Damn I love this movie. And the new one. I really want a colt dragoon now. Or some other gun from this movie.
>>
>>61500568
How could you ever carry the Dragoon knowing you're carrying a circumcised underpowered Walker.
>>
>>61501282
Pretty sure it actually was a Walker in the movie but Rooster called it a Dragoon for some reason
>>
Just bought a 1st Model Dragoon a few days ago. Was reading Blood Meridian and decided to get one. I know they carry Walkers in that, but Captain White has 2 Dragoons and I just think they look cooler.

There are so many quotable lines from those movies. I won't get these quotes perfectly from memory, but they're close enough, and one of the most relevant ones is "If you ride at a man hard enough and fast enough, he won't have time to think about how many people he's got with him. He'll just think about how he can steer clear of the wrath that's about the be set down upon him." As far as I've seen from videos of self-defense shootings, and even some cop shootings, that is a true statement. I also like "You could not hit a man at 300 yards if your rifle was rested on Gibraltar."

>>

When does that happen?
They hang the one without letting him speak, but that's played for laughs. Rooster kicks the kids, but they're abusing a mule and deserve it. He hides Maddie from the one Indian rider, but he turns out to be ok and even tries to help them by signaling that there's a rider coming up after them.

The remake is legit my favorite western.

I also understand how John Wayne is a legend and all but can't stand his movies. They are all goofy old timey westerns where I half expect everyone to start singing. I know it was a different time before Spaghetti Westerns, but it feels like a parody. For a movie called True Grit, Wayne does not have any sort of grittyness about him.

I like the movie, and love John Wayne, though that probably isnt one of my favourite wayne movies. I find it almost hard to believe he won an oscar for it, and somewhat humoursly, his only oscar, despite appearing in hundreds of films.
Imo, John Wayne was a terrible actor, but a good man. By which i mean he always just kinda seemed to play variations of himself, never someone truly different, but thats fine because the Wayne charachter was so good.
Did not enjoy the True Grit remake because they replaced the QT redhead tomboy with some nasty mulatto runt.

It is essentially a short sword. Its it too large to do some knife stuff. I typically carry a smaller knife. It is good as a short machete for clearing brush and chopping things. Pic related is the knife I typically use compared to the bowie.

NTA, but I learned the difference from a John Wayne movie. There's a scene in Chisolm where they're deciding what to do with a cattle thief, and Wayne says he'll be put on trial and be hanged. "He'll be hanged. And it's a ghastly way to go."
>>
>>61505138
Exactly. Hollywood could learn from it. The original was great so why change it? Hell both movies made decades apart are both almost word for word copies of the book. I bought the book thinking I’d get some expanded story and interesting side plots. Nope. Word for word the movie. I believe it even came out in the same year. Wild

>it’s just the original with a few added scenes
the remake is more true to the book
it was also very clever of the Coens to bring in the Christian theme from the book, which the first movie ignores entirely, through the soundtrack and the opening quote card.

>>61502286
>There are so many quotable lines from those movies
"I am struck that LaBoeuf is shot, trampled, and nearly severs his tongue, and not only does not cease to talk, but spills the banks of English."

>Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status (classified as 3-A – family deferment). Wayne repeatedly wrote to John Ford saying he wanted to enlist, on one occasion inquiring whether he could get into Ford's military unit.[39] Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him, since he was their only A-list actor under contract. Herbert J. Yates, president of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract,[40] and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment.[41]

Looks like he wanted to go but would have had to lose everything professionally to do it. The studio execs would have destroyed him with lawsuits. He contributed in the ways he could, including apparently sounding out MacArthur about allowing OSS ops in the Pacific for Wild Bill Donovan while on a USO tour. He went on to be a vocal opponent of communism in the post war. And fuck it, he's about as iconically American as you can get. So shut your commie mouth.

