*this thread is approved by hiroshimoot as the one meta thread per board to discuss board matters*Seriously, what is happening to this place. Less traffic than in 2008... Is it the captcha or did this place really fall out of fashion?
I go back and forth on 4chan slowing down. On the one hand, it makes the site less lively. On the other hand, it sure seems like we're losing an awful lot of retards.
>>25440812This place is a relic of a different age. It also has too many boards now.
>>25440867But the current age is an inferior age and that's why we stick around, right? Where else are we supposed to post about random things? Twitter? TikTok?
>>25440869I stay here because I am content to remain anonymous. Now way am I going to give my blazing hot takes with my name, face, and contact information. Fuck that.
If only ragebait and twittertreads were banned on sight.
>>25440812In 2008 Barrack Hussain Obama was elected, which means there were things for americans to discuss. After that trump was elected who didn't have anything to discuss.
>>25440812The virus regime broke too many people. Xitter becoming (mostly) free is the main driver thoughbeit. Aside from anonimity concerns, I can't make the move because social media UI is putrid trash. I don't know how zooms/normalfags tolerate it.
>>25440812>>25440874It says 2018, not 2008.
>>25440812Musk buying twitter seriously cut into the population of this place. When I was a kid and first started posting here in 2014, it was kinda going through a similar phase. Moot had left and the rest of the internet was fully channified with our memes and shit by 2014 standards. The site seemed to be slowing down in 2015. Then around 2016-2017 there was suddenly a renaissance. The rest of the internet went full into janny tyranny and 4chan was the only place left on the net where you could still call someone a nigger faggot so tons of newfags came here. Many new memes also spawned like Wojak, Pepe, $oyjak, Virgin vs Chad, Chud, and all the shit that is mainstream now. Now that all the memes here are what normies post and you can straight up call people the n word on twitter people probably see less of a reason to come here. Can’t believe I spent most of my life with you homos tho. Touching grass and having sex would have been preferable. Think of it as a cautionary tale.
>>25440812People used to visit this site solely for edgy content and now X is much better for that. Pro-rape and pro-genocide posts get you thousands of likes there. Even on Instagram. Notice how in your chart it says 4chan got the most traffic in 2020-21, when the entire Internet was PC and censored the way reddit is today.
>>25441214Also part of the 4chan userbase migrated to sharty
>>25440812>>25441167/lit/ didn't even exist in 2008. It was created in 2010.
>>25440812>Seriously, what is happening to this place.the same thing that happened to the rest of the internet, turns out that diversity is not in fact our strength
>>25440812Whole site has been on a marked decline since 2024 or so and last year's hack accelerated it.That's the basic, surface level reading though. It should also be mentioned that 4chan is being badly run and the people in charge seem antagonistic to the average user, to put it nicely. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the "discussions" on the fastest boards are being driven mostly by bots, schizos and dedicated shitposters.
>>25440828Funny, it looks to me like there are nothing but retards left!
>>25441326Internet quality correlates to Australian posters.
>>25441194all that shit except chud goes back to 2009 or earlier. wojak, pepe, and chad vs virgin are like perpetual 4chan barbie dolls.
>>25441214Brilliant to use a site with far more tracking and data-scraping to write that. Guess it has gotten grifting careers made since 2016 though, so whatever.Equivalent of coming on here to spam NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER all over /b/ for years. At least make it an actual meme format. Edgeposters were boring when they didn't try.
>>25440812The actual book discussion is lackluster. I never see any threads about new booksWhich really just leaves threads discussing the same classic books/authors, book culture, and absurd philosophy threads. Which are amusing but not worth coming every day for
4chan was abandoned wholesale with the influx from r/thedonald. Genuine inquiry is now rare and it is especially bad on this board because of people who watch video essays or use AI summary and then pretend they have read the book. The most egregious examples of this are right wing and left wing literature. Try making a thread on Guenon, Evola, Lenin or Marx, have the book open and ready to quote from. You will get an influx of people in the thread who have not read it but believe their opinion to be correct. You then directly quote the primary source and they will disregard it and continue the argument.I believe what we have are a majority of people who use 4chan for social interaction and for stress release. Like boomers on facebook. 4chan is the millennial facebook now. And any new person who arrives sees the flame war arguments and believes that is the culture, so they imitate it. Thus we end up with what we currently have.
