What's up, bros? What have you been reading lately? Fiction or non-fiction.I'm reading>Christ in His MysteriesBy Columba MarmionColumba has been beatified and his canonization cause has been opened. It is an amazing book, no matter if you are a beginner in the study of theology or advanced. Easy to read but at the same time has great content (and we all know how hard this is). I would recommend this for every Catholic.
anime church
>>24890187i been readin el sueƱo del san francisco el mehicano ese he was a real catholic mang he dreamed about santa madre maria giving us back aztlan because we ethnically catholic and we worship her statues mang
>>24890187Anything that talks about experience is legit, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ambrose and Augustine... I would avoid scholasticism though. Starting with Aquians Catholics tend to fall prey to the Western pathological practice of philosophy, where you take common words and ideas, pretend they are analytical and then draw implications as far-reaching as your imagination allows you, until you arrive at something you feel is profound. And voila, you gained an insight without risk, without cost, without actual human participation, merely enlightened by your own intelligence. We know from science that this doesn't work. But it's an incredibly attractive challenge for cerebral young adults who need to feel intellectually acheived. And for a while we did.
>>24890199The two greatest experts in mystical theology of the Church in the 20th century were conservative Neothomists. Arintero and Garrigou Lagrange.Mystical theology and scholasticism is not an "or" thing. Teresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena were arguably our greatest mystics and they had huge respect for scholastic theologians.
>>24890207It's very frequently an "or" thing when it comes to books, whick is what the question was. If you manage to find a good book by someone who at some point wrote unfalsifiable speculative philosophy, I'm nothing but thrilled.
>>24890187I go to the Summa Theologica whenever I have a question.
>>24890199>merely enlightened by your own intelligenceI don't need no phony God's blessing to be euphoric
Remember to read Sigrid Undset, anons.
>>24890187Anglican herengl, I'm jealous of Luce but I'm also kinda thankful we also don't have a Luce because of all the hentai drawn of her, either way I'm thinking of getting a sticker of her to put on my journal.P.S.: You're all heathens treating the Pope like the voice of God on Earth, but you're my heathens and I'd take you over anyone else anyday.
>>24890658I did boughted Kristin Lavransdatter in a secondhand bookstore recently and I do plan to readed it eventually.
>>24891322It is a great book. The descriptions of the geography kind of make me want to move to medieval Norway, even.
>Mfw I actually had to tell a priest at confession that I sinned by jerking off to r34 of Luce + my imagination for a whole night>Mfw I wanted to be a priest growing up and only gave up on it at 16, because of woman
>>24890187TradCaths will say 'look at modern Protestantism' then unironically post images like this.
>>24891771There is nothing wrong with Luce.
>>24891772Congratulations, you've contributed to the hundreds of years long decline in the aesthetic intelligence of Catholic culture.
>>24890187Books? Dude I just want an apartment/house and some basic money to live...
>>24891792The Church is not a heavy metal band. There is no problem in having a cute mascot.Having a cute mascot won't make you love God less. It won't make you heretic. It won't make the masses worse or less solemn.
>>24891958It makes God less of a divine mystery and makes him personable and to some degree commercial. It makes God mundane and wordly when you're supposed to be overwhelmed by his presence. In a world with increasingly larger than life overwhelming things and constant informational flow the catholic church has decided it's best to look like a feel good club and dettach the more spiritual or hard to comprehend aspects of it from worship. Hell it might be an issue with my local church but im genuinely struggling to attend mass because of the fucking awful gospel-leaning music they play for the boomers but driving for 30 minutes to find a more solemn place is just as big of a hardship. At least in my country the church seems to be taking wayyyyyy too many hints from non-catholics in how they present themselves
>>24891988Luce doesn't represent God. She represents young pilgrims.
