>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>>
you ever notice how in most KR game isekai wns the MC has to deal with patience killing plots, serpentine schemers, uncaring or actively malicious parents, etc. and does nothing about them because he is driven by his autistic drive to achieve the “perfect run”?

oftentimes this involves the MC getting inserted as either a third rate villain or the number 1 trash of said game within the conceit of the WN.

if this were a Chinese WN the MC would’ve become a parricide/set his own family up, including the children and infants, to be eaten alive by a bunch of monsters then moved on to obtain a harem. maybe the appeal of CN WNs might be found in the mass murder the MC usually gets up to.
>>
The more I look into this the more unfeasible it seems. A RR story needs hundreds of chapters and millions of words, but the most I’d even written is 70 chapters before being completely deflated and don’t want to continue.
I suppose I could stretch what would normally be one chapter into five by not editing down ever, but I’d still need a premise that could keep going indefinitely. So far my ideas are… eh.

A disillusioned superhero’s sidekick has left his old life behind. But his dream of living a normal life is shattered after he accidentally saves a super-villainess’s life. Now he must contend with her constant attempts to recruit him into her doomsday cult. At the same time, news of his old partner’s disappearance threatens to drag him back into the world of capes and spandex. But unlike before, he is now a full-grown man—and superpowered women who parade around half-naked aren’t exactly known for their chastity.

After a century of secluded cultivation, a man emerges into a martial world twisted beyond recognition. Corrupted Yang burns male cultivators from the inside out and transforms female cultivators into hulking beasts that are slaves to their base desires. What happened, and how is he the only man left untouched by this madness? Before he can find the answers, he must first survive his once-cute Junior Sister and his once-serene Master, who now look at him with a predatory glint in their eyes.

Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. After Earth died, humanity fractured along its oldest fault line: sex. Men claimed New Mars, a red world forged in blood and ingenuity. While women disappeared into New Venus, a planet shrouded in fog and mystery. For three hundred years, men lived in a paradise of reason, simulated warfare, and android waifus. But when an SOS comes from across the stars, a scout unit must venture to the planet of the women, where three powerful psionic Witch Queens compete for supremacy and their gene-spliced Amazonian armies oppress the people under their sandaled feet.

>I’m not reading that wall of text.

NTA but Tolkien and the Bible aren't single works. A reminder that the bible is an anthology of many books. But yes 80% of Tolkien's works and 80% of the bible are trash. For Tolkien's case even if you say the published works aren't trash, he didn't publish every work he created.

No. Tolkien is a fine author and the vast majority of his works ranges from good to fine.

>80% of Stephen King's works are trash
Vast majority of them are just alright. Nothing amazing, but he's popular for a reason.

>80% of JK Rowling's works are trash
Fine child fiction. Harry potter dominates globally for a reason, though.

>80% of GRR Martin's works are trash
Good to fine. Asoiaf is built off a repertoire of "fine works."

NTA but this still doesn't disagree with the idea that 80% of all works are trash.

Time Loops and Restarts are opposite premises. The first is about an MC that gradually becomes OP due to countless failures. The other is give a reason why the MC is OP right from the start and any story tension comes from the butterfly effect of all the changes they make. None of them will fuck with your mind, what makes any of those series good is their execution.
>>
>>24710452
>this still doesn't disagree with the idea that 80% of all works are trash.
I agree that 80% of all published works are trash, lol.

I just find it unbelievable how some people are bending over backwards to justify some retard not understanding 80% of all works overall are trash and thinking the stat applied per author.
>>
>>24710312
The appeal of CN WNs comes from the protagonist bring proactive and the villains getting their come-uppance. That's it.

It might seem trivial, but most other stories I've read don't do that. The payoffs are meager, skipped over or even taken away from the MC.

Most webnovels are wish-fulfillment fantasies. Since I’m not autistic enough to care about magic systems or stats (may it be lit or vidya), I figure a guy going around collecting harem members like pokemons should be good enough. One girl, one arc.
>Boy enters a new map
>Boy meets girl
>Girl is a stuck-up bitch trapped in a bad situation
>Boy saves girl before riding off into the sunset
>Girl falls in love and chases after boy
>Rinse and repeat while dangling the promise of romance over the reader’s nose for five hundred chapters, xianxia style.
It should work… Now, if only I could pin down the premise…

I wanted to write a simple Isekai story as my first one. MC gets into a new world, goes into dungeons, romances some women. Simple. But it kept getting more complex as I thought of plot and how to hook a reader.

