Let's cut to to the chase here. Are these things really effective, or are they just smekalka placebo?

I don't care, I want them to keep driving garden sheds out into battle because it is so aesthetic. I want them to grow plants on top for 'camoflage'

Looks like it. Makes it nearly impossible for the drones to hit weak spots. They also put EW on it. This one looks like it hit a mine.

mostly placebo. They will do against anything from the very basic DIY drones with simple grenades/mortar rounds. Anything with a shape charge is going to shit on them anyway and the EW only works on certain frequencies on wireless transmission

/k/ as usual is only focused on childish shit. These turtle tanks are very interesting for ONE reason: can tanks be made relevant? Is there a solution, a combination of solutions, etc which make these things useful combat assets? Because if the Russians can make tanks survivable in a modern battlefield than that can be improved and refined and become the new standard for tanks which will in turn lead to the creation of new doctrines for land war. Right now the tank itself is on trial and so far it hasn’t been looking good.
>>
It's to camouflage them from Brimstone's MMW seeker. The Russians were frequently losing whole platoons of tanks in rapid succession to a volley of 3-6 Brimstone missiles launched outside line-of-sight
So now they are dressing the tanks as structures to confuse the missile's targeting algorithms

You get to try new things, then watch Ukrainian videos of it being blown up, and then you go "hmm", and try something different.
I'm sure it would work too, through trial and error, if the vatniggers weren't such retarded, corrupt assholes.
>>
>>61489937
>>61489971
Yeah the curtain really makes me think the primary concern behind all this shit is drones.
Honestly they might even stop the first drone. The second's probably going to have a clear run though. No good in a drone orgy like you'd see on a major advance but maaaaaybe a little utility in some of the single vehicle stalking stuff, where it's more likely to be an opportunistic drone strike than a concerted effort. If you can take the debuff to dignity associated, of course.
>>

They allow the tank to survive far more close strikes by FPV drones. There's enough standoff (>20 cone diameters) between the shell and the vehicle on some of them to reduce the penetration of a PG-7's warhead notably to the point it might not penetrate the vehicle at all. It also stops the drone from actually being aimed at weakspots properly.
Only around 1/5 drones find their target as is, and it takes multiple hits to destroy an MBT, so when you've got these cuck sheds on wheels with EW systems on top of them, you probably reduce the effectiveness of cheap drones drastically.
Doesn't save them from artillery or ATGMs on the other hand, but it forces the Ukrainians into using more expensive and less available systems to reliably defeat.
>>
>>61489591
I can get behind that but that tells you that this unit:
- didn't have a single actual tank available to use here instead.
- does not have a way to repair a tank themselves and repair depots in the rear are already clogged up
Only then does it seem to make sense to utilise a damaged platform in this way.

You know, if you mounted those on some thing that was spinning around the vehicle, it should at least be able to kill off FPV drones. It would also be very light, unlike the steel constructions they weld onto their abominations. It would also be hilarious.
Wouldn't do shit against non-drones though.
>>
>>61489526
Off the top of my head, both the gunner and commander are practically blind, the shed is made out of pot-metal, so it ads zero armour value, the engine and transmission would be a bitch to services, and on top of that, when the vehicles is dissabled the crew will have trouble bailing as the shed would not only contain smoke but also force them all to crawl to the front of the vehicle which is probably not going to be lots of fun, especially if they are on fire.
>>
>>61490060
At a 24*CD standoff, you're looking at roughly 50mm of penetration out of a PG-7 rocket.

Ever since the end of WW2 Russia was treated as a peer military to the West or at least above all other non-western nations. Their propaganda starting in the 2010s also did a great job creating an image of the new Russian army as this modern, cost-effective and utilitarian force when compared to the US with its obsession of expensive scifi tech and gimmicks.
Few people expected them to be part 1991 Iraq and part ISIS reliant on Nork and Iran material support.
>>
>>61489856
Nigga it's called EW and the first world has been using it since the Cold War. Turtle tanks are a step back. They acknowledge an inability to control the battlefield thru multilayered defense (air power, ew, integrated defense systems, etc) and are instead adding a fuckload of barrier (limiting the mobility and ability to fire) so that these can be used. Its more of a step backward to when the same was done for tanks in the past. Meanwhile the first world would deploy EW jammers to disable the cheap drones, total control of the air, high mobility arty to shoot and scoot and smart munitions for hard targets. And thats before we even discuss proper drones with real payloads doing loitering ops
>>
>>61490172
I saw a few formulations along the lines of 'people expected the Russia that they defended Burger Town from' which I quite like.
>>
>>61490061
We'll probably see dedicated heavily up-armored EW vehicles who's only purpose is to firstly disrupt drones and act as a damage sponge for the drones it doesn't disrupt while on the attack. So pretty much a new class of dedicated armored vehicle.

