We'd have the next great American novel if Gen Z would stop ERPing and actually write something normal for a change.
>>23313105Why beat around the bush with intellectual masturbation when you can go for the source with actual masturbation?
>>23313105The oldest genzers are around 28. That being said, nothing worthwhile after genx will be made, just look at millennials' slow decline without nothing to show for it.If you were born after 82, you aren't fully human.

>>23313105The next great American novel is going to be a collection of ERPs.
everything good has already been writtenit is the age of hedonism
People younger than ~25 can barely write a grammatical sentence, let alone a full length novel. The novel as a form of art is going to be dead for a while I'm afraid. Enjoy the proliferation of YA "romantasy" targeted at teenage girls; those are the only people reading and writing amongst the younger people.t. 33 year old university instructor
>>23313185Why is it always teachers who so flagrantly criticize the people they're supposed to be turning into intellectuals? Look, I get it, phonics aren't taught anymore and holistic methods fucked up everything, but you could at least go a week without criticizing your pupils for growing up to see like five different shifts in the media landscape.
>>23313215>criticizingnta but it is simply an observationalso a teacher is there to teach, not to build up a person from ground up, especially not possible if the pupil isn't interested in thathow could they be interested, they attend education as it is mandatory; even if high-education isn't 'mandatory' technically
>>23313215Not exactly blaming them. Just venting some frustrations and pointing out deficiencies. I should NOT have to teach college students about punctuation they were supposed to learn and internalize as children.
>>23313220punctuation? wdym, like they don't put commas and shit?hard to imagine someone being so incapable, as these are beyond basic things
>>23313228I have received essays with almost zero punctuation on multiple occasions. Messing up comma splices is one thing (that I will ignore), but I have students that just straight up end sentences without periods.
>>23313238And the ethnicity of those students?
>>23313215Who else would you expect it to be? Teachers have the first hand experience so of course they will be the first to talk about it. They're only telling you about it because they're worried and you should be too.
>>23313238>these people vote>you in your life will deal with these type of mongrels multiple times in the leastthis is just pure grief inducing
>>23313243>le epic /pol/ postIt cuts across every ethnicity. Honestly, white sorority girls are the worst. They do not give a single fuck about anything.
>>23313255i assume this is USA and university students are forced to take english classes as general requirements?or is this even true for people being english majors or tangents?
>>23313269Yeah, USA at a Big 10 research university. I'm not terribly certain what the specific gen. ed. requirements are, but I do know that the students are required to take several different humanities courses no matter what their major is. I'm able to see what my students' majors are on my roster and usually the English majors are better than the others. The university has a big pre-med program and med school, so the majority seem to be focused on that.
>>23313238I once turned in an essay like that. I hadn't written anything with essay guidelines in over 2 years and I genuinely forgot to put periods in some places. I still have no idea what went through my mind at that time. For the record, I breezed through writing exams in high school and did as well after that travesty of an essay once I had more practice.
>>23313185What do you even teach anon? I study in the Netherlands and we have to be proficient in the language otherwise you can't resume your studies. The only people I ever met who didn't pass the dutch language test were immigrants but I can't blame them (despite being an immigrant myself).
>>23313120I think it’s possible for the internet generations to write something great, but it’s going to take time. People don’t seem to appreciate that the tradition has been destroyed, the inheritance squandered, and the chain broken. It’s going to take time to recover that.
>>23313185I don’t see why more young men, probably more in 30s than 20s, don’t write exactly that, YA fantasy for young women. If it pays the bills, is it really any worse than being a university instructor or whatever else people are doing?
>>23313303>fantasy for your adultthis is just a tamer version of an artist choosing to draw naked furry shit for the moneyit just makes you cringe at yourself, at least if you are self-aware enough; but I guess you could just use a pen-name
>>23313290I’m also at a Big 10 school and I have a hard time believing you’re being fair. The large majority of the students I see know punctuation and there are clear ethnic divides.
the high-school system in theory is great; it forces kids to read decent quality novels and analyze them and read under the lines properlyin practice the kids don't care, nor does the teacher, neither is the teacher capable of delivering the novel in a way that brings on interest and dives in properly to the underlying themes literacy would simply be 100% if it could be applied properly, where people would also be smarter and better at self-introspection and analysis which is useful in life in general
>>23313293In America, only non-citizens have to take an English test to enter university and the bar is not all that high. Everyone has to write an essay for admission, but universities regularly lower the bar for non-white citizens especially. This country is basically a giant affirmative action campaign, if we’re being totally honest. The bar is quite high for white and Asian students, while everyone else can attend respectable colleges with poor grades and remedial literacy. This is the truth. There is a problem with white and Asian students as well though, namely, the fact that they just don’t care. And they shouldn’t.
