If you are going to build a shell on top of the tank anyway, which makes the turret useless. You may as well build no turret at all.The design will be simpler, thus cheaper, make the tank stronger and able to put a bigger gun on it.Also no gaps that can trap incoming fire from other tanks.

Speed + armament = fast tank destroyer; armor + armament = heavy tank destroyer, etc.But in the 1950's we had engines powerful enough to bear the weight of all three. So the main battle tank was born and medium tanks could reliably duel one another.

The only reason TDs ever existed was because the best solution for a dedicated anti-tank vehicle was one that could mount an upsized cannon, and it was already starting to become obsolescent as shaped charge warheads were figured out. Bradleys killed more Iraqi tanks in Desert Storm than Abrams because they were packing TOWs. IIRC Abrams were pretty low on the ladder for armored vehicle kills because aircraft were destroying so many ahead of them.
