Okay, I finally think an American accent is more superior than any other accent because this syndrome makes some people talk to others using different accents, like American people adopting a British accent or something. However, I've never seen British or French people develop an American accent, which I think is because it's very hard to pronounce the 'R' sound. What I would say is that the American accent is the hardest accent in the world. So, yes, it is inherently superior compared to other accents around the world

Been studying Spanish for 4-5 months intensively. Hours of reading and listening per day. Can construct basic sentences finally. Can understand 90%+ of intermediate-level things. Decided to go to a language exchange meetup to celebrate my success. Maybe have a simple conversation. I went and I understood like 3% of everything being said. The loud music didn't help, but I thought I'd do better. Morale at an all-time low. I thought I'd be at a comfortable level within the next year, but now I think it'll be more like 4 years. And this is apparently one of the easiest language for native English-speakers to learn. I want to give up, but I love this stupid country and want to fully experience it, so I'll probably keep slaving away. A few more years of torture should do the trick.

Man, all that grammar I learned in highschool and middle school and elementary school for spanish was fucking useless.I don't think early grammar really has any use at all, when you don't understand 95% of a text you don't understand it even if you understand that the little ending you just saw means that it's male or that it's in the past that it happened, still doesn't make sense. Guy who started learning Russian back in December here. Haven't checked in here for a few months. I'm still at it. I have yet to miss a day of Duolingo since the year began. I do about 30-60 minutes a day. Definitely slacking on Anki though, I can't remember the last time I drilled that. I'm just not really satisfied with any of the decks I have. I suppose we must learn and memorize words by speaking practice, not just by consuming massive YouTube input or Anki going. The shortest way to get a massive vocabulary is to shout out and repeat with voice training. Yeah, the best way to quickly learn a foreign language is to get a native speaker who constantly corrects you and sticks with you all the time. If that's not possible, try going to a park or a mountain and putting on a one-person show, inventing a new character while loudly speaking your lines. I tried this approach today while hiking, and honestly, two hours is about the max you can do. For those two hours, I was non-stop moving and exaggerating my mouth movements as I talked to myself. Once my voice starts to wear out, I switch to listening or reading on the way back home to wind down. Every sound should be recorded with deliberate practice. Then, I split my identity into different personas like Kane, Gabriel, and Dmitri for each language, and trained consciously. For me. The best way to deliberately off the switch on my native language.. would be 'Acting'. The acting brings a certain awkwardness, especially when your native language interferes. This needs to be consciously corrected.

How is it that some phrases become "known" when you are learning a language. I am learning Spanish and there are a lot of things I can understand without need support from my English language. However, I don't really know how I have come to learn such phrases well enough that I don't even feel the urge for the English side to take over and translate it. I suppress the feeling to translate but sometimes it sneaks past and I don't even realize I am doing it. Doesn't help either that Spanish and English have major similarities and some words even look like the same word in the other language( example, identification and identificacion).I do a lot of input but some sentences and phrases just leave me confused and others I know immediately even if they are more rare phrases.

I'm learning German to read books. I'm at a point where I can read B1 graded readers quite comfortably and I want to start with actual novels already. The issue is that I can't find a decent platform/setup to read properly. I've tried so many applications on desktop and web, including Calibre, and they didn't satisfy me. I think it's all because of my experience with the Japanese learning community. They made so many tools that it made learning the language less painful. I used to read Japanese light novels on ebook readers dedicated to Japanese, mining and looking up words with Yomichan as I go through entire books. It was comfy as fuck and it made the reading experience enjoyable despite the hellish difficulty of written Japanese.Now it's less enjoyable to learn to read in other languages because I've been spoiled.
