The real tragedy of the troubles is that all of it could have been avoided. the northern counties only voted to stay in the UK due to a slight protestant majority.during WWII there where a lot of catholics that migrated to the north to work in the shipyards and other war production. most of them went back south after the war ended and the war production jobs went away but enough remained to endanger the protestant majority. the protestants whereby all account huge dicks to the catholics. they barred both the recent arrivals and those that had been there since before the protestant plantations were set up from nearly all government jobs and discriminated against the catholics in the private sector since the big employers in the area where all protestant owned.this created a large population of poor and discriminated catholics. fertile breeding ground for both marxist and nationalist ideology.at first there where non-violent protests to demand an end to discrimination. the London government didn't intervene to end discrimination against UK citizens. the London government didn't intervene when the ulster loyalists cracked down violently on those peaceful protests. They let the ulster protestants abuse other UK citizens because the abused where irish catholics. they only intervened after the 1969 riots that saw large scale arson against catholic business and homes. simply because they could ignore it anymore since the catholics were starting to fight back and carry out their own acts of violence.when in 1974 a power sharing agreement was reached the protestants carried out the bloodiest car bombings and held a general strike to prevent peace. Simply because they couldn’t stomach treating the catholics as fellow human beings and fellow UK citizens with the same rights as they hadthat's right the Good Friday agreement could have been reached over 20 years early, but the protestants didn't want to power share. London went along with it being neutral and all that