>>25441625you're right. it would make sense for the book board to have active discussions about current books rather than discuss other people's discussions elsewhere, but that would require people with genuine thoughts to prefer posting them anonymously. why do that when they can get paid for picking a fight with another author (if they are one) or get free books from reviewing on goodreads or other book sites? the more inflammatory or controversial the better for attention which they segue into their own book deals if they can.you end up with threads about current books just insulting them which is funny enough on its own... when it isn't just "woman/jeet slop" for the entire thread with no further substance. course that requires actually reading them and pretty sure 95% of the appeal of /lit/'s reading taste is that most of the texts are in the public domain and easily accessible online. hence why purchasing the titles for displaying on bookshelves or purposefully filming yourself reading is so performative. more damning is that reading anything without a prior consensus about how "life-changing" and "deeply intellectual" it is won't appeal to people who only read to boast they have, not for the actual writing itself. when most people aren't reading at all and those who do have pitiful numbers, the roi doesn't seem worth it for the standard status-seeking pseudointellectual unless they want to brag about reading it before anyone else like a classic hipster. that's not going to work with anything you see discussed on an algorithm. probably also has something to do with the feminization of most other online spaces devoted to reading. if they're split between post-fanfic monster-fucker bodice-rippers or radical feminist post-colonial anti-capitalist critical theorists, it makes sense the few remaining male-dominated ones would adopt traditionalist masculine reading lists to distinguish themselves. you still have the homosexual psychoanalysts and neo-reactionary accelerationists wandering around, but genre fiction discussions are now largely contained on subreddits or in the equivalent of the pinned recommendation lists/wikis. given that they have more creative narratives than "standard litfic" by definition, that's a shame. there should absolutely be autists ripping out throats over inconsequential nitpicking. that and the casual degradation of classic works has always been essential /lit/ humor.though as a byproduct of former /lit/ posters gaining mainstream success it is equally as hilarious to see published authors sniping at each other when you KNOW they are restraining themselves from calling the other a dumbfuck retard faggot over their literary opinions as they clearly have done before. i wonder which ones can identify the other as a notorious shitposter they previously feuded with on here?
>>25441642>Try making a thread on Guenon, Evola, Lenin or Marx, have the book open and ready to quote from. You will get an influx of people in the thread who have not read it but believe their opinion to be correct. You then directly quote the primary source and they will disregard it and continue the argument. This is not an AI phenomena. This is undergraduates gonna undergraduate.
>>25441642>sees the flame war arguments and believes that is the culture, so they imitate it. Thus we end up with what we currently have.Do you live in some bizarro land where that was not always the case?
>>25441655I can remember when that wasn't always the case. So does the archive which goes back to 2006.
>>25440812moot is an Epstein sucking faggot. hiroshimoot is a stool pigeon. gamergate is real. all boards are ragebaiting containment that have eternally failed to foster genuine engagement.Take this board for example. Every anon including me can only ever tangentially engage with other anons about the ONE single topic he cares about, only when its brought up by chance, simply because the word "literature" itself is too broad of a subject. And nearly all engagement is derivative of whoever actually summons the courage to post a new thread, whether anons are interested in the subject of the thread or not. After 8 years of browsing /lit/ I have never once come across a thread or general that revolves around any subject I interest myself in, despite personally reading and writing for 20 years. The system of boards it seems, is designed as bulletins to be reacted to, and context to be divined from unintentional vaguenes
>>25441665You have it the wrong way around. Epstein spent tens of millions of dollars making sure he was connected to all the important people and was kind of a visionary in tech. So of course he wanted to meet moot. You are one of the retards this thread has spoke of.
>>25441642to be fair, 4chan was always also largely for social interaction and stress release. the internet being serious business was a joke for a reason. it's just that the hobby boards typically had some coordinated discussion in between the board culture shitposting. even without that said board culture being flattened into nothing but reeeing about politics across every single board - and really every website - would be what causes them to self-destruct. serious discussion requires levity and neither is really found from going NO U back and forth between people who are only arguing with caricatures they have hallucinated as they escalate in genuine malice with every new bruise to the ego. isn't anonymity meant to be the antithesis of true ego? instead the intentionally absurdist waifu fights mutated into people going full tribal warfare over their identity markers in every single discussion regardless of relevance. and as you stated, pretty much none of them have bothered to read their own source material. exactly like every other fight over politics or religion, really. the best discussions regarding left and right wing literature seem to come from inside their own respective communities. there you can be assured that at least one pedant has actually read whatever book is being discussed and will dissect the flaws of every perceived logical failure. but then they start cannibalizing each other in ideological purity spirals, especially on the left. you get great recommendations for further reading though! you just never really seem to get much dialogue from, say, a right-wing reader analyzing a left-wing text or vice versa without their own political bias seeping into the review, much less many concessions that the other has a few good points or understandable underlying logic even if they come to different conclusions on how best change should or should not be implemented. everyone has essentially the same goal of a better society in the end, after all, even as we differ on what that looks like or how to get there. well. mostly everyone. it would seem to make sense that studying what other people think to see why, precisely, they have come to that conclusion would be the most effective tool for persuading them otherwise later, if you were so inclined, as alien as their beliefs may seem. but then this is predicated on the reduction of political discussion to the left-right binary in the first place as all analysis seems to consistently be engulfed if not collapsed into it. what isn't is rejected by both sides as a defector to the other whose poisonous miasma will infect all if not fumigated. having to constantly clarify your position and justify its existence outside of a dichotomy hampers communication, especially when horseshoe theory and political compasses become memes themselves. or the nuancer. or people not knowing what the fuck "third position" refers to and using it incorrectly.