Ideally you would have it controlled remotely via a dedicated cable from a command tank or something, so you don't have to endanger the driver but doubt Russians don't care about that.

>>61490061
>but it forces the Ukrainians into using more expensive and less available systems to reliably defeat
A point that's now moot with the US rejoining the effort. The sheds might've worked while Ukraine was suffering from shell famine but now that's not an issue any more.
>>
>>61490217
It's always an issue if you need dedicated anti-tank systems or artillery to resolve it. There's only so many you can spread around. These drones are like 400 dollars a pop and can be thrown around like candy.

It's getting tiresome to point out, but with the way Russia is organizing and never shaping these raids:
most things that Russia sends out do not even get to their destination in the first place.
They do not maneuver,
they do not delegate sectors of fire to different vehicles in a column,
they just drive forward, usually on a road.
And that is all they need to do.
None of these vehicles are expected to return. If they return, they will be reloaded with warm bodies and sent back out until they don't return.
>>

Well, I know explosions (in terms of HE) don't do that much damage to armored vehicles, particularly tanks, so if you could disable an FPV drone before it gets too close, the effect of its shaped charge (or HE) would be diminished.
Sure, the russian meat armor would still be compromised, but I doubt they'd have that much meat armor on an armored vehicle or tank with a spinning umbrella full of new age healing crystals.

There's not enough ATGMs to arm every platoon out there with enough missiles and launchers to stop an armored offensive. Terrain isn't optimal for them always either. They're heavy, clumsy systems that cost a shit-ton and can't just be spread around everywhere.
Drones on the other hand, they're so cheap and plentiful even Ukraine can have them anywhere they need.
>Anything that's going to kill the tank is going to go through that tinfoil paper without an issue.
Too much standoff for smaller warheads and impossible to aim them accurately at weakpoints because it's sheet metal 3 meters from the turret rear.

No, it's the war that makes it fun. And you have far more resources and "men" to throw at the wall than the enemy. Sure, your stuff is worse in every aspect, but you have an overwhelming numerical advantage in terms of meat, relic vehicles and rusted metal compared to your enemy. And for every few meters you gain (or feet for the fatniggers across the pond), you gain extra resources, scrap and meat to throw at Ukraine. You can also gamble and criticize the leadership for more ammunition, but this might lead to an instant game over if you push it too hard. the most you could say about this relating to tanks on the modern battlefield is that they need anti drone systems. wow, big revelation. meanwhile the only reason these things exist is the grinding attrition of the war starved ukraine of the means of quickly dispatching them (pending resupply) with conventional munitions and that still doesn't seem to help much as the examples of these monstrosities are invariably mobility killed husks.

Why the fuck are you tripfagging anon? The Russian army is a state of bullshit and OPs post is all the evidence you need. It speaks more of the Russians absolute fucking terror of drones than it does of any invention to cope with them
>>
>>61490176
But that's the Russia we got. Supposed elite formations dying en masse while bumrushing stupidly small targets, dronestrikes going down on them like their Natashas on the Churkas back home, BMPs driving around without a plan until they spectacularily explode, the list goes on. Only real difference is that the MW2 VDV had cooler uniforms.
>>
>>61490502
Improves morale too, since the crew knows they can't just abandon the tank unless they want to get whipped.

What's stopping a drone dropping a mine in front of it and behind it? Just curious.

Honestly my guess is that with US Aid being so long delayed, there's been a shortage of ATGM's and the Ukrainians compensating with increased use of weaker FPV's in the anti-tank role. Hence the Russians completely turtling up their tanks in response.

Hopefully with US Aid back on the table, Ukies will get a flood of new Javelins and we can catch on camera what happens when a tank turret tosses while wrapped up in all that extra crap.

> Not tanks with sheet metal sheds to protect against drones with shaped charges.
Newfag detected. Both the SAA and ISIS had tanks decked out in makeshift protection in an attempt to increase camouflage and survivability against drones and RPGs. ISIS had tanks that legit looked like some hippy white girl and her pothead bf got ahold of and tried to beautify it by hanging and welding a bunch of shit to it.

Also, the tinfoil these tanks are wrapped in is gonna do jackshit against shape charges, it’s mostly just to protect against low yield drone drop munitions, protect dismounts from shrapnel (basically reinventing the wheel at this point since the stupid pidors won’t get in the fucking vehicles), and to shield the EW that they’re trying to carry because the body of the tank is too small to carry one internally.

What are you smoking you faggot? Ukraine literally said at the very beginning of this war that javelins were so good that they could use several hundred a day if needs were fully met (but that doesn’t mesh with the old 2100 units a year production rate, or the new goal of 4000 units a year), so that means they’ve been conserving them since the start. And very recently they have asked for more javelins after the major armored assaults by Russia started ramping up in winter. Advanced US ATGMs don’t grow on trees, so to the contrary of your post there’s been nothing to imply that Ukraine hasn’t been trying to conserve everything that they’ve been getting from the US, including ATGMs.

