Why are Japanese books so depressing?

The Japanese like non-endings that are heavy with a sense of loss. Endings where the character's inner journey terminates before you think the plot would. I think of them as like standing a river, it keeps on moving with or without you.I think its the Buddhist thing, the world just keeps moving and whats gone is gone, where as the Western/Christian mindset is predicated on the belief that one day everything that ever was will be judged and accounted for.