Now I'm thinking of pausing that and writing a VRMMO story instead. The hook is obviously just the VRMMO. Maybe the players are stuck in the game or whatever, but it's simple! Get quests, kill monsters, level up, go into dungeons, level up some more.

Is this a bad idea?

I have like 20,000 hours spent on playing MMOs so I'll at least know what they're like.
>>
>>24710964
>Is this a bad idea?
I'd ask you what do you think you have to add to this genre that the 9 billion other authors before you haven't already done. Well, unlike most of the authors of the genre, I've actually played MMOs.

I've read a few VRMMO stories before, but I've never actually found one with a pure mage MC where the VRMMO worked like an actual game. There are never any skill builds involved or monster AI abuse or playing the market or many of the other things that are a staple in actual MMOs.

Ironically the strongest MMO feel I've got was from a smut novel.

But surely after all this time there has to be some well-executed story with a twist of involving the Reader in some metaplotfuckery. Although admittedly at this point the type of stories I am looking for spoil themselves if I know something similar may happen. It's like a genre shift not even specific to literature; I find the idea fascinating but knowing about it beforehand is obviously a spoiler.
Nobody cares so I will blog about ever17 for those unfamiliar: it was a visual novel from Japan around the early 2000s and involves four character routes (where you spend a lot of time with and get to know a specific character) then a final True route/ending. There exists a concept known as a "multi-route mystery" which essentially explains itself where decisions you make lead down different paths, and ever17 involves an accident at an underground water park through the viewpoint of a male student. One of the big twists is that although it appears the four main routes take place during the same time, there is actually a wait for it 17 year difference between half of the four main routes (so two take place during 20xx and the other two take place during 20yy).
Another big twist is that during the final route, your viewpoint is somebody completely new but the most bricks-shitting reveal pertains to the overall main plot in which the characters are repeating the events of the accident in the future in order to summon an nth dimensional entity to observe a different outcome and save everybody. And guess who that entity is? YOU
I don't dabble much in timeloop/restart/etc -lit but I always compare it to these. If you know you know. Even among normal scifi/fant lit I haven't found really anything like it.
>>
>>24711108
>because nobody fucking reads them.
Yeah, but nobody would read my first story anyway, so nothing would change.
>>
>>24711126
Not a webnovel.
>>
>>24711150
Ever17 isn't somehow unique there, almost all visual novels involve a big twist of some sort. You could even say it's part of the medium. But many of them rely on interactivity, which is obviously missing from web novels. For most amateur authors, just writing a coherent storyline where A is followed by B and logically concludes in C is too much asked.
>>
>>24711150
Unfortunately most WN authors are zoomers, so you'll be hard pressed to find something as good and mind-fucky as Higurashi or Blazblue.
>>
>>24711174
what's mind-fucky about blazblue? isn't that just some fighting game?
>>
>>24711174
> Higurashi
Great example. afaik there is nothing like that in the wn genre. I'm not good enough to write it but I'd certainly read it
>>
>>24711174
Most WN authors will never do it because of reader expectations.
>>
>>24711186
blazblue's creator didn't want to make a fighting game so the story is actually wild and pretty nonsensical at first glance. He just ended up working at his friend's company which happened to be a FG company and his friend(creator of guilty gear) suggested using his setting and characters as a basis for an FG since gear was in legal hell for a time. The story sections of latter blazblue games are basically just VNs.
>>
>>24711186
BB's first game is a giant timeloop, with each character's storymode being an iteration. It always ended with the protagonist and the antagonist time traveling to the past, merge into a giant beast whose appearance and defeat set up most of the game's settings and each character's background. The timeloop is eventually broken but it also unsealed the series' main antagonist.
And the underlying reason for the timeloops is a lot of sibling ties bullshit, carrying over across layers of cloning.