>>24891988I joined a very orthodox reformed, confessional church that practices exclusive psalmody and very slow and meticulous expository preaching (typically takes several months to get through one book). the pastor and the elders call me all the time and have randomly visited my home. I'm expected to learn the confession and shorter catechism, familiarize myself and take on various theological stances, study the history of the early church, the reformation and our denomination. they encourage me to use the church library to study various classic works from historic theologians. it's very daunting. I was not prepared for it, and now feel foolish for thinking I was going to be able to just sit in the pews on Sunday and feel closer to God without having to make many changes in my life. It's like I was adopted by a new family and now have many new parents, brothers and sisters; all of whom are deeply concerned and care for me. I pray that I can persevere-it's not easy, especially when you're a neurotic degenerate 4channer.
>>24892047All that is to say that I sought a solemn, Godly environment and it was more than I had bargained for. The burden of the cross is not a simple one to bear, and the burden of my sin is now more apparent to me than ever.
>>24892042I mean so in a more general sense. Obv she doesn't represent God but having that type of poppy almost corporate symbolism, which goes far from just Luce and into design elements of other stuff the church uses on a regular basis in the 21st century, makes the whole institution as a whole seem increasingly banal and earthly in it's essence when it's supposed to be the body of Christ. The moment you make the church mundane, dull and chibi is the moment you lower Christ's image by association. I get the church is supposed to change with the times but it's not subjulgated to said times either
>>24892047You aren't going to like this, but you should read some Buddhist texts, or at least listen to some Buddhist sermons on the Sangha or Sang-ha (Their version of Christendom). The people around you are earnest, or maybe even dogmatic, but they don't understand that this earnestness can also be a form of pressure, guilt, and can be seen as suffocating to some people. I think that Christian communities would do better being a bit more relaxed in how people approach their relationship with God. It is a personal relationship after all and I'm not saying that they should be so accepting that they lose their conventional and conservative tone and approach. But being a Christian who has studied Buddhism and has gone to Dhamma (sermons) I'm surprised at how relaxed everyone is. Its way less suffocating as it seems that the Buddisht community puts an emphasis on trying not to judge people and to also be respectful of a person's privacy.I don't know how to really explain it, there is a community there and it is just as tight knit as Christian communities are but the Monks and Preists put a lot of emphasis on that everyone has a personal relationship with Buddhism and some are farther down the path than others and the best approach to help those behind you is "restrained help" where you help in very minimal ways until they are directly asked for help because "by helping an old or injured man down is a nice thing to do, you rip their independence and their chance at transformation away if you put them on your back and do the whole hiking trip yourself with them on you."As someone who is a degenerate 4chan user myself and as someone who is very private and has very distinct public and private faces, I really appreciate that aspect of Buddhism and I'd like to see at least some restraint shown in the Christian community as well.
>>24892056Luce was just a mascot for an event. There is nothing too serious about this. This is the one time our aged Boomer hierarchy did something good that will attract younger people. Do you also dislike Saint Terese of Lisieux? The German Synodal Path going full heretic is a problem. Modernist Seminary Education is a problem. Seminary directors expelling people for praying the rosary, agreeing with Church morality or showing too much reverence for the eucharist is a problem. The crap that was done to the "Arautos do Evangelho" in Brazil is a problem. Poorly written DDF documents are a problem. A cute mascot is not a problem
>>24892077I want to sell 3D prints of martyrs or some metal shit like that, what would you suggest? Stations of the cross maybe? I want martyrs being ripped apart and beheaded and strangled with their own entrails and pierced by arrows but I need a good list of them that doesn't have 2000 names. Is there a list of most metal martyrs or are they ranked by the gruesomeness of the gore officially?
>>24892067You're right, I didn't like that. Appreciate the sentiment, though.
