>>65009069>F-18 engaged (hit?) by missile over IranThe more interesting reason is why it was there instead of a drone. Seems that the iranian claims of 125 shot down MQ-9s and similar turboprop drones as of last week were true. That F-18 would never have been risked otherwise. Apparently at least half of the drones shot down were IAF which is now severely gimping them in their invasion of Lebanon. I think this F-18 got away, he is not trailing smoke and he has two engines, so he likely made it back.
>>65009172>Seems that the iranian claims of 125 shot down MQ-9s and similar turboprop drones as of last week were trueAn F-18 engaging in combat is not evidence of that and to suggest otherwise is a massive leap in logic

So if this is teal why is the F18 flying so low? Shouldn’t they be flying a tad bit higher? Like is there a reason they’d be this low?
>>65009146>Reformers types claiming anything modern was fragile. The argument actual reformers made wasn't fragile as in mechanically unsurvivable, it was fragile as in difficult and expensive to maintain in working order without specialised facilities and lots of maintenance hours.

better angle vid related >>65009069I'm not a pro but that sort of looks like an evasive maneuver to me. it also looks like the projectile might not have detonated properly and gotten destroyed by jet wash or something.>>65009146it definitely flew away from this which is why all of the pro Iran videos cut it off at the moment of the explosion. while it might have been damaged, the notion that it crashed in the Indian ocean seems doubtful and I don't believe it without further evidence. it might have been struck and damaged by the explosion nonethelessmy main takeaway is that this makes the possibility of a heliborne assault or naval landing at Chabahar highly dubious. there's still organized resistance capable of targeting air assets there, and A-10s and helicopters are a lot easier to hit than a Super Hornet
How much TNT is in these SHORADs Iran is using? Like 5 grams?

>>65010214an f-18 is much more evasive than a helicopter or an a-10, the fact that one was running a ground attack mission in the area does not indicate that the air force would be willing to commit much larger amounts of slower craft to operations that are more sensitive than that