Irrelevant, almost all RR cover have AI covers.
I haven't read it, but edited AI writing is almost certainly better than the average RR novel. It hits the LitRPG and Isekai mains, plus the smaller-but-still-relevant War and Military tag, so there's your audience.
It also did the release plan (38 chapter in 44 days), and I suppose the author brought ads and/or shoutout swaps.
If you think about it, the only thing that sets it apart is that it's AI-assisted. Grim but not unforeseen,

I don't want to post my works on a site that accepts anything but sincere human thought. Why do we even write? To communicate experiences to each other, right? Let’s try some isekai premises this time. I’ll even throw in one with stats.

The New Life Project is a program where people can upload their consciousness into a digital world tailored to their every preference. The catch? A portion of their memory is erased, leaving them blissfully unaware that it’s all a simulation. Want to spend eternity in heaven? Done. Want to be isekai’d into a fantasy realm and surrounded by a harem of monster girls? That can be arranged.
The program is especially popular among the elderly, the bedridden, the suicidal, and those simply looking for a fresh start.
Of course, there’s also the Dream Life Project, where users remain fully aware it’s all fake. But that version is far less popular. Why live a dream when you can live a lie that feels real?
A cybersecurity specialist working for the company behind New Life has the unenviable duty of diving into different clients’ simulations to root out anomalies the old-fashioned way—by killing them. But when several New Life users start dying in their pods, he begins to suspect something far more sinister than a glitch: murder. A serial killer may be on the loose inside the digital multiverse, and he’s the only one who can stop them.

A man is sent back in time to fix his mistakes… but in a different body.
In his first life, he awakened the magical powers within him and went full chuunibyou. He made choices he would come to regret: founding a secret organization, amassing an unwilling harem, and slaughtering innocent people who stood in his way. In the end, he angered a god who obliterated his body and enslaved his soul.
After eons as the god’s unwilling errand boy, he’s offered a second chance to return to the past and undo his mistakes. But his soul has changed so much over the millennia that his younger body rejects him, forcing him to inhabit the body of the first man he ever killed—his old bully.
Now, back in the past and trapped in a frail shell, he faces an impossible task: stopping his younger, stronger, and far more unhinged self from destroying the world.

In a world where people can level up and increase their attributes, one man discovers a peculiar gift: the ability to respec his stats at will. The catch? He can’t level up at all and only has 20 attribute points total. Just enough to max out a single stat out of six.
He could pour everything into STR and crush diamonds in his palm… but that would leave him a drooling moron with zero stamina. Or he could go all in on INT, but that would mean sacrificing everything else. Even if he spread the points evenly, he’d still be weaker than a ten-year-old.
So far, he manages to survive by the skin of his teeth, using the art of quick respec to adapt on the fly. But when he discovers he can also respec the attributes of his party members, a new path opens before him—the chance to assemble the strongest party in the world and challenge the gods themselves.

I need help brainstorming ideas for Body Cultivation in my setting, i don't want separate it into general levels like "Iron Body" or "Golden Body" and so on because its too impersonal and doesn't allow for the same customization than regular cultivation in my setting does
Im also wary of just restricting it to just a per "Manual" issue, where one Cultivation Manual decides everything for the same reason, i'll still have them, but i feel it breaks the fantasy of having custom-made superpowers to have it all solved by the story

I took some inspiration on what this anon recommended >>24707126
Instead of just organs i decided to make it the full body and divided the individual stages like this:
>Flesh (skin & muscles)
>Tendons & Ligaments
>Bones & Marrow
>Blood
>Organs
>The Nerve System
I might order it in some other way, im not sure yet
But the gist of it is at every stage the cultivator uses elixirs, pills and other mystical herbs and fruits and trains to infuse their effects in their bodies, after they absorbed everything they can (and their lower dantian is full) try for a breakthrough, if the newest augment doesn't mesh well with the others they will fail, if not, the body undergoes an "Evolution", the body completely assimilates the augment and the rest of the body will also be strengthened to accommodate it

Every augment is basically either a Passive Skill (Like a +20% to Strength permanently) or an Active skill the user trained and adapted his body for (Something like +200% Strength Temporarily)
It can be more than one per stage but it usually has some harsh diminished returns after the first, maybe 2 if the Manual is very advanced, the other skills in the stage also suffers for it
The augments' skills can also combined to form a greater whole (A +10% strength in one part with 10% in another might have a +5% effect on each) or combine more than one to form a skill outside the limit (Something like combining 3 active skills to make an "Ultimate Skill")
Each augment becomes "Fixed" after a breakthrough, they can't be changed, but they can be strengthened again (although, this is optional and not needed for a new breakthrough)

That's what i got so far, i need opinions, i need ideas for active skills besides "The body becomes really hard" and "The user gains a lot of strength temporarily"
>>

>just a month after I... began my shut-in life, I was a fresh recluse.