Where as MBT's are cheap, ubiquitous, light weight, and easily deployed everywhere?

The Ukies have been using combinations of ATGM's and artillery (often assisted by observation drones mind) to butt fuck Vatnik armor rushes pretty much the entire war. The recent increasing reliance on FPV drones is because of ammunition shortages due to US aid being held up and the Euros being slow to ramp up production. Not because ATGM's and artillery stopped being effective anti-armor weapons in this conflict.

>>61499645
>Your mistake is thinking Ukrainians only have US made ATGMs.
Obviously not. But given the size of the US defense industrial base compared to most other countries, Uncle Sam is a major chunk of the available potential resupply pool. And I have a hard time believing the Ukies didn't burn through a lot of ATGM's while doing all that damage to the Vatniks during and after Avdiivka.

Shells and air-defense are the big picture thing the US aid package is addressing, but I think they're also gonna be really glad to get another influx of Javlins.

Makes sense from looking at the picrel. The gun is elevated at like 30 degrees. Unless they're attacking another slag pile there's nothing up there to shoot.

Anon... I... Haven't you heard ANY of the PEREMOHA seeping out of Ukraine the last years. There's heartwarming story on story about QTπ кopoлeвa-пiдлiтoк Olena/Oksana/Yuulia who like commutes 1h erry evening by bus to manufacture drones worth $5K a pop that may destroy russian tanks worth $2M (giving it a ROI of 1:400).

Now, if Russia could shoot down said drones with a lazor where the electricity bill is only $1D a shot, the ROI is 1:500! XD

The age of the drones will end before it even started. The age of lazors and turtle tanks are here. WAAAAAAAGGGHHH!

Realistically, how much will that much spaced armor interfere with shaped charges?
If an RPG drone hit the detonated on the roof and sent a shaped charge into the back of the turret, would it still be able to penetrate?

>iincapable of taking on enemy tanks and incapable of spotting AT teams

russians don't use tanks for taking out AT teams, they use storm Z guys, recon drones and cluster artillery for that. Actually it's easier for RU to counter ATGM teams in trenches than mobile AT drones the ukrainians have.

this thing has been explained as an anti drone shield to lead the line of BMP's with its jammers, recently two motorized brigades broke the line near adviika using such DIY anti drone measures.

>>
>>61489526
It's good if you are worried about drones more than anything else. Spaced armor is spaced armor, even if it's made out of junk and it's enough against drone-sized payloads.
You've got to understand that just not getting blown up by drones before entering the grey zone is already a massive improvement for the average Russian assault unit. Any other drawbacks can come after that.
>>
>>61504887
But this isn't preventing that at all, if the payload is enough to blow up a tank, some corrugated sheets aren't going to do anything. If it's not, then it wasn't going to stop the tank to begin with. This serves no purpose whatsoever other than further impede visibility on those death traps.

Ziggers claim the first one had mine clearing equipment or something
>>
>>61504894
Slat armor exists to counter basic RPG warheads. Guess what a lot of anti-tank drones use? RPG warheads.
A non-modern RPG warhead is going to lose much of its ability to punch through if it blows its load too early.
The visual cover also helps a lot, because the Ukrainian drones are targeting sights and the back of the turret. You don't even need an RPG warhead to kill a tank's eyes, while the latter is especially problematic because a direct hit can turret-toss the entire tank in one shot thanks to the ammo detonation weakness.
>>
>>61504906
No relation to the tard helmet they put on top.
>>61504910
This isn't slat armor, this isn't armor. This shit wouldn't stop a 9mm round. What in the world did your parents do to you?
>>
>>61504947
Made me go quickly re-educate myself on actual slat armor (the spaced armor). So yeah, I was wrong on the penetration reduction, mostly at least.
The idea of slat armor is not to detonate the warhead before it hits the tank surface, but let the warhead pass through and merely deform the sides of the RPG before it hits the main armor, therefore fucking up the shaped charge formation process. If the warhead hits the slat cage on the tip and it detonates there, the explosion may likely shape the molten "spear" (the shaped charge) properly, which can then pierce through both the cage and the armor.

The blyatmobil garage might still be worth it for the other aforementioned reasons though.

What do you even mean by beat NATO, Ramesh?
You mean the 4% of yearly defense spending of one of the NATO countries represented in old tech?
Also, what you are seeing are all rusted non-functioning vehicles that Russia still counts as battle-ready.
>>
>>61489537
>I don't care, I want them to keep driving garden sheds out into battle because it is so aesthetic

I want them to progressively get larger the more they travel. like, they pick up different parts from other wrecked tanks and adds them to itself.

I'm pretty sure there's a video game like this somewhere that had this option.
