Hello /k/

Trade offer: your advice for my meme.
picrel: who's going to get it first?

I am interested in getting my first gun. I've only shot .22s and 12/20 gauges before (Boy scout).

I want something for home defense, and that is legal to carry on my person or in a safe in my car. I am in California.

I am open to the possibility that there may not be just one gun that does it all, and might need 2+ guns.

sorry i didn't read your post at all.
>carry on my person
depends on the county if you can even get a permit to carry. what county?
>>
>>64864406
You win! That is indeed a Colt 1851 navy revolver as famously used by Clint Eastwood in The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

Well, I tried to make it entertaining for you /k/. Still need advice please

>carry
what county you might not even be able to.
>carry and HD
pistol with the ability to attach light. go to a range and shoot a few. budget?
>>
>>64864407
Mendocino. You have to take a concealed carry course from the sheriff, but it seems greenlit otherwise.
>>

Mendocino.

Budget isn't an issue, I prefer reliability and dependability (and ofc legality) over all else.

ive heard good things for that county. any shooting ranges near you that you can rent a gun? caliber at this point doesn't really matter get something that is comfortable.
also keep in mind if you ever use it legally or otherwise you'll never see the gun again 9/10 times so don't feel like you need to get something too fancy.
>>
>>64864415
I had not considered renting a gun. I assume you mean renting range time with a gun, to get the feel of firing it. I am happy to drive to a range and rent to try-before-buy. It might not be in my county, but I'll figure that part out on my lonesome. If anyone recommends a NorCal range from experience, I'd be happy to give them my patronage.

I don't want fancy, but I also had not considered the point that legal use = taken by investigators, so thanks for the tip I won't pay to get it engraved or whatever.

Ability to attach a light. A laser? A flashlight?

you should do some research on where the 16 hour classes are held for the CCW if you are serious about carrying it. they will require you to shoot a target to prove worthiness, and there you'll probably find the instructor as well as guns to rent. Don't hesitate to ask a professional for advice.

no offense but you seem very new to handguns, you might consider a revolver in 38 spc or 357. you don't have to think too hard to use it, you get your 5 or 6 shots, and they are very reliable. Ruger makes a good enough revolver called the LCR that comes in a few sizes and calibers that would be good enough. would be good enough to carry, good enough to night stand, good enough overall to start with. Savings in initial firearm purchase can be used to purchase ammunition to practice with for proficiency.

Think of it like poker -
Having one is the Ace, shot placement is King, caliber in Queen and everything after that is for jackasses.
>>
>>64864440
Will do!

None taken. Yes I couldn't be more new to handguns. Guns in general I am not well versed in, but at least I've shot and been trained in safety/maintenance for basic rifle and shotgun. Never even fired a handgun.

Thanks for the advice! You were very helpful.

no problem, this almost counts as buying a gun vicariously through you for me.

most of these CCW instructors will also offer generic classes on good firearm handling / practice. If money isn't an issue at all I'd suggest taking a class or two like that before the CCW classes. Take your time and make sure you are ready and able to carry with confidence. getting a gun you wont carry or wont use at home because you aren't comfortable or confident with it makes it a paperweight rather than a real self defense tool.

For further consideration I have 4 guns on my permit; a glock 19 and 34 (has a red dot), a kahr mk9 and a smith and wesson 629 4" in 44 mag. Out of all the guns the one gun I carry the most, have shot the most, and am the most accurate and confident with is the Kahr mk9. it fits in my pocket and goes everywhere I go regardless of weather, and I've probably shot 2 to 3 thousand rounds through it. Mind you i'm great with the other guns, and they all have their own good reasons to carry one reason or another. but I've still got my pocket gun in my pocket in addition to the larger gun.

Most of all, have fun!

