I don't thing slang suggests a language is degenerating, Shakespeare using Elizabethan slang is complete gibberish to me as he does sometimes, especially in prose passages.But I do believe language degenerates in terms of grammar and phonetics becoming increasingly simplified by collapsing sounds into the same sound and removing part of speech. I don't consider simple shifts to be degeneration, so long as the distinction of sounds and parts of speech is still as firm

Why does language changing seemingly always involve simplification rather than a homeostatic level of complexity, or even an increase in complexity because of a desire to express newer and more complex ideas?
