If you said something like "they love children," that would have been gendered in the past, but is now gender neutral.

well i think the thing is gender qua category isnt necessarily the linchpin. the implication line reading books -> feminine -> not masculine -> weak will simply become reading books -> weak. gender is often simply a conduit, not its own phenomenon.
