>>61919184
>>61919137>should I just be able to replace those with the German style ones? No, the leaves are not interchangeable because the Lange sight uses a completely different base which also incorporates the flange to hold the rear of the Gew.98 handguard in place. >picture somewhat relatedWhat makes you think this is a Gew.98 rather than a foreign-contract rifle? Is it actually marked "Gew.98" on the receiver wall?
Those of you who hunt with surp- do you only use bubbaed surp with scopes, or do you try it with irons?
>>61919184I have several SKS stashed around the house. Too much effort to get them together for a photo. I am tempted to dig out my two favorites though. An Albanian and Yugo M59.>>61919309I used irons. I'm only shooting at deer with a SKS under 100 yards anyway.
>>61919364Did you have any lighting issues with the deer? I feel like irons would be tough in either the real early morning or the late evening
>>61919262>a couple years back my LGS had a RC K98>Portugeuse contract rifle that was made in either 42 or 43, contracts got cancelled as all production went to war effort and it wound up on the Eastern Front>Was $750I so fucking regret not getting that thing, but I just didn't have the cash at the time because I just bought another rifle a week prior.
>>61839810Can I see pictures of the markings on the Israeli Enfield?
M1 carbine is best carbine
>south america editionI have nothing to contribute this time. Although when I shoot my friends Argie 91 it is absolutely a great rifle.
>>61919184My most elaborate crest.
>>61919499Run a metallic silver sharpie along the back of the sights so you can see them. I always hunted in heavily wooded and dense foliage so it's always low light for me.
>>61919951Oh very nice, which country's crest is that
>>61920037Is there any concern about damaging the sights? Like it not coming off or being bad for the metal
>>61920109It washes off with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Can also use glow in the dark nail polish or paint and just pick it off if that much of a concern. Be sure to hit them with a UV light to charge them
>>61920094Portugal, the rifle is a Portuguese M937A made by Mauser Oberndorf probably in 1937-1938.
>>61920094Anon it literally says it on file name.

Best carcano to get?Which m1 carbine to get that won't break the bank?
>>61919299>What makes you think this is a Gew.98 rather than a foreign-contract rifle?Honestly, a certain degree of ignorance. It's been forever since I last researched WW1 era rifles. I knew the basics of the G98 but not about the variants. This was an unplanned purchase, really. Guess I should have known something was up when I saw there was no crest on the receiver, only the "DWM" mark on the side.
>>61921820Japanese Carcano if can find them. They were built to a much higher standard and the quality is the best I've ever seen in a Carcano.
>>61921820>Best carcano to get?long one>Which m1 carbine to get that won't break the bank?anything other than a Winchester or a true paratrooper
>>61922378You can find the post war refurb m1 carbines 12 to 1500ish. Avoid any of the commercial guns
>>61922378Wrong anon meant for >>61921820
>>61922089>>61922378Any reason why not to get the short ones that are cheap?
>>61919184Imagine needing a Mauser for a South American crest
>>61919184But here is one, OG Brazilian crest.
>>61921989>no crest on the receiver, only the "DWM" mark on the side.A DWM-made Gew.98 would have the factory name marked on the top of the receiver ring; the side wall would be marked "Gew.98".
>>61921613>imagine the muzzle flashIt's fine.
>>61921820I found an M91/41 longboi in 6.5 for $250 a couple months ago in damn near mint shape, no import mark either. Many were made and never issued, or refurbed in the immediate post war period by the Italians. If you're going strictly for condition and want an excellent bore, a later M91/41 is your best bet. The Japanese Type I rifle is dope, but 6.5 Carcano is marginally easier to find than 6.5 Japanese, at least in my area (VA). Best of luck
muzzle flash?
Does anyone else have issues feeding soft points into an M95? They get in there eventually, but it takes some real manhandling to get it ready to fire
>>61921698Be the change you want to see. Just source a new barrel
>>61924872I'll keep an eye out. The type 1 would be cool, but I'd rather have an Italian rifle. I've already got arisakas.
It's a miracle bros, I found a complete M1917 for under $1k. Winchester marked, 430k serial range. Bore is great, no bong or leaf markings though (red paint stripe on stock, broadhead arrow stamp). Bolt doesn't match and is marked "58." Maybe this was supplied to the Chinese nationalists in the late 40's, but I've heard their guns were often counter-bored and had scrubbed receivers. Anyone know where else Century imported these from, 'cause something is very wrong with that rack number if it's supposed to be "77".
Going to shoot my Civil Guard tomorrow, can't wait to see how it handles. Especially with the blue German training ammo.
>>61919258finally, 400 bucks lighter but i got one! 1915 Carl Gustav, for drills with threaded muzzle, former owner claimed it was artillery? Got one of the new barrels in the 50s, basically factory new barrel, my first cock on close. Only the rear barrel band sits kinda loose, its an replacement with crossed out number, also bayonet sits loose over thread, thinking of getting one of these brakes with the 4 slits. Anyone got one of these, any exoerience?
>>61927190better view of the sights, honestly surpsied how great they are, much better than a V notch
>>61927203also does anyone know what kinda wood this is? should be european beech, but im not sure, my other rifles have either much darker walnut or brighter wood, not this reddish
>>61927190Good price. I rarely get jealous but you got me this time
>>61927264thanks, was a great find, i also got somethign even greater i can pick up later in august: a chilean M1895 in pure mint condition, Loewe made for 350. but this one was great as well, just finished cleaning, all in order and smeered with thin amount of grease, like it should be
where do you guys read about milsurp? There's so much stuff in these threads that I have no idea what it is (besides the really well known or common stuff) and I want to know more. I guess I could use wikipedia but is there like a consolidated source just about surp rifles or like some sort of visual guide like pic related?
>>61929149From a skin deep level, yes you can start at a wikipedia about a gun or caliber to get the basic understanding. From there you need to branch off into books specifically about the gun or the family of guns or more specific websites or videos dedicated to them. There are some good book anons ITT so i'll let them post thoseAnother place to start or to use as references are boomer serial number and markings table websites. The more the webpage looks like it was made in the 90's, the better.
I think I just learned the hard way you can damage blueing with a brass brush... should I see about getting the finish touched up professionally or just live with my fuckup?
>>61926560>Bolt doesn't match and is marked "58." Maybe this was supplied to the Chinese nationalists in the late 40's, but I've heard their guns were often counter-bored and had scrubbed receivers.Do you have any more pics of it? I had a Chinese used M1917 (one of the cut down ones) that was matched with the last 2 digits of the serial number on the bolt and last 3 on the floorplate. I said had because I stupidly sold it and had to find another. Not all of the Chinese used M1917s have numbered parts btw. Just some do and some don't.I've been trying to do a survey on Chinese used M1917s (and 03s for that matter) but it's really tough to find them. There is only one example with a scrubbed receiver so I wouldn't take it to mean anything.
>>61930150>>61926560I have a scrubbed receiver 1917 too.
>>61926560>something is very wrong with that rack number if it's supposed to be "77".It looks like "62" in Arabic numerals. Old US rifles were floating around the Middle East/North Africa since the 1950s and Century imported rifles from several of those countries, like Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Israel etc. >>61927190>400Good deal. >former owner claimed it was artillery? The threaded muzzle is for the blank firing adapter; rifles so modified were designed m/38b. You can get a thread protector which will provide the proper outer diameter for the bayonet's muzzle ring. Originals were steel or nylon but there are reproduction steel ones available. https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/15230>>61927203>>61927218>what kinda woodI think it's probably walnut, but the Swedes used a lot of different stuff. Color doesn't really tell much; the stocks were stained before being finished with oil.