>my emotions were a rollercoaster / twisted personality
Sounds like an AI joke and it doesnt track. How does whining give you a "twisted" personality?

The voice is very dry, but not in a witty way. And the prose is nonexistant because it's just monologuing. It goes on and on and on. When does the story start? I could not finish this.
>>
>>24712081
So what's the conflict in your story? Who's the main character?
>>
>>24712081
I think a power system that's this "hard" (Ie well-defined) is only necessary if you're planning to use it for specific narrative problem-solving
if it's just for characterisation and flavour, a softer system is fine
>>
>>24712090
>just write a good story
>>24712122
>So what's the conflict in your story? Who's the main character?
Patreon paying readers don't want a "Good story", they love a power fantasy, and a power system is absolutely necessary, it needs to accommodate for awesome and flashy powers in a logical but colorful way that let the readers mind wonder what can be done with it
Slop readers hate "mystery gobbledygook" power progression, they want underdogs gaming the system and coming out on top, this shit is WAY more important that you give it credit for and you're wrong for dismissing it
>>24712128
Yeah thanks
>>
>>24712157
>Slop readers hate "mystery gobbledygook" power progression, they want underdogs gaming the system and coming out on top, this shit is WAY more important that you give it credit for and you're wrong for dismissing it
you're describing a specific (somewhat common) type of slop reader and so you aren't wrong, but you are definitely ignoring that a lot of readers don't actually care about this either and several "soft magic system" stories have done great recently and historically
if you're writing something a la Primal Hunter you have a point, but the seas of slop are wide and varied. power system autists are a large community, maybe even the biggest, but far from the only

I think the people who are best at writing extremely granular, hard power systems are themselves already serious fans of that approach and have no problems concocting them. The ideas are the cheap part, after all.
I may be misunderstanding your original post (>>24712081) but you asking for more ideas isn't very promising. What you've shared so far isn't very well explained either and seems quite convoluted even when I give it the benefit of the doubt. Which systems have you enjoyed/felt inspired by?

why would you need to brainstorm body cultivation when its a well understood science ?
>>
>>24712157
>underdogs gaming the system and coming out on top
>readers mind wonder what can be done with it
again, that's if the story you have planned relies on the power system for narrative problem-solving. that may be true but the system you've described so far doesn't corroborate that. maybe you want them to be problem-solving tools to justify their complexity but the boons and maluses just sound like additional flavour rather than problem-solving tools.

Because actual scientific bodybuilding would end up being only the backbone.

Body Cultivation is about two things:
a) Body remoulding to surpass the limits of even a "perfect" human (I've read some scientifically-minded xianxia where this was literal, like doing vein and nerve cable management and redesigning joints and muscles, in others it's more mystical, and all inbetween)
b) Squatting every day ten thousand times until the clap of your asscheeks can propel you through time (I hate to use this example but Might Guy from naruto)

