamic poses that are incredibly readable, which is rare.

For bulky bodies, I would focus on the outline to make the forms read as bulky, while keeping the inner rendering subtle and thinner, with plenty of gaps between the lines.

be wary i'm not too invested in anatomy, I'm more of a read good enough guy

what was it?
i feel like when i want to draw an animal or a new kind of landscape i am better off watching photos and videos of it (videos are very important) and coming back days later to draw it from imagination/loosely referenced instead

but its like, when i try to draw accurately now, i just fucking cant, sometimes i ignore measuring and end up making 2 or 3 warped sketches before i give in and go back to the basics, it happened today also, when i got down a good 1st stage sketch i was like "damn now i dont even know how to continue anymore"

like, its not that i cant draw, but sometimes it really makes me feel like a prebeg. Why am i needing to make adaptations to my process, for subjects that i have drawn hundreds of times? bitch please i have taken enough shit.
>>
and then this will devolve into me not even knowing if i should keep drawing or just move to color directly, not a problem for trad, there i can just give up, act like i will draw digitally instead and then go to sleep without drawing at all

working on assets for a skaven ship, but picking the right colors is still very very hard for me. i basically just isolate each color and then play around with HSV sliders until it looks okay-ish. browns are really tricky though because it's basically any shade from red to green with the saturation toned down. i need assets like the toilet, doors, and shower to contrast from the flooring but the best i could come up with was an olive green. i feel retarded, but i need to learn to do more than just floor planning.

Drawing photorealistic portraits basically only helps you draw photorealistic portraits and nothing else. If you’re a /beg/ it can be a good exercise in observation and lighting and etc, but if your goal is to do manga or animation then it’s better to spend your time just practicing those things directly

They ate feeding them time and bad job propects.

Even if I became a top 1% artist it wouldn't finance my life and bring a top 0.1% artist would still not beat my day job income. Drawing is strictly a hobby for me. An hour a day after work.

South Americans have easy jobs, low hours and bad pay. The perfect mix of circumstances to give motivation - entirely fuelled by the desire to improve ones life.

For first worlders art practice could only worsen life.

Gesture is many things. In his more popular lecture, the one on /asg/, he calls it straightening the pose. I love Krenz, but I don't recommend him because there is a language barrier. It's better to find a source in a language you're comfortable with.

If you want to learn more about gesture, I think Gesture Drawing for Animatiors (or drawn to life) is the most comprehensive book on the subject. It’s structured as a collection of notes, so you don't have to read it linearly to get something out of it. its more of a thinky thinky book than a step by step how to draw book.

Pyw? There's some recent discussion online about 4 hours being the absolute maximum for learning new stuff in the beginning. Going beyond that will most likely hamper any progress. I'd say 2 hours a day is a minimum, 4 should be max.
Also, copying everything you see; artists, books especially, references, etc. It's the only way to get better, and you'll advance much quicker.

This is what I was just working on, it’s mostly from imagination but I did look at a reference to check how I should handle the far eye. The far eye always fucks me up no matter whether I’m drawing anime or anything else.
Now I know this isn’t TERRIBLE so it might look like I’m fishing for attention but I swear I’m not, I was genuinely expressing my intense frustrations. This one didn’t turn out too bad though. The teeth look kinda funny because I’m fusing everything from the maxilla to the jawline into one shape but I don’t really care at this point, it’s supposed to be a simplification not a realistic skull and I just want to move on. True biggest problem here was I left the far eye “symbol drawn” instead of really understanding its form, nothing I tried could make it look more 3D without making it look worse so I just left it. I’ll need to figure that out. Overall this skull turned out ok though and I think there’s a genuine sense of 3D form here. If I could do every angle from imagination with this level of quality I’d be pretty happy.
What really gets me though is this took me HOURS of fiddling back and forth with the details, trying to get every angle correct. I don’t know how pro artists can just sit down and effortlessly draw a correct drawing that obeys proportions and perspective. It feels like an unreachable goal, and my long iteration times are why my progress is so ungodly slow.
>>8016311
Skulls. I have done literally nothing but skulls for weeks, looking at how different people simplify the skull, experimenting with different ways of simplifying the skull, etc.
>>
>>8016378
>I don’t know how pro artists can just sit down and effortlessly draw a correct drawing that obeys proportions and perspective.
because they have spent as much time drawing as I have playing videogames
>>
>>8016380
I don’t know how much time I’ve accumulated over the past 8 years. Some weeks had 20 hours and some weeks only had 2, it varied a lot. I’ve spent a shitload of time no matter how you slice it though. And I’m still dealing with all these problems I’ve had since the very beginning. The last few weeks have been a legitimate change though, all new methods and goals and definitely spending WAY more time than I’ve ever spent before, so, maybe there’s still some hope.

