I bought a 500 retrograde recently. If I could do it again I might look around for the regular 500 with the combo security / field barrel because I want to pick up a 28in barrel for mine right now and they're nearly $300 after taxes and shipping.

You're not really spending much deeper going with the real deal... the lugs should fit any 12ga barrel but you could hack down a Winchester 1912 or a savage 620a for something historically accurate and both of those can be had for under $1k last time i looked.
