Could someone tell me how the Barbute styles appear around 1400-1500 when you see them, or similar styles, in Greek and Roman art which would have been much earlier.

I think those ancient Greek helmets are mostly bronze, so I assume it might be something to do with bronze being easier to work with in some ways - there's also ancient Greek examples of plate armor, and that similarly would take until the Late Medieval period to reappear as a concept (Roman lorica segmentata doesn't quite count, since it uses smaller plates that overlap rather than a single piece that covers the whole torso - the bigger the plate, the harder it is to make with pre-industrial smithing technology, that's also why lamellar was so popular)

the barbutes in particular were specifically inspired by Ancient Greek designs, which happened a bunch during the Renaissance

1066 really was the turning point from the early middle ages to the high middle ages.
There was one generation of men who could have raided Christian England in the name of Odhin when they were young then marched to the Holy Land in the name of God along side Anglo Saxons when they were older.

Lets not put some kind of Corithian-Barbute helmet lineage going all the way back to the 200-500s BC on that already questionable enough chart.
Barbutes, like sallets, started as an offshoot of Bascinets in Italy on the late 14th, lets not dig any rabbit holes here, I beg you.

I always wondered if this was one dudes crazy invention or something.
like the crazy guy with his anti-grizzly armor that was letting himself get hit by moving cars and taking running jumps down hills.
I wondered what story was behind it.

I'm suprised how far Chinese armor reconstructions have come. The earliest examples(such as your image) were quite frankly plastic garbage with little to no historical basis.

Barbutes were essentially a /fa/ helmet trying to emulate old Roman/Greek styles during the Renaissance while making minor upgrades to them.
Unironically one of the biggest appeals of the barbute over its contemporary competitors was that it allowed you to larp as a Greek.

Helmets are naturally going to follow cultural conventions (rule of cool), it's not an exact precise science that favored nothing but raw efficiency. You had the pseudo-corinthian helmet taking off after the Corinthian was abandoned because people liked the symbolism/imagery of a corinthian helmet pushed back before donning it for battle but clearly didn't like the actual corinthian (terrible hearing and all). You physically cannot/would not wear the pseudo-corinthian except tilted back like you'll see on the Perciles statue.

So what >>61426375 said. Renaissance was love of all things antiquity. Same way, just in a much shrunk period of time, you have people wearing Stalhelm inspired (or legitimately just stalhelms) or having uniforms inspired by German attire. Rule of cool, just in more fancy terms.
>>
>>61450367
>pseudo-corinthian
The pseudo-corinthian and corinthian helmet being worn pushed backwards got reintroduced to western european artistical traditions during the early renaissance, although only as general shape and profile not the actual helmet, as part of a group of motifs that is called of al antiqua armor or alla romana that was use to conveing the idea of antiquity or heroism to the subject being depicted.
And later on 16th century they would actually start making armors such as these and the shape of al antiqua helmets can even be found some of the more exquisite burgonets.
IMO, the al antiqua helmet, and by consequence some burgonets, is actually at least in spirit more inspired by the classical greek corinthian helmets than the Barbute, specialy considering that I dont remember ever seeing a barbute being used as part of an al antiqua motif in art, unlike the al antiqua helmet which pops up a lot. If the Barbute was supposed to be an ode to the classical antiquity they surely forgot to tell the artists from the renaissance.