>>23313305I disagree. Becoming a furry artist is far more extreme. The thing about prose fiction that’s unique is even in the more childish or pornographic genres, there can be standouts. Nothing is really stopping you from being someone who writes YA fantasy for women, but in a way that many men can also appreciate. Hell, half this board makes constant apology for why their favorite manga is actually a literary masterpiece. You can do that in fiction. Meanwhile, there are no Tolkiens or GRRMs of furry porn.
Is ERPing that big with Gen Z? I made a new zoomer friend recently and we have extremely literary ERPs with lots of wordplay but I didn't know it was that common.
what is ERPing?
>>23313293uit mijn land zwartnek
>>23313105Personally I feel that the modern life has nothing interesting to write of, and anachronistic novels are rarely praised. I'll make a extreme overgeneralization by saying most authors are praised for a story they make that is either contemporary or about something they know from experience. Consider what makes Moby Dick so historically praised. All the WHALE FACTS are from someone who knows about what he talks about. Melville himself sailed several times the way Ishmael did, (though I do not know if he ever went to a whaling trip)Back then you could be 16 and join the Grand Armeé to Russia, and die of frostbite over there. Life was in general less protective about itself. Nowadays, at least in theory, society is more protective of the youth and "sanitized". Everything is standard and the same everywhere. This is further reinforced with the internet which connects the world into a sense of "homogeneity" and that there's nothing special in the world. At least that's what I think as a Zoomer myselfIf I wanted to write fiction I might as well do military fanfiction in Royal Road or AO3 or something like that.
>>23313105Farts noises the great american novel
>>23313338Erotic RolePlay>>23313332It's because it's the only way zoomers are "getting laid" at all.
>>23313357Why do you think that fiction must necessarily be about modern life?
Theres no point in writing though. All the good stuffs already been wrote. I just dont see the point. Im a Gen Zer. what the fuck am I meant to look forward to or write about? Or be inspired by. Im an American. I grew up in a soulless city where nobody goes outside. if I travel the country all I find are more soulless cities where nobody goes outside. Except for NYC, which is approaching third world levels yet is still too expensive to live in.Rural life doesnt exist here either as much as 4chan likes to pretend it does. The rural communities of America are nothing like anywhere on earth. Nobody is outside, nobody talks to eachother. Everything is too far away to even bother trying to get to.Im Gen Z. Im not smart. Im not creative. Im not a hard worker. I cant do anything and Im already old as far as cultivating talent goes. Even if I decide today to be the next Herman Melville. Theres nothing I can do to even approach that. And if I did somehow achieve that, nobody would care. My book would be given some gaudy shitty cover and it would circle the drain in thrift stores. Go to a thrift store book section right now. Look at those authors. Go to wal mart and look at those authors. Those people are the aspirants and the ones who worked hard to learn to write despite it being dead. And after all their work that SHIT is the best they can put out.Its fundamentally hopeless. Generation Z is the lost generation. Its irrecoverable, especially if you're American. The absolute best we can do is cultivate libraries and learn to be teachers so that the generations after us can start rebuilding.
>>23313383Ironic doomerism isn't chic anymore, just saying.
>>23313396Im just writing what I think I dont subscribe to any internet jokes. The propensity to always ascribe something to some internet thing is part of why Generation Z is lost.