>>61933139Auto Ordnance M1's aren't terrible, especially when they're nearly 1/3rd of the price. My mother's carbine only had a couple of issues initially, being a really weak recoil spring that caused FTF's until I replaced it with a Wolff spring. That and the operating slide cutout for the bolt lug was out of spec and gouging the bolt. Found out that Auto Ordnance had great customer support from that even though we were well out of warranty. They replaced the part for free, smoothed the gouges out, only charged for the labor, and got the thing back to us within a week.
>>61932417its all remshit
>>61932020Images you can hear.
>>61925499My M95 has been stiff since I got it, even with FMJ. I made a post in QTDDTOT about an issue I had where when I tried to cycle a round in, the round hit the bottom of the chamber and pushed the bullet into the case. I pulled it out with some pliers but couldn’t get it to sit where it should. I’m just leaning toward not shooting this one.
>>61933713thats interesting, mine gets nigh impossible to open after a few shots. i found what looks like small scratches in the chamber, could be that the brass expands in it and thus gets sticky? works fine when cycling dry or without firing with real or snaps, dunno, otherwise in perfect condition
>>61930362>I have a scrubbed receiver 1917 too.Bost.Neither of the Chinese used M1917s I've had were scrubbed. I've only seen that one. IIRC that scrubbed one also had some Arabic markings over the Chinese militia markings.

>>61936300All the serials and barrel date is scrubbed
>>61936314Is it import-marked?

I just bought this wire wrapped Ishapore, and it's soaked in cosmoline. Obviously I don't want to bubba it and remove the wire, so I can't separate the wood from the rest of the gun. Generally I use a method of baking cosmoline out of wood with a heat gun and foil wrapped around it to create a mini oven, but I'm wondering if once I start heating the metal parts too, could it cause damage to the rifle?Any suggestions as to how else I can remove cosmoline from the wood so it's not so sticky to handle? I'm avoiding using mineral spirits because I don't want to strip the original finish underneath. Thanks in advance for any advice, /k/omrades.Also feel free to show off your Ishapores.
>>61937081>Any suggestions as to how else I can remove cosmoline from the woodits summer, stick it outside for a few hours
>>61934237It's likely residual cosmoline in the chamber rapidly heating up, cooling ,and sticking to casing as you shoot. Lightly coat a chamber brush you don't mind sacrificing in Flitz metal polishing compound, attach it to a section of cleaning rod, chock that shit up in a power drill, and polish the chamber. I did this to my M95 and all my Mosins, sticky bolt is a thing of the past.
>>61933139>FultonsAt this price point you might as well get an actual M1.
>>61936416>>61936314>>61935484kneel before knil. and sirius patrol.
>>61936469Neat. I wonder if they added the new serial on the left side >>61936300 God knows where it came from.
>>61933067I wonder why American guns never had a big fast crest.
>>61941660Fancy dies cost $$$. We did occasionally put the eagle on some things like lock plates and on the Springfield-made M1911s.
>>61936300>>61936314Weird. Some do say that the scrubbed M1917 are Chinese. Hard to really tell unless the stock is Chinese marked. Both of my Chinese cut down M1917s aren't scrubbed. China is a big country though. It could have just been easily one or two provinces scrubbing them.