I think I am liking the idea of just re-adapting the events of Yellow Typhoon but from Lawrence's perspective for the first chapters of A Game of Cosmic Titans. Originally as it stands right now its just ch7 but from his perspective, so I think it'd lend some agency since the first chapter draft just isn't cutting it. >Anyone have any guides on writing fight scenes?
you don;t have to be good at fighting, shooting, etc. But if you can do those things as a hobby fro fun even a little bit over a long period of time you bring a ring of authenticity. Example.
Tying to raise tension, its common enough a trope to have the MC cock their handgun. "He cocked his gun" isn't shit. So i sat there one might and my MC had to cock his hog leg revolver. I took y own out, and I cocked it and re-cocked it many times. That "click!" was really a series of stronger and weaker clicks, coming in at their own times. Done very slow, I separated them out. I got my disassembly manual out and saw what mechanisms were producing each click. Then several sentences describing the volume of each click and a brief of what function was happening. The cylinder turning. The locking gate engaging. The sear engaging the levered trigger release.
>
"My trigger had far less reach than a stock one. Trigger travel under about half of normal is considered a "good" trigger. MIne was a half, but now I file diamond stoned it further, down to a third or so. Not quite a full competition race trigger. What a laymen refers to as a hair trigger. Yet its damn close. This is where I get my double tap from, lightning fast. It never fails to impress. My full house reloads jump a little more from the heavy for caliber projectiles. The extra recoil jump, the almost hair trigger burps a second shot out. Am I cheating? In a word, yes. First one goes here I want. The second goes off almost indistinguishable fro the first about an inch away, at two to three o'clock.
>
I can drop these little doctoral dissertations in. (gun-fu, anyone) all novel long. How he carries. What he carries. What a quick draw is, what it isn't. No end to it. Now that I was a *great* fighter, but I did it for a workout for years. I can do the same "doctoral dissertations" on that as well.
>
Example.
>
I had asked for a sample.

"We'll play a game. Do a super slow motion cowboy punch. Aim for my nose, but so slow its pure comedy."

He touched the tip of his nose to indicate as he stance-d up. A curious slight crouch to him. I reared back to show off my best and funniest cowboy punch.

"Freeze!"

I was hauled back. He placed nothing save his index finger on my shoulder and shoved. I moved.

"You're seriously off balance when you draw back. Do it again."

He let me slide now for my balance when I was hauling off. He let my slow fist start and he placed his palm on my shoulder. He fisted my shirt and yanked in a tight smooth draw.

"Again, seriously off balance, when you come in. Off balance to start. Off balance to finish. You're only balanced, on accident? For a brief moment in the middle. Now. Do i again. A little faster."

Now punching faster, he reacted a lot quicker. He pulled my one shoulder, and shoved the other. He was grinning.

"Bring the speed up."

No matter which hand It felt like I was being simultaneously pulled and pushed.
>>
>>24712558

>>24712567

Then he started stepping on my foot. In time and out of time with the shoulder pulls and pushes. The feeling of being jostled felt like a twig swing in a gale force wind. When he suddenly shot his forearm in and tapped my throat light, It was obvious he checked it.

"Stop. I get you used to pulling for my push. Pushing, for my pull. Then I throw in the foot stepping. And I start to reverse the push and pull. Whether the foot hold comes before, during , or after. Which foot I push on, and for what reason. When I finally have you off balance and pulling? I suddenly push and strike, after pinning the other foot than you're expecting."

"I can learn that?"

"Give me three months. With your boxing game you already got going, let me give you this."

"What do you get out of it."

He grinned and winked.

"You're a boxer. Show me how to punch harder, when I want to."

I chuckled and held my sweaty palm out.

"Deal."

Why does ScribbleHub have so much ESLs compared to RR? I'm not exactly complaining but, why is that the case?
Comparing the quality of ScribbleHub and RR is almost day and night.
>>
I guess I approached this all wrong. While Novel Update is all about unique twists in tired tropes, RR is literally just power level autism.
Every story starts with the MC waking up, a few paragraphs of tragic backstory and lore dump to get it out of the way, then it’s all stats and grinding from there.
Hm… if this is the case, I may need to stop thinking in terms of story, plot, and character arc, and just design an RPG campaign for the MC to go through: main quest, side quests, collectibles, romance options, dungeons, mini games, boss rushes, and most importantly, skill trees.
Wonder if I can translate Arkham mechanics into book form somehow.

I think things like smut/ecchi/harem are seem as less desirable or even taboo in fiction in the anglo world (minus India and such), so people form other countries to write it, and they may not be as good in writing in english as it's low brow even for web novels.
Or maybe, the competition over there is less, so stories can be of lower quality prose and still find readers.
I don't know, I haven't posted my story there yet, just spitballing theories.

my autism keeps getting roused and immediately angered by western xianxia writers mixing japanese, korean, and chinese names together, sometimes splicing in western fantasy names in the middle of a sino-koreo-japonic fantasy name.
>>
>>24712921
I really don't get it
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean names don't sound the same. I mean they do within the language (I often can't distinguish characters in translated xianxia from one another) but a chink name doesn't sound like a jap name.

