Elephant anon here,

I was at the donation store and found an old looking bookcase that had the original key.

I took it home for free and did more inspection and cleaned it up.

Turned out it is a Berkey & Gay glass fronted barrister mahogany bookcase (1895-1930) based on the maker's plate on the inside.

It cleaned up really nice and there's still more restoration to do.

What did /lit/ find this week?

Also, I came into possession the most rare book I have ever owned this week, and would share it with /lit/ but there are those who do not want me to take photos of it for the public because virtually none exist, nor do they want me to tell about it. I am still thinking about whether I would share it with you guys. I really like you guys so maybe I will!

Pretty, but now tell us the most important thing: how does is smell?
>>
>>23325787
I'd like to see it. Maybe dump it in an out of the way thread. Though based off the stuff you've posted in the past I do have to wonder what's so special about this one. Tolkien annotated LOTR? Something else?

I will share photos of it.
Only 3 extant copies exist, 1 of them being owned by the Boston Library. Only sold twice in the last 50 years.

that would be a horrible thing to do. also, the person who sold it to me did not understand its true value (and neither did the person he bought it from). I won't elaborate. anyway I share these photos because I like you guys.

that's all for now. maybe one day I will take photos with a real camera, but since this is 114 years old, I don't want to touch it much.

How did he come into it? How did you recognize it?

I am friends with some of the oldest book dealers or acquaintance with them in the business. I know the secrets too.
He bought it from Forum Auctions last year (open auction) for just $1500. They had valued it at just $300.

I'll say this... a lesser copy of this book (I won't explain this part) sold for $7500, in 2006.
>>
And before I go to bed, I bought it from him for $4000. He had it listed for $5000 on abebooks.

Like I said. I will take real photos of the book in the future to share with you guys. night

Collecting old books sounds cool, but in actuality is sadly extremely gay. Congratulations with your find.

You’re not the Dunsay autist from the forums are you? If not he’s going to have a fit because he doesn’t own this.

Very nice. I miss how old books like this were made, with the gorgeous illustrations and typeset. A lost era.

Lord Dunsany's autobiography (1938)
Patches of Sunlight (proof copy)
Also a fine American edition in fine pictorial dust jacket.

The Dust Jacket will go on my inscribed presentation copy to actress and writer Nancy Price (who Dunsany wrote several forewords to)

Dunsany had a funny sense of humor...

ok? I'm OP and I have been posting about books for two days. I think the janitorial staff disagrees with you.

OK. I have been sharing my books on here for over two years. Some people like them and some people jeer at me. I don't really care because I do it for the few people that like it.

That typeface looks nice. Does anyone know the name?
>>
>>23329172
It was bound by William Northend when he was an apprentice printer. William Northend later became a master printer, and there is a company still named after him today.

Apologies. Sometimes I'm autistically bothered by threads with no relation with literature such as e-reader or tech threads.
