I think the french are very immeasurably better based for refusing to speak English to american tourists even though they are proficient in English, instead making americans learn french so could communicate with them.

When I visited they spoke to me in English without annoyance. As long as you are polite, and well meaning they are not upset about you not speaking French. They'd prefer you do, but people lie about them being mad at English speakers.