Hey /msg/ here’s my collection so far, I posted about finding 56-50, and 50-70 a few threads back and totally forgot to give a picture of my part of my grandfathers collection as well as my own. What I have from my Grandfathers collection is as follows from top to bottom: 1870 trap door, reproduction Custer revolver, Confederate tower, Colt Da revolver in .38, Octagonal break squirrel gun, Musket that was found in a river- I can’t remember the lore sorry, Union saber, Starr Da revolver with matching numbers, confederate saber, reproduction Clot Sa revolver, another saber, artillery short sword, Iver Johnson .32 safety, cutdown 1873 trap door, another reproduction revolver, 1970’s Colt Sa Army in .38 sp Burnside carbine, Sharps carbine, and a Spencer carbine. This was just half of what he had my uncle got the other half. I personally own a 42 duv k98, 44 bcd k98, 44 cyq p.38, 47 Spanish m43, Steyr m.95, Yugo sks, and a Winchester model 1897 from the ~40’s

>>61939491dont cry for me peruuuuu o waitnice stabby btw.anyways, the 1891 cavalry carbine here has a numrich repro bolt because the original was broken. bore is clean, some pitting on the bore under the handguard. never took it out of the stock, upper band screw is very tight and goes into the wood, dont wanna ruin it. so i dont know if there is more pitting in more critical areas under the wood. never fired it, overall condition is good. sell or keep it as a wallhanger?
>>61946478>sell or keep it as a wallhanger?Do you like having it? Then keep it. If however, you look at it and feel no affection then pass it on to someone else and use the money gained to put toward something you do.

How many of you stopped shooting because ammo costs too much?>inb4 reloadhave you looked at the price of rifle powders recently?
>>61957984I don't shoot much because my range is limited to paper targets, and I just find it kind of boring because you can't see your hits until the range goes cold every 30 minutes. I got a spotting glass to see if I can observe my groups from the stand. Hopefully it's a success.
>>61937081one method I've seen suggested is put the rifle in a black trash bag and leave it in the sun for a few hours.
>>61953092If you can, go to one of their stores in person. There are rack grades with 1 muzzle and throat, and those with 6.
>>61957984Na, the prices come with shooting these calibers.Maybe not shoot the real expensive ones as often, but still get around to it now and then
>>61958147>range is limited to paper targets, that sucks anon. nothing beats the sound of rounds downrange hitting steel, especially full sized surp rifle rounds. >>61959666I guess thats true, Satan. I've been eternally blessed with living in a state with tons of free and open state/fed land to shoot on and a few friends/family with land too. Fundraising fish fry every Friday evening during fall and winter seasons. >do they let you shoot whatever you want however you want? (safely of course)No, there are some dumb Fudd rules like "no .50-cal centerfire" and "no full-auto/bumpfire".
>see auction online for huge ammo warehouse>win a lot of surplus German 8x57>a little expensive for standard for ball with shipping but already committed>receive it today>it's all SmK ammoPleasantly surprised as it was not advertised as such. I think I need some German ammo cans to store it all now.
>>61963197Lots of places have been trying to get rid of that, but they want too much for it.
>>61963209Yeah, I see quite a few places asking a bit more for it, mine came out to roughly 61cpr all said and done. J&G has it for 67cpr but doesn't include shipping. None of mine is corroded unlike some of the stuff still available.
>>61962881>"no .50-cal centerfire"Retards think all .50 cal = .50bmg. No good reason why you can shoot other rifle calibers but not .50 beowulf, .50ae, .50-90 sharps, or whatever else simply because the bullet diameter makes people have a hissy fit.
How tough is it to find 9mm Steyr? I've looked online and am only seeing surplus in stock, and even then, that's only here and there.
Best method of rebluing a 4th change hand ejector? >bubba noThe finish is beaten to absolute shit well beyond normal patina. Two of the chambers also have timing issues because the cylinder notches are peened so I will have to correct those. Right now I plan to take the gun apart and soak it in vinegar to strip the remaining blueing. I plan to use potassium nitrate for the new finish unless there’s a better method. Thanks for reading my blogpost and any advice is appreciated
Hello /msg/ what's the prices of mosin pu these days? I went to a gun shop and they had one for sale (didn't take any pics of it) for 1,395(?) And was a CAI import, Im expecting that the scope on it is newer and had that forced match writing on it. Some parts were matching such as the receiver and the bolt. Is it a bad deal or just a little too much?
>>61963586Specifying centerfire is funny to me. Did some guy with a Spencer complain?
>>61963990Backyard Ballistics has the best tutorial on giving it a period authentic rust bluing. It's a bit of work tho.https://youtu.be/4OhhBIN1Odw
>>61964346Do your research before trying to buy a PU mosin. They're probably one of the most faked guns out there, and I don't know how much obviously faked PU mosins actually go for these days, but I wouldn't spend even half that price on one. It'll look cool but it'll still shoot like absolute shit. The easiest way to tell apart the low effort fakes is if it has any date other than 42, 43, or 44. And the Century-made fakes will be marked "M91/30S". But again, do your research.
>>61964540From what the date on the rifle was 43, probably won't get it though it does look cool but as you said I do need more research put in for a mosin pu before committing a buy like that, thank you anon
>>61964736If it is real, and it's in good condition, then it's a good deal, but I wouldn't buy it unless I could look over every inch of it in person and confirm it beyond a shadow of a doubt. There's plenty of info online about the topic.
>>61963586There's no good reason not to shoot .50 BMG; as the Fudds die we will change this. Consider that the original author didn't realize that 12GA slugs are also >.5" center-fire. >>61964404>Specifying centerfire is funny to meThe next line specifically exempts muzzleloaders from the .5" limit.
>>61964404Probably because people kept asking.
>>61965041The mosin was in pretty good condition, the stock had a good shine to it, I'm currently reading on the mosin forum about those imports since the scope is newer and I have to look at the import markings again, I'll go back and get a pics of it, athough i wont get it since soemthing else caught my eye, but for reference and opinions on it
>>61919184Is there any advantage to cavalry carbines having a barrel band different from the infantry rifles or is it just aesthetics?
>>61968097Did you have a particular example in mind? Usually cavalry carbines are slung differently when compared to infantry rifles because the cavalryman is on a moving horse and keeping the weapon attached to his person is more important because he cannot just turn around and pick it up if he drops it, and he may have to let go of the carbine and quickly draw his sword when coming to close quarters with the enemy. As actual combat from horseback diminished carbines usually became fitted to sling more like infantry rifles. Pic related did not have side sling loops as originally manufactured, just a "D" ring on the underside of the wrist for a single-point sling that attached the carbine to a sash worn diagonally around the chest of the trooper. When not in the trooper's hands the carbine's fore-end went into a scabbard on the right rear of his saddle. Later the "D" ring was moved to the left rear of the butt and the lower barrel band fitted with a pivoting loop for attaching a conventional two-point sling
>>61967481Check if the barrel shank has these big markings above the star, "C N" "C H" are the most often seen for PU rifles. If they're not on there it's 99% likely a fake. If the scope is newer it's probably an ex-PU that was rescoped. I got one with the mount holes plugged with weld.
>>61965459>>61962881Rough. Yea those are the things I guess im grateful I get to miss out on shooting on public/private land. I see your point though to since we'll outlive the boomers one would hope eventually the dumb boomer rules go with them.Although seeing how other boomer centered things are just disappearing as they die off. I wonder how many gun clubs and ranges will close over time as their boards and owners all start dyeing off on their kids/grandkids don't care to keep them going.also interesting im talking about this with you and your Springfield posts, I bought my 03 mainly cause I liked yours, and it filled a hole in my US surp pile too.

