So, I'm graduating in June and I have my first job lined up. I want to see if all the bullshit I have just discovered is a common global occurrence or even just common in the USA.

So the salary is $62400/yr, which is already not great when compared to my friends salary, but I think it'll be fine. Then taxes after my retirement investment contributions are going to be 17.5%, almost FUCKING TWENTY PERCENT. So, that's 1/5 gone right then. Then rent is $1300/mo. That money to the retirement investment account is gone too. Health insurance + expenses per year will be around $3000/yr. Transportation for my subway/bus transit pass + all my car expenses + gas will be about $5000/yr. Then groceries due to inflation will probably be about $3000/yr. Do you really have so little of your pay left to do whatever you want with? What percent of your salary do you have left to spend on whatever you want in your country? Are my taxes and expenses high compared to other countries? I feel like taxes are probably equal to others, but the expenses are definitely going to be higher.

Alright, next, I want to talk about PTO. So, I learned that you aren't just given your time off days right away, but you accumulate them per hour worked which is bullshit. Is that the norm in your country or no? I will be getting 8 hours PTO per bi-weekly paycheck, and I will also get 11 PTO holidays. Is that considered a good amount? I feel like I am getting fucked, that's only like 37 workdays days (plus weekends) off per year. How am I supposed to travel and just take time to relax if that is all I am given?

No one told me how much of your money goes away to taxes and expenses, and how little free time you are left with when you start working. I think I should just continue onto graduate school to avoid working honestly.

you get more money and PTO after a while. basically consider yourself a freshman wagie and it will get better as you level up.
>>
>retirement investment account
what the fuck is that

about the PTO, that's the same amount I'm getting (two days per month) but I'm doing the absolute bottom of the barrel, minimum wage job there is.
I think you're spending a lot on insurance and transportation but maybe that's normal. I don't even know how much I'm paying but it can't be that much. Why even use public transport if you have a car, or why have a car if you travel by subway?
>>
>>196463533
how did you get your job anon?
>>
>>196463804
Retirement investment account is a savings/investment account that you can put money into prior to paying taxes, and that money will not be taxed, nor the capital gains you make on it, so long as you wait until you retire to withdrawal from it, otherwise you pay both the income tax you would've plus like a 10% penalty as well. It's a really good system because it puts WAY less of a burden on private and government pensions to ensure that people are able to retire, since nearly everyone will large quite a large sum of money to retire on that gets supplemented with their pensions as well. I was surprised to learn most of the rest of the world doesn't have them.

I feel like the amount I spend on insurance and transportation is unfortunately normal in the USA. I have a car for when I go somewhere outside of the city, but when I am in the city it is easier to get around via walking + the subway system.

Gem. Keep up.

Bro i earn €400 a month shut the fuck up
>>
>>196463802
Why is that? Shouldn't young people who are just starting to work be given more free time so they can spend their money travelling and experiencing life before they settle down?
>>
>>196464073
>>196464053
You have to remember that the cost of living is MUCH higher in the USA. I bet if you look at PPP, you'd realize that our quality of lives are pretty much the same, except you have better and safer cities.
>>
>>196463533
That's still 2k a month left over, don't know what you're complaining about. That's almost an average salary here.
>>
>>196464240
By my calculation, since I put 20% of my money away to save/investment in my IRA. It is only $1250/mo leftover. Which really isn't a lot. Especially if you are trying to travel well internationally like I am. Business class flights alone are like $1k to Europe from the USA.