>>6501045499% chance it’s a towed decoy. Navy can’t manage a stealth aircraft procurement program to save their lives so they had to max out the looney tunes side of the survivability tech tree instead
>>65009092Little Buddy for the win?
>>65009983That's what APKWS is for.
>>65010461>Navy can't manage stealth aircraft programs The Navy has not been allowed to have is own aircraft designed to it's own specifications since 1970. That was literally the last time they were allowed to have their own clean sheet tailhooker. Fortunately after canceling 15 NAVAIR requests to shovel more money into the usaf acc we got very cost efficient well managed programs such as the B-2, F-22, F-35, and F-47. Hilarious that the branch which has not been allowed to acquire it's own aircraft since literally the Vietnam War is clowning on the usaf right now. BTW the last name in the corporation that builds the B-21 and B-2 is that of a naval aviator so it's not really a navy capability problem it's a cancel all the navy's budget and give it to the usaf problem. The Navy is very capable of developing an aircraft they are just not allowed to due to the usaf's admittedly incredible sloppy slurpy head game with the US Congress.
>>65010474The A-12 was the USAF's fault?
>>65010474ATA was a clusterfuck entirely of the Navy’s own making, where they were warned by Northrop, the stealth company, and Grumman, the carrier aviation company, that what they wanted could not possibly be delivered under the terms of the offered contract. Additionally, they fought tooth and nail for it to be a low level penetration bomber rather than a mid to high level precision bomber, which would have made the A-12 effectively obsolete on service entry even had the designs myriad defects not existed.
>>65010474I'm not sure it's entirely fair to pin the F-35 fully on the USAF, especially considering they wanted the simplest of the three variants along with 99% of the export customers.
>>65010482The A-12 had a vastly smaller cost and time overrun than the B-2, F-35, or F-22. It was canceled by a guy who then ordered all the newly rewinged A-6s to be leapt literally thrown overboard, and our primary high end $230mm fleet defender literally chopped in half. Interestingly all those air frames were manufactured by the same company. Which was the major rival of the company where said man's wife, a journalist with zero aeronautical or engineering experience somehow, for some reason, was immediately gifted a seat on the board of directors after those three aircraft lines were destroyed. It's a big mystery. Very puzzling.
If this videos are true, then the early receiver didnt work, and you dont need radar to have a IR early warnig of an incoming missile. So either the code, mainteinance or final product from lockheed is fucked up.Probably due to jeetshits in any caseI doubt the hardware was delivered wrong so its either the code or mainteinance probably the sewer coding
>>65010491>Additionally, they fought tooth and nail for it to be a low level penetration bomber rather than a mid to high level precision bomber, which would have made the A-12So, the Navy sets clear specs for their flying wing which are technologically challenging and this is bad so it's canceled before delivery money rerouted to the usaf. This is very bad and fiscally irresponsible. The airforce sets one set of requirements for their flying wing, changes their mind after it is built, gets funding to conpletely modify the aircraft for low level attack, at tremendous expense, then literally never uses that capability, because it's retarded. This is wise and very fiscally responsible and a strong argument in favor of their acquisition process. That's a pretty accurate summary of your argument, yes?
>>65010495The A-12 was not a stealth aircraft, and there was no way to make it one without a clean sheet redesign, per both Northrop and Lockheed engineers brought on to consult for the program after McDonnell realized they had not designed a stealth aircraft and attempted to salvage the situation.
>>65010505>The A-12 was not a stealth aircraftEven if you're just retarded and are referring to the Oxcart because the designations are the same that was also for its time LO. The Avenger 2 was ground up VLO and saying otherwise is fucking laughable. I mean a truly ridiculous premise. That was the entire point of the aircraft. Be gone with you nonner, go fluff your security forces NCO in bumfuck North Dakota or whatever you people do. I have no time for fools.
>>65010498To me, the video looks like the towed decoy system successfully defeating a missile. We also just can't really see any maneuvering it's doing because of the shitty footage, or know what the EWs were telling the pilot about the threat and how best to defeat it.
>>65010502They asked for retarded specs at an impossible price point on a fixed price contract, were told by Northrop that a stealth airframe could not be delivered at their desired price, while Grumman had massive reservations about their desired airframe weight vs payload. Enter McDonnell, with at that time no stealth knowledge that isn’t siloed away in ATF, who lowballs their bid assuming they will not have to spend any money on research and will be given Lockheed and Northrop’s IP for free. This does not happen and they spend the next 25 years in a contentious legal battle with the government. They then produce a design with massive cost and weight creep, that is fundamentally not stealthy, and cannot be made stealthy without an effective clean sheet redesign, for a mission set that the JDAM made obsolete before it could have entered service. It is unquestionably the most poorly run stealth program in US military history. ATB, while expensive, at least produced a working product that no foreign nation has so far been able to match. All ATA managed to produce was a two decade lawsuit.
>>65010510McDonnell and later Boeing spent two decades locked in a legal battle with the federal government because they structured their entire bid around the idea that they would be handed the stealth IP of Lockheed and Northrop for free. They had no idea what they were doing. The intakes were not stealthy. The planform was a complete mess and the trailing edge alone guaranteed an atrocious radar return. There is a very good reason that no stealth aircraft, manned or unmanned, resembles even slightly the A-12 Avenger II, and that is because it was not a stealth design but a retarded flying triangle.
>>65010524>The Navy is bad at acquisitions because they request demanding but fixed requirements and a fixed price contract >The airforce is great at acquisitions because they post vague requirements on a cost plus contract, change their mind after the aircraft is being built, then issue 3 more cost plus contracts for the same airplane!Very convincing argument
>>65010531Hmm sounds like you're saying the failure link was... the manufacturers and it had fuck all to do with the Navy which just set the requirements. I'm not sure if you know this but NAVAIR does not actually run any aerospace company. Also the platform is fine, the trailing edge aspect stealth is pretty irrelevant for low level attack which let me check my notes oh wow was literally the mission profile of the design. Fuck off
>>65010531>the trailing edge alone guaranteed an atrocious radar returnNTA but I'm enjoying this (re)discussion of the A-12 because it's the clearest summary I've ever read on /k/so you're saying the straight trailing edge on the flying dorito would have generated greater radar return?is that why the B-2's trailing edges are "jagged" like picrel?
>>65010540It’s all about edge alignment. Notice how each of the trailing edges is aligned to the leading edge of the wing opposite it. It’s one of the fundamental principles of stealth design as it helps control radar scattering. If you don’t have edge alignment you don’t have a stealth aircraft.
>>65010538The Navy was told by the only manufacturer team which had delivered stealth aircraft that what they wanted was impossible at their price point, disregarded it to listen to jackasses who had never designed a stealth aircraft, and ran into exactly the problems they were told they would. The McDonnell team was certainly retarded and out of their depth, but responsibility rests squarely on the Navy’s shoulders because they were told exactly what would happen.
>>65010540So when you're designing for VLO, you have two basic tools at your disposal, absorption and deflection. Absorption is what stuff like your RAM coating does, and sometimes portions of your design with geometry intended to 'trap' the radar and have it bounce around instead of going back.Deflection is where those parallel lines come in, like that sawtooth pattern. Those take the opposite approach, you're actually trying to reflect lots of radar. The thing is you're doing it on your own terms. By focusing it into a super narrow reflection you make it so that most of the time it's not going back to the radar and if one of those 'bright' angles happens to align with one, it'll be so brief that they won't be able to tell it from the usual noise and clutter of operation. This way it's also harder to just point more radars at a search area until you see something. Same reason you try and smooth airframes as much as possible, every break or blemish in the surface is another chance to reflect something. Where you have to for something like a weapons bay, they use the same parallel sawtooth patterns. The engineering, materials science and maths behind VLO planes is incredibly complex but the basic principles are actually pretty simple. You can also probably see how it's possible to apply some of these principles to revisions of 4th gen airframes, like the Super Hornet or the F-15EX. Not as good as true VLO, but any improvement is good.
>>65010532>The Navy is bad at acquisitions because they request demanding but fixed requirements and a fixed price contractI'm fucking dying, my sides are triggering AEGIS returns from how far gone they are. Also, yes, putting a contract out for a a billion dollar plane with a million dollar budget, and then sticking with that when the reputable companies in the industry tell you that you're retarded, is basically asking to get scammed. AF procurement has it's own issues, to the point the SF got made so they couldn't keep raiding the rocket budget to buy planes, but acting as though the USN doesn't have it's own issues, most notably a refusal to tell Congress off for being fucking retards when they demand pointless but expensive capabilities, is disingenuous at best.
>>65010547>>65010560I see, thanksI've seen pictures of the A-12 and I vaguely know about sawtooth and the reason for it, having seen photos of the bomb bays on B-2, F-35 etc but never applied this to the trailing edge of the A-12just goes to show how noobs can look at a diagram and just fail to grok it