Cool to see so many south american mausers. Word of advice, if you anons ever get a Paraguayan mauser do not fire it. It was known for causing more deaths in the chaco war than the enemy sometimes. They blew up all the time. These rifles "Oviedo" mausers.

I have become aware of Danish Krags. That jacketed barrel gives me a strange lust.
>>61922898anon where and how did you get that short m1?
>>61972297It was built by Arlington Ordnance Inc. of Virginia circa 1995 on a November 1941 receiver. This one is chambered for 7.62NATO. So-called “Tanker” M1s are a commercial product originally started by Federal Ordnance Co back in the ‘60s using re-welded scrapped receivers. Later Arlington and Springfield Armory Inc got in on the action using whole receivers. They emulate an experimental pattern commissioned by the Pacific Warfare Board in 1944 and field trialed in the liberation of the Philippines. The 18” barrel was deemed too flashy and noisy and the project abandoned. The sole surviving example at Springfield NHS may have inspired the commercial ones.

>>61971420>I bought my 03 mainly cause I liked yoursWe happy few, inspiring each other to buy more surp. That's truly a thing of beauty. I'm currently scrounging coin together for a G33/40. Probably won't happen til Christmas.
>>61973138>I'm currently scrounging coin together for a G33/40. Probably won't happen til Christmas.Nice, hope you find a nice one as they are few and far between. Every time I see a G33/40 for sale, it's usually heavily sanded and either refinished or horribly neglected. For me, it's a hunt for a nice Gewehr 98 or Kar98a.
>>61972753Rare. How does it shoot?>>61973138Good luck Anon.
>>61973556>heavily sandedAlways the German guns that get butchered by sandpaper. I can count how many K98k's I've seen in 15 years of collecting, that weren't altered, on both hands. Thankfully there are retards who don't notice how odd a Mauser with worn metal looks in a seemingly brand new stock to everyone else.
>>61972753AYY YO! Is that a fucking Madsen rifle?!?BASED!
>>61971591After conducting further research, I've realized 8x58 Danish is impossible to obtain, and Norwegian Krags can shoot 6.5 Swede. I've never seen a Norwegian Krag in person before. Anyone know how obtainable they are? There's one on GB right now for $1,400, so I assume it's worth about $1,000.
>>61974712DO NOT shoot commercial 6.5 through a krag. They're frail as fuck and prone to cracking without the proper load.
How the fuck do I get stripper clips that work for a SKS?? I bought some new ones that are absolutely worthless and unusable. What country makes decent ones? I really don’t want to pay 40$ for 10 eastern euro surp ones, but is that my only option? Is there a particular brand of new ones that can actually hold 7.62 and freed them into the fixed mag smoothly?
>>61976368I tried fucking with the ones I have to make the rounds actually fit the channels but now rounds fall out not only from the ends but middle. Any amount I tighten these trash clips back after loosening them they return to being unable to feed ammunition
>>61976368The only ones that work are russian and czech.Find a canadian and buy some bxn clips.
>>61976760Went ahead and bought some chech ones. 3 dollars a piece oh well. The days of paying pinches of salt for surp shit is over. I did add a bunch of Chinese surp shit to my cart and it’s incredibly cheap for what it is. I reckon 50% of it might be reproduction shit with random Chinese characters and dates stamped on for profit but I’ll still take it it seems high quality.
Got a July 1942 Garand. Going to guess from the small pitting on most of the WW2 metal it went to a dry region like North Africa
>>61977096Pitting is consistent on all the parts and up to portions of the receiver. Parking on everything is the same, minus the trigger guard and sight replacement in the 50s. Barrel is a 1944 replacement. Dark but rifled. Should make a good shooter
>>61977110
>>61976068Thanks for the heads up anon. Guess that's what happens when there's only one locking lug.
>>61974561Theres one on Liberty Tree right nowhttps://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=16806&idcategory=2
>>61977096>>61977110Probably one of the Phillipines returns the CMP got. They're mostly WW2 dated guns and pitted
>>61977814Thanks. Confirms what I've been reading. Apparently pitting isn't that bad from other photos I've seen for the Philippine cmps. It's not actively rusting, traded an Aero AR10 for it, and just noticed CMP is sold out of all 30-06 garands last couple of weeks. Happy with it as my first American surplus.
>>61978695>Happy with it as my first American surplus.Congratulations, Anon.
>>61974525>>61974561Lucked into it at a massive auction about 90 miles from me. Got a few more things for good prices, too. It was all one man’s collection and he had a massive amount of stuff. The auction house is half retarded and their descriptions for stuff was barely a step above “gun.” This one said “Mauser 30 Carbine” which may have helped me get it for under $600. Anywho, it didn’t shoot worth a fuck with my normal 30-06 reloads with boat tail bullets. I had to get normal flat based spitzer bullets and it shoots fine. Kind of “blasty” with the muzzle brake so that’s fun. Recoil is little more harsh than most rifles, probably because it’s a little lighter than your typical Mauser or most other surplus rifles. I like the sights on it, too.