It's not much higher, maybe rent is a bit higher than most euro countries but everything else is similarly priced or lower.
You guys are just used to consuming too much shit you don't need every single month.
>>
>>196464361
Dude, there's more to life than money. I'd be perfectly happy earning less if I could like in a beautiful, walkable, safe city and didn't have to worry about paying for my own healthcare or college education for my children.
>>
>>196464413
When I was in Italy and Germany a few Summers ago, everything was in fact cheaper. The food, transportation, general entertainment. Then add in cheap rent and no healthcare costs, and I feel like things probably average out between our two continents as far as disposable income goes.
>>
>>196464426
Then move? You are not an illiterate afghan migrant, I bet you could easily find a job in Europe (paid half what you earn now but hey, money are not important right?)
>>
>>196464426
>if I could like in a beautiful, walkable, safe city
Kys /n/igger
>>
>>196464511
I don't think you understand how hard it is to move to the EU. It seems that European leaders only want immigrants from Africa who move illegally, and not skilled workers for some reason.
>>
>>196464582
Why? Beautiful, walkable, safe cities are the norm in most of the world, and lovely to live in.
>>
>>196464135
>You have to remember that the cost of living is MUCH higher in the USA
No it's not. Food and rent may be a bit cheaper here, but clothes, gas, cars - all cheaper in the USA, while most electronics are about the same price.
You have never suffered. Go ahead. Try moving somewhere else and living there for a year or two. You'll see just how easy you have it.
>>
>>196464588
Just find a job with a company here and you can come
>>
>>196464623
>>196464650
I can't just move to the EU even though I would love to. Finding a job who would rather hire a foreigner than a local is hard enough, but then I would also need to learn the local language prior to even attempting to get a job. This is all assuming that there would even be open positions for my degree and skillset.
>>
>>196463533
7 months out of uni I 35k, £2300 after a tax a month and spend £1400 on rent, bills, and food.

If you earn 60k right off uni you can't have a meme degree so you should be able to find something

You're American.
>would also need to learn the local language
You're American.

Finding a job would be piss easy. You can try, why not submit some CVs right now?
>>
>>196464708
Converting that to dollar is $1100/mo, a bit less than me, but then everything is cheaper over there too so it goes farther. We literally have the exact same amount of disposable income effectively.

I guess so, but I can't access the money in my retirement account until I retire unless I want to pay a 10% penalty on the money. You guys don't really need to invest for your own retirement since your government pensions are quite robust correct? Here in the USA, depending on your retirement age, social security maxes out at $4873/mo.

I'm not, I'm only putting 5% into my pension, I'll start investing probably late this year or next once I've bought furniture for the flat I'm moving into and got other things sorted.

I pay $650/month for 2 bedrooms, rooftop balcony with heated parking.
>Health insurance + expenses per year will be around $3000/yr
"Free" here (around $20 per visit) with a cap on medicine.
>subway/bus transit pass + all my car expenses + gas will be about $5000/yr
I pay around $4500 per year on transportation, mainly my car.
>I learned that you aren't just given your time off days right away, but you accumulate them per hour worked which is bullshit

All employees have right to mandatory 25 full workdays of paid vacation every year. But most get far more. When you add other days off on holidays and such most people usually end up with 40+ paid days of vacation.

https://theculturetrip.com/europe/sweden/articles/why-sweden-takes-so-much-vacation-time

>and how little free time you are left with when you start working
I work 7 hours per day, no overtime can be forced on me and plenty of vacation time every year. It's fine.
>>
>>196463533
started in apprenticeship but made about the same as you after 2 years
>paid 200/month in rent at that time
>jumped to 1300/month when i bought my own place some years after that again
30% tax
never pay out of my paycheck for retirement or health insurrance
have 2 cars and cost about 300/month in fuel and insurrance
free use of company car as well
my trade offers unlimited (and illegal) overtime if you want, pays really well plus all travel expences paid
5 weeks paid holiday and usually really flexible hours, you do 80+ hours a few weeks you can pretty much demand a week off and you dont loose your 1,5x or 2x overtime.
never really saved anything for the purpose of saving yet i now, years later, just bought myself a house and currently looking at a 3rd car.
absolutely never wasted money on consooming anything other than alcohol. even my clothes are worn out and filthy becsuse i dont care.
time and money to do anything i want so i dont complain.
also; two more weeks/month and im debt free.

Outside of the major cities (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and maybe some others) it's pretty average rent for a 2 roomer (if it's not a huge place).
Autism collage incoming but I pay the equivalent of $578 per month for pic related here in Kalmar.
Downside being that I have to commute 30 minutes one way.
>>
>>196467295
You do not suffer in Sweden. $650 doesn't even get you a bedroom in a shared house in Ohio.