You need to be less perfectionist. Also, it seems like hide 2? Hide 2 skips a few lessons on perspective that hide 1 has. While hide is ok for /begs/, you will need supplementary resources since hide courses are very shallow, and he does many drawings by feeling, which is not good as a learning resource.

For your information, both I and many anons around here also spent more time than we wished when we started to draw. The first drawings, often copies, take ages and yield poor results. Even my first grid copies back the day are awful.

>>8016363
Sure, but you can't complain about not improving when you skip the things that I find difficult/do not enjoy and are fundamentals. I hate anatomy, boring as fuck, complex bones and muscles, difficult to learn and draw. But here I am grinding this bullshit and powering through. The reward is worth it, though. For example, now I have a good understanding of the scapula/clavicle relation because of the acromion process connecting both, and they provide landmarks to where main muscles originate.

>>8016391
Hatching is a form of shading, using lines to create values.

>>
Maybe I just like looking at drawings and not drawing myself.
>>
>>8016398
My goal is to draw a simplified skull from any angle from imagination. I can’t move on until I can do that. If doing boxes or perspective exercises or whatever would help me achieve that goal faster then I can do that, but I can’t just say “eh fuck it I’ll just come back to skulls later”. That mentality is why I’ve been permabeg for 8 years. I need to actually SOLVE this problem, permanently, by any means necessary. There will be no progress until I do.
>>8016400
>Hide 2 skips lessons on perspective
I think my perspective is actually good enough here. Like I said it’s mainly the detailing on the form of the distant eye that was my biggest stumbling block here, I need to just look specifically at the skull form here rather than generic perspective exercises. And I can live with this form for the teeth, despite it being a bit funky. But if there are noticeable perspective errors here then please redline it.

>Did you learn all about perspective? Anatomy? Light/Shadows/Values?
Literally none of these matter in art. All of these are copes invented for talentless hacks by talentless hacks to feel better about themselves. Oh I am totally not wasting time, I learned the correct shade of the terminator today! I learned the left toe muscles! I learned how ambient light should affect the shadow!
This is all not real art, this is bullshit, self serving gobbledygook. It's a substitute for the only thing that matters in art - the ability to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. To be able to catch their eye. To make them stop scroll through dozens of same looking pictures. That's something you can never learn. It comes from the soul.
A talented artist can make broken anatomy, broken perspective, wobbly lines, no color, no rendering, no shadow or broken impossible shadow drawing work. Catch the viewer by their soul's balls with invisible hand and force them to mentally engage with the drawing, force them to feel something. Doesn't matter if it's some high art or some smut.
Meanwhile talentless hacks will waste hours on setting up perfect perspective, mathematically calculate perfect shadows and values and composition and still produce something dull, uninspiring. Their art will be background noise, perceived by no one, remembered by no one and will influence no one.
A talented artist will become a good memorable artist first and THEN will take their art even further beyond and learn the intricacies of fine arts. A talentless hack, on the other hand, finds himself before an insurmountable wall that he's ill equipped for andhopes to climb it by learning "fundamentals". Not realizing - if he is forced to learn them to make the first step, he had already lost.

