I really liked Tolkien and I liked grrm but I’m a little burnt out on fantasy. I’m all about sci-fi these days.
>>
>>35510089
i grew up liking tolkien alot and i respect him as the essential forefather of the modern fantasy genre. like i am one of those people who can quote every single line of the lotr trilogy lol.

however as i have matured i have come to realize that his writing especially when it comes to his villains are lazy and uninspired at best and at worst straight up racist (see evil people just being ppl on eliphants from india and the middle east). theres really just too much newer fantasy media that promotes more interesting and relatable viewpoints for me to really consider tolkien's pre internet early 1900's ass writing great anymore

I love them both! Read all of ASOIAF, watched the whole series. I can recite the entire film trilogy verbatim but weirdly I only ever read The Hobbit.

>his writing especially when it comes to his villains are lazy and uninspired at best
I like each of their works for different reasons. I feel that Tolkien's greatest strength was nuanced, poetic worldbuilding and weaving the timeless values and themes of his faith into the story. Granted, his world is intentionally very black and white, which tends to make for arguably more shallow characters, and one dimensional villains. For Tolkien, evil tends to originate from inherent vice rather than external influence or circumstance, and so requires little extrapolation.

GRRM is the modern, morally grey answer to Tolkien's legacy that moves away from ideals and closer to reality. Because of that, his characters are darker, more human and "relatable", especially for contemporary readers. They constantly grapple with their own determinations of morality. He has really deep and complex plotting but I think his greatest strength is character study and dialogue. He describes it himself, what lies at the core of all his writing: "the human heart in conflict with itself".

neither because i have aphantasia
>>
I was always fascinated by mythos of a bygone era and tolkien really captures that birds eye view of the world in some of his books and that feeling of the story being some n-th retelling of the real events. As for the fat piece of shit he will never finish the books because he's heard the phrase Chekhov's gun and decided to do the exact opposite on the scale of a book, 'end' being an important part sort of discredits him in my eye
>>
GRRM. I connected really strongly to Brienne of Tarth, nothing in Tolkien ever spoke to me on that level. The manichean good vs evil thing, light vs darkness is so heavy in LOTR and the characters are just kinda one dimensional to me. Yeah he's never gonna finish the books but that's fine, the first four are all you really need.

The chad Terry Pratchett obviously
Get some Ursula up in there for good coverage.
>>
>>35510089
pratchett
lotr is even in my top 5, but i still think pratchett was a better prose writer than tolkien

i'm hsts and only like tolkien of those 2 so this is real
>>
>>35510089
Grrm is a poonchaser prove me wrong
>>
>>35510998
yeah i would say i agree with all of that. grrm's is indeed much more grounded and less LIGHT VS DARKNESS in its nature which leads for a more interesting narrative as you and other users in this thread have so elegantly stated. it is a shame tho that he just wont wrap up game of thrones properly ever lol
>>
>>35515914
hes a poonchaser but only for pre-transition pooners
>>
>>35515856
What do you mean by that
>>
>>35516098
That's the appeal of tolkien to me, it's mythos and world not stories. I don't need to read about the graininess of varys' shit for me to enjoy a world. We humans need to be goofy or naive or else we would go all insane.

Weis and Hickman.