>>61979891Oops. By “this one” I meant the Madsen, not the Argentine.
>>61979619>Amberg 1904Now that's a crest you don't see on most Gewehr 98s, where did you find it and how much did it run you? I'm still trying to find a nice mostly matching Gewehr 98 but they are quite difficult to find.
>>61978732What's some good ammo outside of the stuff CMP sells for the garand? I see aimsurplus has some garand safe ppu 30-06 at a dollar a round.
>>61972753I'd never heard of these until this thread, damn that's actually a super cool rifle.
Is the linked screw the right one for the missing one in the picture? I was taking my M95 apart to clean her magazine, and the screw fell through a crack in the deck. I looked for upwards of 45 minutes, and I’m seeing if I can get a metal detector from a family friend, but if I can’t, I think that I’ve just gotta order a replacement, much as it hurts my hearthttps://mg34.com/product/m-95-follower-assy-spg-screw/
>>61980643>I see aimsurplus has some garand safe ppu 30-06 at a dollar a round.I can't speak to its use in an M1 since my Garand is in 7.62NATO, but I've shot a lot of PPU in my M1903s and it's fine.
>>61980643I've been using nothing but that M2 ball spec stuff from PPU in my M1 and 03A3 and I'm in agreement with>>61981352Functions fine, solid accuracy.
>>61981352I just picked up a menagerie of slightly corroded 30-06 on Garand clips for $0.37 a round…
>>61980643Get an adjustible gas plug like I finally did after three years, and shoot whatever the fuck you want worry free.
>>61980204I bought it from a friend for €250, but it is non matching.
>>61981178Looks correct to me. I just looked at one of mine, and it's a pretty stubby screw. Consider yourself lucky it's available and only $2. Other screws on the M95 are practically unobtainium.
>>61980643M2 ball, PPU 150g, AE 150g (for M1 garand).its all good.

Any Enfield enjoyers? I found an all numbers matching 48' Fazakerley No4 MK1 with South African markings but there's no typical broad arrow or U stamps (government acceptance) on the receiver itself like there is on the stock. What's the meaning of this?
>>61919184/akg/ autist here, if I were to get just one Russian Mosin which one should I get?Ideally I'd want a pre-WW2 one but early war could still be fine. But I don't really know if the mid, late, or postwar ones have an appreciable difference. I'm less interested in a very early rifle so I'm not considering M91s (except M91/30s obviously)I'd want a shooter and I've heard M91/30s are much more pleasant than M38s and M44s but I'm a glutton for pain so maybe those would be better in that case. I'm not interested in a Sniper either, they're too expensive for a rifle I'd rather not shoot considering its rarity. What kind of beans we looking here? Thanks
>>61984424Just find a nice 91/30 for $300
>>61980643A lot of commercial .30-'06 is safe to use in an M1. https://www.garandgear.com/the-m1-garand-and-commercial-ammunition/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOSdswZHJUchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kKTrT9_Fus&t=0s
>>6198442491/30 is just a better rifle than the m91, they are also the most common(cheapest). The upgraded sights make shooting more enjoyable and the shorter barrel is more easily maneuvered. The m38 is just a carbine version of the 91/30. The m44 is basically a m38 with an integral bayonetTheres no real difference between izhevsk and tula rifles so get whichever is avaliable
>>61984424Get an M91/30. Try to find one with a good trigger, some of them are just plain horrid even after polishing the contact points. If you don't like rough machining and chatter marks find a pre-war rifle. Don't let some boomer try to rob you of $600+ because it's "all matching" either. Best of luck.
>>61981178Following up on this, is it possible to shoot an M95 as a single shot without using an en bloc in the magazine? I’m taking a girl to the range this weekend before the screw arrives and I’d like to be able to show off this one off even if it won’t be fully functional
>>61986864Yes, just need to balance the round on the follower and move the bolt forward so it catches the round and feeds it. Pretty smooth to do if you get the hang of it.Although at that point, if youre trying to show off, just wait for next time unless you dont think youll have another chance with this girl
I found this while looking for Krag porn. Just a dude appreciating his rifles and letting us join the experience. It's a comfy format.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ7GKDov1NQ
>>61986889Alright, I’ll see if I can get it to feed when I get home from work today. On the topic of waiting, I certainly could wait, but we’re not gonna see each other until mid-August and I’ve been talking her ear off about the M95 since I got it. She’s excited to go shooting with me, and I’d rather bring my two surplus rifles than just one. I’ll see if I can get it to feed smoothly, and if not then I’ll consider just waiting