Val Kilmer is alright, but not the rest of the movie. the gunfights are 90s schlock and I could not feel the sense of brotherhood which is supposed to be the real draw of the movie, the character drama round which the events revolve. nor was the romance convincing. perhaps the problem is 90s camerawork, fiddly dialogue, the need to be constrained by IRL accounts. I dunno. but it didn't excite me one bit.

in contrast, Coen Bros' True Grit enthralled me enough on first viewing that I proceeded to read the book, watch the remake, and then the Coen Bros' version again and again

This is an interesting "side by side" comparison of key scenes from the two movies.
You can see that the remake took a lot of its shot compositions from the original, and there's a lot to be said for the beautiful landscape you can see in the background in the panoramic older style.

Modern steadicam rigs however have a visible advantage over fixed tripods, and the acting IMHO is arguably better.

The Sisters Brothers and Bone Tomahawk are good new dark westerns that don't get enough love. John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix knock it out of the park in the first one, and probably has some of the best gunplay of any Western.

I have a cartridge conversion walker in .45 colt, but it's mainly because I wanted to take on a project. It's timing is iffy even after taking it to a machinist where you have to manually reverse the cylinder after cocking, and the lever still has a tendency to come loose during firing.
Thing's as big as my Model 29, but is kind of a pea shooter in comparison.

Fuck you Val was great as Von Cunth in MacGruber

1860-1895 in the American West and 1650-1780 in the Caribbean are, if not the coolest periods in world history, definitely the coolest in the Western Hemisphere.

Can't tell if pirates or cowboys are cooler though.

All were much darker in tone than I thought.

You want dark, watch The Last Hunt
It's got murder and rape and racism and a bunch of scenes of guys mowing down buffalo herds. It feels like a movie from 1969, but it's from 1956, and I have no idea how it got past the censors. Kind of a shitty movie, but way ahead of its time.
Also, obviously watch The Searchers if you haven't already. John Wayne plays a real bastard in that one.

Vera cruz 1954
Man of the west 1958
Magnificent 7 1960
Man of the west gave me huge cabin horror and RDR2 vibes

>It is essentially a short sword. Its it too large to do some knife stuff.
Seconding. Son and I bought cheap matching ones of this design and made up custom leather sheathes for them. They look impressive but are impractical for any real use.
I tested mine by cutting down a 1.5" sapling to use as a walking staff, basically using it as an axe.
A machete is better for clearing brush (thinner, lighter, longer), but this can cut a lot heavier stuff.

I own a walker, and it honestly feels that weak when I shoot it. Heavy bitch with a relatively light load.

>And fuck Tombstone; Val Kilmer has always been a dogshit overrated actor
The actual place is dogshit as well, I reccomend Bisbee to any traveler in that corner of AZ. Tombstone is glorified trailer park festering in the hot plains, Bisbee is an artsy-fartsy hippie town nestled in beautiful mountains

>Human dignity is BAD
You've never had a single thought of your own.
If every Jew and gay person disappeared overnight, you'd find a new minority group to pin your insecurities and failings on, because you're weak garbage.

And then the question everybody was asking was "why are we invading Germany when it was the Japs that attacked us?"

Are /pol/tards really this disconnected from reality?
>>
>>61524665
yes and no
yes, they are
no, in this case there was a widely reported sense of reluctance and perplexity as to why they were fighting the Germans. most GIs didn't feel the need to be involved in the European war, and in fact large numbers of the US Army were of German-American descent. that attitude only changed after Kasserine Pass for some, Normandy for the rest.

Because the Germans declared war on us, not the other way around

Agreed, but the original is a great film in its own right. Nostalgia is what carries a lot of the old movie.
>>
>>61508143
Great movie but for me it's still The Good The Bad and the Ugly. It's one of those very rare films where you always hear about it, you figure it can't possibly live up to the hype, then you actually watch it and it's actually a far better and more poignant film than most of its fans give it credit.

"the dude who no one takes seriously is the ultimate badass the entire time" is one trope that never gets old for me.

It's fucking surreal to me that Jimmy Stewart was a Brigadier General. It contrasts so fucking much with his film image.