It's not even hard to stay consistent, literally just look up a name list or use a name generator. I've mostly been using greek, latin, and arab names and that alone was enough to give my setting a mediterranean feeling according to readers.

which would be a more entertaining OPMC (as in MC inserted into his max lvlgame character) to read?

The Menace to Civilization
>unapologetically unhinged, unfettered from all moral and sane considerations
>probably deeply autistic, actions guided by an esoteric and dubious process
>first encounter with villains end in him immobilizing them only to immediately attempt to measure their facial structures and analyze their personalities through physiognomy

>an indirect combat class that relies on summons, proceeds to summon or make a ton of golems and have them engage in construction as his first act
>projects attract curious locals, who he either bribes away with treasure or drives away with his golems

I started reading Secret Assistant to the Princess on Scribblehub.

MC gets isekai'd to the bedroom of a useless princess, but he's tiny, like smaller than a fairy. The princess had to hide him. She did it by putting him in her panties, but was forced to take a bath, so she shoved him inside herself. MC has been stuck inside the princess's vagina for 19 chapters out of the 20 I've read. Lmao. This is comical. You'd never read something like this in a published novel.

I was just going to sleep, you can't do that to me anon.

I think it's a good introduction, but it may be because I already know the universe as I had read Yellow Typhoon. Goes directly to action, which I think it's a plus. Readers may get confused at the amount of terms being introduced though. I was going to try to give you examples of situating the terms but I think it would only aggravate the problem, so you did better than I would've done.

Lawrence's relationship with Victoria is cute; some said it was cheesy in the last time you posted a draft and I agreed, but I'm not feeling it's as cheesy this time around. Or maybe I'm just tired. Romance is always somewhat cheesy in my eyes anyway, but the RR is especially assexual.

Length-wise it's on the shorter size, I suppose this is what you wrote today and posted here, so you have plenty of word budget in the chapter. I would use it to introduce the meaning of the concepts you've introduced. Especially Zeta and the Tacomas as both are the main threats Victoria is going against in this part of the story.

I don't think you need to introduce Victoria by the full name, at least no yet. Schwarzenberger is quite a mouthful, if awesome name.

All in all, good work anon. Need Victoria GF. Badly. Good night, I'm hitting the hay.

Eastern webnovel approach of switching between first-person POV for the MC and third-person POV for the side characters is based. Nothing is more kino than the side characters running into the MC and describing how cool he is.

Reasonable characters need conflicting desires.
>>
>>24713671
This. I rather read about reasonable characters who are in conflict because their strong views and beliefs don't mesh, and not because some of them are just fucking retarded. That only makes things more intense when the conflict can't be resolved simply by pointing out the obvious errors in logic, which they never do in stories written by dumb people.

If you want a sure route to the top of Rising Stars, layer your writing with heaping helpings of smut. You always have to keep in mind that web novels rose from the popularity of anime, and the reading hosts are anime watchers first, and one of the indispensable lures of anime is the jigglesome titties that populate every scene. Entire plotlines can be distilled to a pair of milkers bared in the moonlight. Reach a creative dead-end--no problem! Simply hem your characters into a deserted barn and commence an orgy. There's really no reason we all shouldn't be popular when it's simple, bordering on simpleminded, to engage the baser centers of the reader's mind.

>Zeta. It’s a mobile asteroid fortress capable of enough monstrous firepower to rival that of a battleship armada.
Zeta. A mobile asteroid fortress. Capable of enough monstrous firepower to rival that of a battleship armada.
I think if laid this way, the description of Zeta may be more impactful: an entire asteroid turned into a massive weapon. But that's up to you, it's your authorial voice.

Looking foward to the new cover art, keep it up.

Look, I did not expect so many sulphureous replies to my kindly post. IF you want to make a success of your work, all I would say is to interlard some of the duller passages with smut. Web-novel readers love smut. Otherwise expect to ooze out your writer's life in perfect obscurity. Which I think is a goal some of you secretly harbor. till the last chapter that is available online, i've gotta say it's much better than Mother of learning.
I really like it, I'm disappointed with the slow pace of chapter release, currently barely anything is resolved and the story ended in the most interesting part, which sucks.