alright goys, i asked you for advice with the swede, the M1895 Chilean and bought both, now i return to ask for more: Got the chance to buy a mint peruvian 1909, everything mint, never issued, for 600. looks fucking amazing but i guess 7,65x53 is kinda hard to find, should i do it? i got some funds left and i really fuckign want a gewehr 98, but this might be even better

>>61994297Why don't they make rifles with the fully covered barrel anymore? When people sporterize old milsurp rifles they always cut away the barrel part of the wood...does that make it better for hunting, or something?Looks so fucking good. I don't understand why no modern bolt actions do that.
>>61995535mainly weight saving and improving of balance for hooonting (less weight in front means you can swing the barrel around faster). main reason for this in the first place was being able to grip the rifle in weird palces when you have to move in combat or fight with a bayonet, also when you shoot fast for longer, the barrel will get really hot and the wood protects you from the heat. with a hunting rifle you wont have to shoot as much as fast, so the cooling of an open barrel is preferred to the better heat protection of an enclosed on. But you are right, it looks fucking sick and i want it
Sup /msg/ I decided to gamble and bought one of the jg sales gss kar98 and got this one with almost everything minus the rear sight and magazine. I need some advice on reparing cracks in the stock as there quite small or would be hard to get glue in them to hold it togther. I'll post a picture of one in a minute or two.
>>61996610Kinda hard to see but it's in the middle.
>>61996652The least invasive way is probably to buy a syringe and box of needles off amazon, fill the syringe with wood glue, and use that to fill the crack.
Can somebody explain M95 bayonets to me? I heard from one guy that you can get any bayonet to fit any gun, and read somewhere else that only a rifle bayonet will fit a rifle and only a carbine bayonet will fit a carbine etc, and from someone else that any will fit any, but that only a match will be snug.
>>61995535They still make them. They're niche, but they'll never be extinct. Short stocks are more popular because they generally have much better barrel harmonics. They're easier to bed, and much easier to free float. And the weight savings are significant. Full length/Mannlicher style stocks are mainly made for how cool they look.
>>61995452>a mint peruvian 1909, everything mint, never issued, for 600.Do it faggot; that's a great price for an all-matching Peruvian in that condition.
>>61997071My sole M.95 bayonet has fit on two of the four M.95s I have owned, and on those two it is so snug on the lug that a mallet is required to tap it off. Ideally the M.95 bayonet should be compatible across all models, however manufacturing tolerances do not always make that a practical reality.
Well I did it, I bought the $1k scaffolding tube.>>61984424I'm quite fond of my 1938 carbine, it's fun sized, groups decently and the huge fireball is just a bonus.Never could get over the fixed bayonet on the 1944, it just looks goofy and the asymmetry fucks with my 'tism. The recoil isn't terrible unless you're shooting prone in nothing but a t-shirt.Pretty hard to find one that wasn't counterbored though.

It's really the length Paul Mauser wanted; the only reason the longer "Standard" length M98 action is so prevalent is because that was what Germany wanted and they were by far the largest customer/manufacturer. >you got any idea where i can get some bumpless stripper clips?https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=409Probably on Ebay too if you want them cheaper.
Im doing a test on a rusted barrel to see if Gold Guard is able to penetrate the porous structure of small rust dots and finger prints. Tge mixed oxid layer that is in the contact between bare metall and rust is a big problem for rust inhibitors that are dissolved in oil which reduced efficency alot. Better is closing pores ir making them hydrophobic with a solid compound like normal wax. But wax needs to penetrate first which needs heating of steel and wax bath dipping. Since the waxy compounds in Gold Guard are dissolved its worth giving it a shot to see how it does. Current result is 2 days in rain. The airgun is internal rust shut since 13years so im not destroying anything here
>>62000313oh fuck we got science in here
>>62000117huh, interesting, thanks for the info! talking about the bayonet, just for fun, would any other bayonet that does use a muzzle ring fit this? cause it still got the mauser rail, so, if the barrel isnt some weird diameter it should fit right? just asking cause i got some south american mauser bayonets for the argentine 1909 in my sights, might be a nice fit until i can find a peruvian
>>62000534>would any other bayonet that does use a muzzle ring fit this? cause it still got the mauser rail, so, if the barrel isnt some weird diameter it should fit right? They should. It's the same outer diameter at the muzzle as most Mauser 98 rifles. >just asking cause i got some south american mauser bayonets for the argentine 1909 in my sights,Except for the first 3,000 Argie M1909 bayonets delivered, the majority of M1909s and all of the Argie M1891s will have the longer offset between muzzle ring and grip like in >>61979891 and >>61994025 . You need a bayonet with the short offset guard like the Brazilian one here >>61979903 that will put the bayonet handle in the correct position relative to the lug on the stock to allow the bayonet to slide on and latch.
>>62000383why not, all humting rifles and surplus rifles i found on the pickup wall in gunshops got rust spots and finger prints. I wanna test that before reaching out to gunsmiths to recommend Gold Guard on demaged guns :) Also got a test running with bare metall to see how a smooth surface deals with rust, having no pores helps alot to prevent surface covarage from rain (less direct water influence). The real test gonna be in 1 year with machines to see what type of ceramic coating or surface finish will do best in rain or humidity.
>>62000712very interesting, i swear, msg is continually one of the few high quality threads here. is there a book on the peruvian mauser like with the argentines or the chileans? love to read as much as i can about these gems, unfortunately so much knowledge is lost. here is hoping c&rsenal releases an episode on the peruvian, probably not but hey, they released the chilean one a day before i bought mine so fingers crossed