>>24892077A cute mascot IS a problem it's just a very tiny and irrelevant one, still a problem. The fact there's nothing too serious about it is exactly the problem. Of course out of all the problems in the church wasting time malding over an anime character is usually a bit exagerated specially when I see people calling it heretical or saying anime is hellish and evil. Luce herself ain't the issue it's more so a symptom of the actual issue of making the church less grand in it's essence which turns it into a big joke and somewhat pathetic, it makes the church look less serious, though this has been evident through decisions the church has made for the last decade or so with how they present themselves publicly and people only decided to call it out now cause "animuh" but still. I like her design I find her cute it's just cmon man really
>>24892047You know... you're right actually. I don't think I or most people have the fucking guts you got to endure all of that even though in my opinion it's the ideal type of worship. It's just that people seem to not even try to keep that type of worship on a solid middle ground but instead completely redefine it to try and "get on with the times" or "make it less alienating" when really their current approach also happens to be extremely alienating for people like me who want faith to be take a little more seriously and less like a feel good club
what's the symbology behind the seashells in her eyes, and the anchor near her name.I hate anime but I'm in my 30s and didn't grow up with that sort of thing, so I guess I just don't understand it, but it just astonishes me the church would adopt anime mascots to reach the youth.
>>24892114>I hate anime but I'm in my 30sI'm in my 30s and I love anime, I didn't really get fully into it into my mid-20s though.
>>24892114The Church needs to talk with the younger generations. Luce has gotten good attention to the Church.
>>24892114>>24892120And here is more symbolism
>>24892117I think the dragon ball z kids in high school with their silk button up shirts with tigers and stuff on them, acting goofy at lunch time really just made me not want to associate myself with it. I get that it's more mainstream now and not relegated to the nerds like it was back in the day, but I haven't recovered. Plus I hated cowboy bebop.. and that was really the only two anime shows I was ever exposed to.I did think shin chan or whatever it was called was funny when it was on TV in the 2000s. A friend turned me onto that. >>24892120>The Church needs to talk with the younger generations.I get it.. but dang.. at least it's not veggie tales I guess
>>24892128Also have some reservations re 2cv but I haven't really fleshed out a firm position on that yet>>24892120Interesting. Thank you.
>>24892128I get it, I was kind of lumped in with those nerds but I had a glittery tiger shirt not a silk button down one lol.Cowboy Bebop is so fucking good, what did you not like about it?>I get it.. but dang.. at least it's not veggie tales I guessIt can always be worse...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cMW3zacHVA
>>24892112I understand completely where you're coming from, thank you for your thoughts
>>24892128Think about it like this. What was the last time our Boomer hierarchy did something that actually got young people interested in the Church?Young people like the TLM, for some reason. Out of spite, they go out of their way to ban the TLM.Young people want solidity. Our hierarchy writes ambiguous documents to make other liberal Boomers happy.I remember one time where the "Youth Synod document" of a parish ignored their actual Young people in that parish and talked about what the Young people in the 1960s wanted. This time, they created something that young people like.
>>24892140Well I'm the Presby that wandered in, but I understand the need to reach the youth, and apparently Luce has been a success in that sense, so I suppose she's fulfilled her purpose
>>24892136>Cowboy Bebop is so fucking good, what did you not like about it?I don't know, I just knew it was time to switch over to letterman or conan when it came inAnd lol at that video
>>24892151>letterman and conanYikes, normie alert! I did like how when Letterman was retiring he showed his audience Hatsune Miku and his boomer audience was absolutely bewildered by it. And do be fair, Crypton Media chose one of her worse songs to sing. There are far more better songs to show them that had her sound far more humanlike but it was funny to see the audience's reaction.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Ifupd4gTA
>>24892166Letterman was pretty out there in the 80s, he was definitely the most experimental and unusual of the late night guys, but by the 90s he was essentially just another boomer. he had the best and most diverse musical acts out of all of them. Plus he was an old salty guy who enjoyed making pampered celebrities sweat.
>>24890187anime?
>>24892175https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDRCwJHBCXcDid you know in Japan Christians are over-represented in politics and in entertainment? Also, anime Jesus.