Anymore recommendations like that? PGTS is much better at progression and conveying emotion than mother of learning, even though it's the same autistic kinda type of progression. I mea i really like it. For now - the author can still ruin it with some dumb shit like lizardfucking.

my story had one major antagonist and I look back and realize maybe this was a mistake but it is hard to craft a true long-term antagonist when the main character is someone who would kill on sight or die trying. The options are unseen-but-often-talked-about boss or cartoon villain that always gets away somehow and I don't like either of those. I ended up eventually having an untouchable character who is killed by someone else and I don't think that's very wish-fulfillment. I have autism.
>>
>>24711405
Steal them from books you like. Every fight I've written is taken from Glenn Cook's Black Company series. I've used the forvalaka and Limper fights as inspiration for a dozen rumbles.
>>
>>24714704
>cartoon villain that always gets away somehow
What about a villain that always escapes by throwing a subordinate under the bus? You get a single major antagonist and the wish-fulfilment of a villain getting up-comerance. Throw in something like the villain getting crippled and bitter after narrowingly escaping death and you got the recipe for some good antagonist.
>>
>>24714704
Just make it to where for every major encounter, the power dynamic shifts further into your protagonist's favor.
1st: Protag rushes to fight before he is ready, needs to get bailed out. Protagonist losses.
2nd: Protag has gotten some growth, is now an equal match for the antag. This time, the antag is the one who gets bailed out. Protag is closer, but this is still a stalemate/loss.
3rd: Protag is beyond than the antag, so much so that the antag's attempt at bailing is thwarted.

What's kino is to closet your strapping MC with a scullery maid. She's half-clad and the light peeking under the door gilds her breasts. How's this for an idea: a set of french maids form the staff of a household, and their job, alternate with the duties of cooking and cleaning, is to satisfy the sexual needs of the lord of the manor. The story becomes a merry-go-round of lust and power. Because the maids have different dispositions, and varying shades of interest in the lord, he has to show himself differently to each girl. Always the result is the same--rough sex, minutely described. But maneuvering the girl into bed demands a delicate play of wits by the seducer-in-chief MC, and that, it transpires, is his true kink. He could have whoever he pleases; after all they're all in his employ. But he wants to wheedle into their affections. Amid the turmoil of feelings, things turn nasty between the maids, but he does little to intervene. When any girl threatens to overmatch the rest, he merely cools on her for a while. The house, meanwhile, has never looked better. On and on whirls the merry-go-round, indefinitely. What do we think? Add magic at opportune moments, and it could be a runaway hit.

I'm writing a web novel with the female MC. There's very little preface to the action. The reader is thrust into her hero's journey toward the mist-cloaked peak of a mountain. When she reaches the top, her sword incarnadined with battle, we come to find that the holy grail she's been fighting toward is an abortion clinic. Once she shuffles in the door and slides into the stirrups before the examine doctor, the conclusion proceeds as realistically as any kitchen-sink drama. There's the disapproving nurse and the cold-fish doctor, and the patient tense and fearful. The unyielding light plays up and down the doctor's instruments. He slaps on his latex gloves, adjusts his glasses, and says Let's Begin.