Not quite the norm, but I think it fits here. What's a fair price for a 1974 M16a1 clone? Looks like it was built from 1974 kit with C MP B barrel, and a new lower that has Colt markings correct for a '74 M16a1 engraved. Only two downsides I see are the front sight block was replaced with a newer one (owner says it was done with an undrilled FSB to match the drilled barrel) and the lower has the standard A2 supports instead of being an A1 profile

Only two downsides I see are the front sight block was replaced with a newer one (owner says it was done with an undrilled FSB to match the drilled barrel) and the lower has the standard A2 supports instead of being an A1 profileWell, the lower not being an A1 profile takes it down a bit in terms of clone autism. I put together my A1 back in 2020 for about $1200 all said and done, the only new production pieces were the lower(Brownell's M16A1 lower in gray) and the triggerguard, rest was original USGI parts. So maybe around $1000 since the lower ain't quite correct along with the FSB.
Wow, seems pretty cheap by today's standards. I'm seeing about $1500 since A1 kits are about $750, and pre-C MP Chrome Bore barrels are about $650-700ish. I also see the Colt retro rifles sell for around $2k, and I would've figured they'd be cheaper than genuine surplus.

>>62000117>>62005501thanks, do you have any idea whether swedish stripper clips fit the Peruvian 1909 with the weird extended stripper clip guide? heard from somewhere that the swedes work, would be pretty sweet since i got a fuckton of them
>>62007329Anything from the Austro-Hungarian era, maybe even WWI
>>62005916Affordable surp>South American Mausers>Post war MausersVery few people or collectors for these. They fly under the radar most of the time since they're not German WW2>Garands at CMP pricingQuick search most of the time can turn up a few garands at CMP pricing, not pumped up by boomers thinking they're unobtanium since they got them from CMP.>Excellent condition SKS.If paying tops of $500 for a SKS, might as well get an excellent condiiton
>>62008760>Anything from the Austri-Hungarian era, maybe even WWI.The Austro-Hungarian empire was dissolved after WWI. The Mannlicher series of straight pull rifles would probably be a good starting point and not too terribly expensive though the ammo will require reloading for anything not 8x56R.
>>62006302>>62008760People will sperg out and shit themselves for me even mentioning this, but an RTI M.95 should at least be on your radar.Yes, it's a gamble.Yes, you have to work to get it cleaned up and functional. No, it's not safe to shoot.Yes, we've heard it a billion times over already and anons will be telling me the same shit in here again now.I don't fucking care. It's a cool rifle and I'm sick of people saying it isn't.These rifles went from Austria-Hungary (WWI) to Italy (as war loot/reparations) to Colonial Italian East Africa (goat wars 1 through 6) to your retarded hands (Autism Acres Retirement Home for Wayward Surplus). They go on sale for VERY cheap and as >>62009393 mentioned, the ammo is impossible to find. BUTT, if you're just interested in a cool piece of history and a cleanup project that can get you a neat looking wall mount you don't seriously plan on ever shooting (beyond a few remote test fires innawoods), you should at least give it a serious consideration.
>>62008522>do you have any idea whether swedish stripper clips fit the Peruvian 1909 with the weird extended stripper clip guide?I don't know; they won't fit in my Turkish M1903/30 which also has the tall charger guide. Without even taking the lugs on each side of the Swede clips, the body of the Swede clips are a little bit wider than the body of the Argentine smooth-sided clips I have. The Argie clip body is the same width as my standard M98-pattern clips, so I imagine M98-pattern clips will work in the Peruvian M1909. >>62008760There are lots of Mannlicher M1895 straight-pull rifles and carbines on the market right now and they're $300-500 in good condition. The recent influx of ex-Ethiopian rifles has depressed the M.95 market.
>>62009991Sorry anon, but I am stepping my foot down and RTI is to be banished to the shadow realm.
How retarded would I be to start using a WWI surplus canteen for my everyday water carrying needs? Is it a 100% shot of trench AIDs, or more like 95%?
>>62010497don't be that faggot
>>62006191>Don't buy things just because they are sick dealz or (I know you didn't mention this) because they are """""""good investments""""""".Jokes on you shouldve gotten into french guns before ian made them popular>>62005916>What are some current must-have Milsurp that are currently available and reasonably priced right now thProtip ever notice how he's spending a lot of time in czech republic and former yugoslav recently? That's the next big collectible market, both majorly overlooked but only a matter of time until ian releases his next book
>>62009991>>62006302>I like unique shit that I like staring at knowing I have a piece of history in my hand>Frog avatarfag thinks buying things makes him uniqueDamn it sure is reddit in hereDaily reminder that buying and collecting objects is not a substitute for personality
Reddit screenshots and memes are no substitute for milsurp images.
>>62010817You retard the gun is unique not the one holding you absolute tard can you not read, please go slip on a banana.