Pretty sure G19s of some generation are CA legal, and while I'd normally suggest an AR-15 for HD, the restrictions you'd be dealing with in CA negate a lot of the advantages of a rifle. Hard to beat a G19 as a general "do everything gun", but there's a reason subcompact double stacks like the Hellcat have eaten the CCW market since they're much easier to carry, so you should look if any of the variations of that design are CA legal, and if so, consider one for carry and then it might be worth dealing with jumping through the hoops to make a compliant AR-15, or any other modern semi-auto in 5.56 if you detest the way a compliant AR looks and would prefer something less of an abomination.

Don't bother with any flavor of Glock right now, CA effectively banned all current Glocks under the AB1127 cruciform trigger bar ban. You can still buy one through PPT or existing FFL inventory but they're becoming quite rare and expensive (hitting a grand easy) with every boomer going I KNOWS WHAT I GOT. If you're dead set on a Glock wait until July, Glock is coming up with AB1127-compliant models that should hit the Safe Handgun Roster by then. Or just buy a Derya DY9 which is literally a Glock 19-alike with a magwell funnel, compliant trigger system, and uses Glock 17/19 mags, all for $300 from your local Turner's.

Definitely going to take all the classes :) I want gun ed like drivers ed
>>64864499
>>64864520
Thank you both. How do you learn all this stuff about which guns are currently legal or not?
Is there a source anyone recommends for gun law notifications? All I really know is the NRA resources
>>

>want gun ed like drivers ed
Thats not what you get. You get dui level braindead classes of just sit in this room for 8hours. They wont teach you to shoot or anything fun like that.
Google ca hangun roster and pick something off that

This. CA doesn't work like that. Also 4chan keeps saying my informative post is spam, what the fuck did Hiromoot do this time?
>>
Okay OP, you need to go on CAGuns and the CA DOJ website for info, NRA is fucking useless since they haven't really updated in years and CA keeps changing their laws. Even the CAGuns subreddit is faster and more accurate which is sad. Anyways you will need an Firearms Safety Certificate to buy a firearm in CA, and proof of residency for a handgun purchase. Check the DOJ website for more info on those, and the Safe Handgun Roster list as well. If it's not on the list, you're probably paying 200-5500% of its MSRP in a private party transfer or PPT off some I KNOWS WHAT I GOTS boomer or a cop (cops are exempt from the roster) looking to buy a new truck.

>16 hour class to get a concealed permit

Jesus Christ I'm so glad I left cali about a decade ago, god I pray for Arizona bay.
>>
>>64864564

On that note CAguns.net and CAguns reddit are different, one is okay and the other is fucking reddit. Also to get a Firearms Safety Certificate you need to take a test from an official proctor, your local FFLs should be able to point you to one. Also FFLs can be very picky about the proof of residency for handguns, some won't accept things that are on the DOJ list because they're uptight or corporate stores like Turner's. You will have to fill out a bunch of paperwork (both the ATF 4473 and CA DROS) for any firearm purchase, the CA DOJ DROS system is extremely funky lately and may randomly deny any and all of your firearm transactions forever without you getting an expensive lawyer and taking the DOJ to court because lmao DOJ hates guns and DROS is an unmaintained piece of shit. Don't forget about the roughly $50-100 firearm transfer fee and 21% gun/ammo taxes either.

>Firearms Safety Certificate you need to take a test from an official proctor, your local FFLs should be able to point you to one.
Unless they changed it recently any real gunshop should be able to do the test and make you the card. Maybe if its bigbox that sells guns on the side they cant.
>>
>>64864595

A fair number of the tiny local FFLs stopped doing them because DOJ capped the proctoring fees they can charge, and they don't have enough staff to sell guns AND proctor the test at the same time. This became a problem because people would take the FSC at the little FFL, then immediately run over to Turner's or Sportsman's for the much lower prices, only returning to the small FFL for FSC renewals. It has gotten to the point where a lot of little kitchen-table and office-desk FFLs are saying fuck it just go to Turner's because basically every Turner's has an FSC proctor on staff.
