>>61488690My problem with the statistics regarding types of guns is that so many people that don't know anything load their shotgun with whatever is the cheapest thing they can get at Walmart, usually 7.5 or 8 shot, and think that they are good to go. Despite that, shotgun stats are still at the top, right next to the rifles. You also have to consider that with rounds like 44 mag, 25, and 32, they probably have very few actual shootings with those cartridges. Statistics only work with large sample sizes, so the autist that insists on using a 32acp, probably practices with it a lot and shoots it well. I very highly doubt that 32 is more effective than 9mm or 38 special and on par with 45acp.

The data we do have suggests that shotguns have no advantage over rifles. My own experience hunting and shooting pest animals backs that up. Shotguns are absolutely lethal, but this idea that they are somehow more lethal than rifles is strange.

I don't care how fast a rifles bullet flys or how big they expand to, short of something like a 50BMG with really fancy bullets, you aren't going to destroy more tissue or induce more blood loss with a rifle than with a properly loaded and ranged shotgun. Defensive use of any gun is almost always within the Shotguns preferred range.