Here's something I drew not long ago.
I'll have to explain the scene since you need to be able to read cyrillic - she wrote an obscene word on the fence and is trying to hide the spray can from the viewer.
I refuse to engage with fundies further than this level, until I can produce work after work that will make people reply to it and call it soulful. This one was a success, the others after that sucked. No fundamentals can save an unmemorable boring drawing. A talented artists makes shitty scribbles look sovlful.

>speaking from experience you will forget 95% of this after you finish this
I forget it the moment I do it. The point here is not to memorize it all, I am not a medical student. It is just to familiarize myself. Then I distill it into more simple, stylized, and reusable information (visually; I rarely remember names, even more when I group them), which is easier to persist in memory and practice later.
>>
>>8016401
cheers, shall be attempting this

Why are /beg/ and /int/ lumped under a single thread? 99% of the thread mogs my /permabeg/slop
>>
>>8016623
Whenever there’s a separate /int/ thread it’s just nothing but arguing over what counts as /int/ or not. If it’s all one thread then it doesn’t matter
>>
>>8016623
Yeah, it should be intermediate and advanced. Most shit in here is not beg, not even by a long shot, and actual begs are too self-conscious to post their crap when they see this.

Any video or book on the basics of how to hold the arm and draw on an easel like in the classical academies? I watch videos, but they are actually a teacher talking about how to draw something (for example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y15mAjG6yW8 ) and I can watch how he uses his arm, but my idea is a video dedicated to watching how you're supposed to use your arm and shoulder for drawing

Its been 1 month since I've drawn. I've noticed no regression in my stylus handling (somehow) but I guess all of the regression went to my decision making. I have do idea how to start and finish shit anymore (not like I was finishing anything in the first place). I've forgotten how I did hair, forgotten how I've done faces, forgotten how I do bodies. I haven't even attempted anything harder than a front facing pose yet, I'm afraid of how it'll turn out.
I have high hopes though, I haven't regressed as far as I expected. I tried to practice spatial visualization during my break (imagining things really hard), but I dont think it had any effect. It feels good to be back. That default charcoal brush is great, I should use it more often.

Also some of my stuff was getting added in boorus by bots and spread by other bots, but while I believe uploading there should only be done by unemployed autists and that it stopped some of my pieces from ending in places they're too shit to be in it's just a bonus.

If you’re going to have designs that are symmetrical, I would spend more time making those symmetries look as even as possible. From the thumbnail, the pointy wing things look wonky, and at scale, they look off. You seem a little lost on how to progress.

>>8017352
Great, keep going! There are many exercises you can do to improve. My favorite is to scribble and then try to find something to draw from the scribbles.

>>8017444
>>8017471
I think you’re doing fine. You just need to learn how to abstract what you see. If you want to draw suits, find references (drawings, not real photos), see how other artists do it, and copy them.
>>
>>8017464
I can usually manage that to a certain extent. I just don't know how to paint different materials yet (like metal and plastic in this case). I should probably try to grab some simple objects and paint those.

Great figures by the way. You capture the feeling of the gestures quite well.

So... sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you guys ever feel embarrassed about what you like to draw because you feel it doesn't fit people's mental image of you?
I'm an adult man, I like lifting weights, and I tend to come off as pretty stoic/serious most the time... yet I enjoy drawing girls in a very "girly/lolita" type of way. Lots of pink, stuffed animals, frilly stuff etc.
I'm not gay or anything, but yeah.. my family asks me what I draw and I'll show them anatomy/landscape sketches and what not, but my true interests I keep to myself because I think they'll just be weirded out.
Do any of you guys relate to this?

I compartmentalize to an absurd degree because of anxiety, so the fact that I draw is a closely-guarded secret that's life or death. My family has no idea, it's only linked to my online persona, my IRL identity isn't an artist at all.