After some thought, I believe my black hole/void-based power concept is the strongest foundation for my LitRPG, as it contains all the genre essentials:
Magic System: Void-infused abilities, unique to each individual.
Magic Users: The Altered are humans who have come into contact with the Void yet manage to retain their sense of self. Their power is determined by the degree of exposure. Second-hand exposure, such as slaying abominations, is the most reliable way to grow stronger while minimizing Void corruption. Certain bloodlines are naturally more resistant to corruption. Then there are the Void Walkers, those who have directly touched the Void and returned, bearing forbidden knowledge and immense power. They are the true rulers of this world. Many who enter the Void in search of power lose themselves entirely, becoming something unrecognizable.
Monsters: Living beings twisted into eldritch abominations by Void corruption. The extent of their corruption determines their strength. Human-based abominations are often the most dangerous, their higher brain function making them more susceptible to the Void’s whispers.
Map: A post-post-apocalyptic Earth, warped by the Void’s influence. Floating manors drift in the sky, black cathedrals pierce the clouds, dark forests shift and move in the night, and rivers carry the screaming souls of the dead. This brave new world offers no shortage of unique and twisted locations to explore.
Factions: Different Void Walkers rule over their own territories. Some appear benevolent, offering protection to the people, but no one can truly comprehend the motives of those who have crossed into the Void. Cities under their control are divided into rigid hierarchies, with powerful Altered families at the top and the powerless at the bottom. To climb the social ladder, people strive to slay abominations or risk touching the Void themselves.
Existential Threat: Outer gods press against the fabric of reality. The Void Walkers are divided into those who seek to break the veil and allow their dark gods to cross over, and those who seek to stop them.
Main Character: A regular guy in the 21st century who falls into the Void when a black hole suddenly appears beneath his feet. He becomes the first Void Walker and the one who has remained inside the Void the longest. When he finally emerges centuries later, he finds a world twisted beyond recognition. Despite being a Void Walker, he appears unchanged and uncorrupted by the Void’s influence, or at least he believes he hasn’t changed much. One moment, he was waiting in line to buy Pokemon cards, and the next, the world went black before he was hurled into the future. As an avid gamer, his Void powers manifest in the form of an RPG-style system, complete with an item shop and skill trees.
(All terms here are placeholders, since I haven’t checked if they’ve been used elsewhere, and “Void Walker” is so generic it’s probably been taken.)

I've been thinking about doing a litrpg with a support focused protagonist. There's been a trend of them lately in anime with them not realizing how important they are or their party rejecting them for being useless at combat, but I think it would be more interesting to write one who is the strategic leader and is known to be the lynchpin of the team. Not necessarily overpowered, but recognized as an important role and treated as such.
>>
>>24714593
I'm more awed you can introduce the premise, the lead cast, the antagonist, set up a conflict, build towards a climax, and wrap it up in what amounts to maybe 10 chapters. Maybe you're really effective with your word use, or maybe you've left something important unsaid.
>>
I've been reading Halls of Magic by Annabelle Hawthorne and M. E. Thorne and I realized that the potential of meeting other characters - conscious actors - is what makes worldbuilding interesting in a story. You can create a cool fantasy world, but if it doesn't have other characters in it it isn't nearly as interesting. I didn't realize it while reading Hemingway's Fisherman and the Sea, but I think I didn't get invested in that story for the same reason.

Why do western authors write characters that always try to get rid of slavery the first chance they get? I just started reading a story. MC gets isekai'd, defeats some noble and inherits all his servants. First thing he does is try to release all the servants from servitude because of some weird moral sense. Why? It's a stupid thing to do in a world you don't even know. Why would you get rid of all your help before you even know wtf you're doing?

Why even write this kind of servitude into the story if you're going to get rid of it immediately? Are authors really do delusional that they try to sell the "oh, you freed me, therefore I'm going to serve you out of my free will"?

>>24716201

Web novels are sorely bereft of sex scenes. How come? I've read uncounted volumes of RR novels and not a one features a pair of beef boys with their pikestaffs drawn roasting a lustful little wench en brochette. I ask you, why not? It's got to the point where a good sex scene would separate you from the masses of daily published work in a big way; your star could soar.
>>
>>24716247
> RR novels
And there's your problem, RR doesn't allow sex scenes.
>>
I take a scattergun approach to web novels. The worlds don't develop linearly but spin out from different directions; a nameless centripetal force, i.e., the author, then pulls them into order. You start from one point of the compass and work toward the center, where the action lies. Then you back up to a new point and start again. Between the start and the climax, little time passes but the reader has learned immensities of detail. And the inestimable richness of an alien world is made real to them. That's the goal of these novels--not some lumpen stroll from point (a) to point (b), a tenet cherished by traditional publishers, but a whole new way of seeing. Also loads of sex. You can't scant the sex.
>>
>>24716271
You might want to learn some physics along with taking your schizo meds. Centripetal force points inward, not outward.
>>
>>24716279
You might wanna learn how to read if you plan to be an author. I say the the centripetal force "pulls them into order." They start from different points of the compass and work toward center where the action lies.
>>