>>23313373It does
>>23313373Because most books are from inspired from either of followingPersonal experiences, which the author decides to take inspiration from to invent a story. Some examples of writers who took from their own lives are Melville and Moby Dick, Joseph Conrad, all of Hemingway, Experiences of others, whom the author heard and got inspired. Melville also is here as he surely got inspired by the Essex. Joyce's Dubliners most likely is also composed in a similar fashion. Kafka's work as a government official probably mindbroke him and turned him into a writer of the bureaucratic absurd. It is well known Conan Doyle was inspired by several individuals he knew to write SherlockA subject one has researched much overWar and Peace comes to mind as despite not being a direct experience, Tolstoy studied enough to write a convincing epic. Cervantes knew enough of chivalric novels to the point he decided to satirize them brutally Why can't zoomers write about either of these?>Personal experiencesMost of their lives has been spent in either school or social media in the off time. No kid goes to play into an abandoned island like Tom Sawyer>Experiences of othersZoomers usually stay with other fellow zoomers, don't try to socialize outside their age range and thus share the same experiences as with anyone else. >A subject one has researched much overIf you do this you are called autistic and shunned for not being normal. All hobbies are superficial now, there is no sincerity in anythingNow that I mention it, it may be the lack or sincerity or passion in general as well
>>23313105unironically the future of literature lies within the hands of the autistic hyperboreans, the Pynchons of this generation currently shitposting on this very board
AHM WERKIN ON IT!!!!
>>23313446Sometimes fiction is pure fantasy. There have been great writers that have not only been total shut-ins, but total normies as well.
>>23313492Notice that OP talked about the NEXT GREAT AMERICAN NOVELNot the next fantasy novel which is usually considered only slightly better than YAI don't know how many zoomers write YA, but Shirley there must be a few
>>23313105I'm 97' and I'm finishing Gen Z equivalent of Death on Credit.
I wish I could write....
This is unbearable. I'm doing a short novella, because possibly the single most important factor in writing, or human communications in general is being concise. But all I'm good at writing is filler bullshit! I really need to turn my generated ideas into subjects that are actually important. But it'd be pretentious of me to claim that the way a billboard looks to a character has some deep philosophical meaning, and I don't know where the line is between foreshadowing that's too vague or too obvious. Fuck me! This is impossible! I'm going to delete the whole damn thing and start over from scratch;
>>23313105>>23313165>>23313305>>23313321> Meanwhile, there are no Tolkiens or GRRMs of furry porn.I am that man. You'll see. We are living in the age of all philosophy and religion reduced to the lizard brain, and what's needed is a brutal campaign of raw sublimation.Rather, finding that which sex is a shadow of and breaking the bonds of psychologism (the slave religion of half-masked despir). I will travel with my beautiful madmen, we indestructible roaches of these latter days. We'll journey beyond that great gulf together, between our lying self-gratification and the Root of all power
>>23315877Despair*. Is it over bros? My literary career gone so soon over a typo
>>23313105No. Do what's fun then die.
>>23313300>the tradition has been destroyed, the inheritance squandered, and the chain broken. It’s going to take time to recover that.I have this feeling that everything between the 90s and 10s was some sort of cultural reset and that a new type of world emerged after that. It seemed more like a sterile transitory period than anything else.
>>23316391Well, yeah it did. Life gradually started to take place mainly online. When you talk to people, you get the sense that they literally experience their life through a screen. Out there on the internet is their real thoughts, their real interests, their real hobbies, and the real world is something they have to go to every now and then where they only talk about what they saw or did on the internet. Digital and internet technologies have done a real number to waking real life. It’s made it a lot like death, or sleep.
>>23313515There’s no good reason why a fantasy novel, even a YA fantasy novel, can’t be the next Great American Novel. If that’s not possible for some reason, well, maybe The Great American Novel was always FORCED PROPAGANDA, you dumb ass.
>>23313217>it's not my job to fix itThis sort of attitude is what makes places like China such a shithole
>>23313105The moment in history we're in can only have two things happen to make another great American novel. Either someone makes a truly great, straightforward story, so good, that no debate is necessary for it being part of the Great American novel canon. Which, in turn, can hopefully set waves in the medium into a cultural reset that can go forward instead of being held back. The other option that I've been focusing on for my own writing is where to go after post-modernism? If this problem can be solved, then writers will follow suit. Adding vigor to the medium in not just America but the entire world. I'm like half sure I understand what can come next.Right now, its only a matter of time until someone else comes to their own equally correct conclusion, or someone has a similar idea like me.