I'm kinda embarrassed to show anyone what I draw, partly because it feels at odds with how I think people see me, yeah, but also because it's sexual in nature most of the time. It seems like it'd be natural to be a little cagey about it. You're expressing your inner thoughts and covert interests, that's not exactly something that you share openly with people just because it's art.

I really want to draw cool girls with big tits, big muscles, in mechs, barely sfw, etc. Basically just cool stuff for myself. Thing is, you've described me to a tee, except for the Lolita-thing, but I'm not going to shame you for that. Adult, fitness, sociable, etc. I keep having to draw more normal stuff, like anatomy and portraits to show regular people, but it's not what I like to draw. I really wish I had a group of friends to draw and share stuff like that, but alas. My regular friends are rather normal in comparison to my interests. I'd wager if I was really good at drawing, it would be more justified that I were drawing sexy girls, so that's my goal for now.

Still, I actually do like your drawing, but my comment was too long. Drawing is legit one of the easiest and cheapest hobbies to get into, but also one of the hardest to master, and one you'll never master completely. I try to stick to small studies no more than 10 to 20 minutes depending on the difficulty or scale. Past that, and you're not learning much, and you'll be more occupied by polishing a turd. Unless you're trying to improve linework, them go ahead, I think. Your biggest struggle seems to be construction in general, and it might be an idea to try and study Hampton or Bridgman, even though it's boring. I do envy your style, a thing I'm trying to improve.

Ah modern technology...you never cease to impress. In the past, we imagined the future of technology in all sectors to be easier, more convenient, less manual work, yet, expecting things to just...work. You could just plug in your new pen tablet "Initialising drivers sir!"then presto, you can use your tablet with it's inbuilt pressure sensitivity with no hassle, maybe just a required restart....but no. Instead, we padded, sanitised, idiot proofed technology and computing so much it no longer works and requires more manual, obtuse macgyvering from the user- but rejoice! for we've finally accomplished accessibility - so now the dumbest people in the world can be louder and more distracting. It only took your entire adult life and trillions of dollars in "R&D"...isn’t this great?

Pick one, not both. Unless it's a wacom or Samsung tablet, an android tablet is not going to "just work". If you want a tablet to just work, get a cheap, used ipad pro and an apple pencil. A 2017 model costs about 150 bucks, plus a 50 dollars for the pencil.

along with the problems with structure, try removing some lines
one way is to only use lines to indicate overlaps, occlusion and outlines, not plane changes (of course not applicable when you start trying to use value / hatching, but it might be useful as a starting point)
try and see how much this idea simplifies the hands and face

Me? I like anime lolis. I draw anime lolis in small panties and play anime lolis in vidya. Nothing to hide from family, friends, or strangers. The ones who feel uncomfortable with my based hobbies are tasteless and can dilate.

>there's nothing for you here except to get attention from anons less skilled than you
you assume that's not the reason he posts here

truth nuke. and also quite sad.

why would it be sad to wish for your art to be seen? why do you think anyone posts their art here?

while the first is accidentally cool, the second is not a skill it's just random bits on a flat shape, It's surprising that this is what finally triggered you
>>
>>8017934
why would you want skilled artists to leave, especially if they do paintovers occasionally
it's good to have a wide spectrum of skill imo

not that guy you replied to but:
>why would it be sad to wish for your art to be seen?
thats what social media / discord channels are for, you'll reach a much broader audience and actual non artists who just appreciate your artwork without looking much at the technical behind it
>why do you think anyone posts their art here?
to get critique and share in the struggle like artists on the same level as you (think of it as a digital classroom)
you could argue this guy can critique well since he's good, but he doesn't contribute to that
the only reason I can think of why he still posting here is because he is too afraid to post on social media and/or likes to humblebrag about his skill compared to other artists trying to get better
like you can do something like this >>8015992, why are you still here?