>>62010817>enters thread about collecting old guns>"uhmm, ackchyually. collecting old guns doesn't mean you're old."Please make like a banana and split.
I love the snub nose on the No 1 Mk 3.
>>62012989It certainly is an iconic look. We almost had something similar: in 1905 when the US was designing a knife-style bayonet to replace the original "rod" bayonet of the M1903 one of the mounting variations they tried (rifle #76419 wherever it is now) was basically the SMLE nosecap.
>>62013213That is fascinating, I had no idea. Was this in a reference book?
>>62013236>Was this in a reference book?Pictures of it (and a couple other trials variants) are in William Brophy's book on the M1903. Hopefully the actual rifle is still in the Springfield NHS collection.
>>62013505God I love /msg/, I really do.
>>62013505And here's the bayonet mount that won out: literally just use a Krag band. Pity we didn't get the integrally-protected front sight and were instead blessed with the good idea that is the M1905 front sight cover.
>>62013505>Springfield NHS collectionMan I wish Ian got access to this collection, or they got their own guy to do vids on neat one off stuff sitting around like Royal Armories. The Garand Collector's Association got to go in and finger fuck Garand #1 so they should be open to it.https://youtu.be/iL6zwtetdLc
>>62009991>>62010259I am one of those anons who do buy shit from RTI. There been some good moments to purchase from them and doesn't hurt to have them on a newsletter to keep tabs. I can say for certain that the Mannlichers are a mixed bag. I bought a B grade carbine from Atlantic Firearms (which is obviously coming from the same source: I.O/RTI) and they gave me a cutdown instead of an authentic carbine. And the crack on that thing was bad. The bore and rifling are there but I may have to do extra work to make it useable since the stock could possibly split in half. Will see if I could get help from a buddy with it.
>>62013572>>62013505Neat
Love me M1917 Love me M24/47 Love me Mosin Love me Garand Simple as
>>62015473What the fuck, I don't remember posting this, those are all the surps I own too.
Had a very nice afternoon with my M59/66, I haven’t had shooting day dedicated to just an SKS in like 15 years and it was fun doing it again.
>>62015567Excellent taste then, anon.
I'm doing some reading up regarding for the upcoming CMP Krag saleJust wondering if pre-1899 rifles have a price premium on the collector market (no need for FFL etc). What is the probably of getting a proper antique Krag in this CMP sale? Or late model 1902-1903 are what we're gonna getYou think any of those Krags could be Philipine Constabulary?
>>62015816I 100% guarantee each one will be a chromed out stock cracked rust bucket from a VFW. Don't bank your Krag dreams on the CMP loot box drop.CMP is great for Garands, but the limited release stuff gets swept up fast by the boomers that circle it like vultures. the Krags will be no different
>>62015827I understand chrome has less resale value with collectors, but I don't care as long as I can shoot itWhat I'd love to do is to wave an SOOPER SCARY UNREGISTERED ASSAULT BOLT ACTION RIFLE in this uptight nanny ban stateApparently 1899 and later and it's super regulated and taxed out the wazoo here. But 1898 and before and cops can't touch you. Apparently you can even walk down the street with a loaded antique, which is banned here for decades for 99.99%.
>>62015867>Apparently 1899 and later and it's super regulated and taxed out the wazoo herewhich Euro hell is that?
>>62015867please do not ruin it for everyone and be an open carry autismo
>>62015816>Just wondering if pre-1899 rifles have a price premium on the collector marketThey do.>What is the probably of getting a proper antique Krag in this CMP sale? Most likely low; the same probability as you getting a pre-A1 M1911 from the CMP 1911 program. Rifles that went into service early are also those most likely to have been worn into un-serviceability first.>>62015816>You think any of those Krags could be Philipine Constabulary? No, there is no evidence that Philippine Krags were ever brought back to the US. All the short Krag rifles here are cadet rifles or Bannerman/Sedgley/Stokes-Kirk creations.
>>62015872Commiefornia firearm excise taxes increased from 9% to 20% just in time for July 4
>>62015867>as long as I can shoot itThey're shot to shit from being use with blanks and not cleaned for decades
>>61929149>read about milsurpdig up some of the older military firearms general references by the likes of Ian V. Hogg (U.K. edition books particularly), and Edward Clinton Ezell ('Small Arms of the World'), to start. 'Military Small Arms of the 20th Century' by Hogg and John Weeks is another excellent overall reference, look for the 1970s older editions.there are a lot of specialist volumes (the sort of books Ian of ForgottenWeapons has on his library shelf) which concentrate on particular makes, countries, and discrete types of firearms but many of these books were produced in limited editions of a few thousand copies or less and are difficult to obtain; most of these books you won't really 'need' unless you get into autist-level collecting of particular guns or your collection becomes gigatier.
Good job hitting the image cap Anons. >>62017368