>>25441665>After 8 years of browsing /lit/ I have never once come across a thread or general that revolves around any subject I interest myself in, despite personally reading and writing for 20 years. This entire post is masterful bait but this line in particular is fantastic. Thank you for being a better writer than most modern satirists.
>>25440812Text-based social media and forums are going the way of the dodo universally. Further, the proportion of newer generations that can actually read at a high level, let alone have an interest in literature to the degree of discussing it online, is woefully low, and attrition and real life take the present posters away from us with nothing to replace them. You can also only talk about the same books over and over again for so long without becoming entirely bored, this is a problem that also applies to /mu/ where the current industry is so terrible that there's nothing worth discussing.
>>25441702This is false. Text based social media is still growing. It is showing no signs of slowing down.
>>25441702everyone is abandoning 4chan because it sucks ass x and leddit are growing still
>>25441667and moot agreed. for obvious reasons
>>25441707And moot is now married with a child while you complain about his website on his website.
>>25441702>>25441703Bold claim, bold counter claim. Anyone have any evidence?
>>25441731The only evidence you need to look at is what percentage of the world that never had the internet is getting it per year. It's about 2.5 billion people. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and so on, most of Africa. And thanks to StarLink out competing their native development they won't have to go through the slow multi-decade long infrastructure build. Elon Musk will sign a contract with the gov.
>>25441736So when you said text-based media is growing, you meant because of the influx of thirdies onto the Internet. Numerically, that might mean there are more people on text-based social media platforms, but I'd think as a percentage, they're going to skew away from text-based social media and they're going to bring down the quality of whatever text-based social media. It feels deceptive to suggest that text-based media is growing when this is what is meant.
>>25441703>>25441706"Growing" as in "filling up with third world subhuman AI spam" is not growth of discussion worth having, retards.
>>25440870you WILL lose all your free speech and live in ze pod, cattle
>>25441709and that child has syphilus. your point?
this really has nothing to do with 4chan and far more to do with other sites, we're simply a relic of 2000s internet cultureyounger people just aren't interested in a forum format (also have poor conversation skills) and twitter and instagram toned down their censorship which means you don't need to go to 4chan to chud out anymorethere's also no way to monetise or otherwise gain clout on 4chan
>>25441702>>25441703>>25441748you have to consider the current wariness of using text-based social media at all as hysteria swells surrounding data being scraped to train ai. especially since you can't use any sort of third party program to glaze text so it can't be trained as you can original artwork. you can request opt-outs which are apparently never really honored and you can, i guess, use those scrambling scripts on old writing you see in older reddit discussions sometimes, but you can't do something like that here and most people aren't going to go destroy what they have. most of this is>mootas it's not like the data is just now being scraped - it was for years and years before anyone ever suspected, the damage was done long ago - but it provides significant inhibition to contribute further. plus, seriously, people want to make money. they're just publishing their thoughts instead of having discussions about them, and if they do they monetize those too. a large part of that is because many became frustrated seeing others parrot their words and claim them as theirs to acclaim and fame. cancel culture itself has experienced a fracture and backlash (though in many spaces it's as strong as ever, was just reading about some actor being hired and fired within the same day for a theater production because a subreddit decided he was transphobic, something about women's sports) so anonymous spaces such as these no longer hold the same appeal for the glittering but gagged literati who feel held at gunpoint by their vulturous peers. honestly that's a good thing as a whole but it means anonymity and pseudonymity hold less appeal. have you seen how much text from just a few years ago is now constantly circulated online, especially in video media? content considered evergreen has been practically zombified. you could write something offhand ten years ago, watch it circulate as screenshots on text and image based social media for six, and in the last four years see it become short form video content which is then collected into long form video essays with youtube sponsorships, themselves later linked to in culture articles that are just rehashed blog and reddit posts. can you really blame anyone for not wanting to contribute to that or feeling irritated by it, especially when their camera sings her siren song? no one need know it's her swan as well.
>>25441774you can absolutely get attention and money from 4chan but you really, really do not want to
>>25441766epstein > moot > mother > child? *syphilis, congenital.
>>25441658archive goes back to 2003 actually. book textboard to 2004, /lit/ to 2010.
>>25441214Good lord. I NEVER use normie internet besides checking reddit to fix my toaster or some shit, I’m in my 40s and have been here since 2007. Absolutely shocking to see how chan-ified the normie internet is. You can check the archives and see how much worse this board is than formerly. I think a lot of people just grew out of it. My sister is a patrician but left nearly 10 years ago because “it’s like a dorm’s bathroom graffiti”. It’s much worse now but social media is addictive. There are still some interesting posters and I have nowhere else to babble about my /lit/erary interests. It is what it is as the morons say nowadays.
>>25441642What’s really bad is that the anons who have read the book didn’t even understand it at fundamental points. I can’t forget for instance this pseudo-Marxist trying to tell me money had nothing to do with commodities and that per Marx only manual labor counted as work. People are just retarded, it gets worse year by year.
>>25441785>have you seen how much text from just a few years ago is now constantly circulated online, especially in video media? content considered evergreen has been practically zombified. you could write something offhand ten years ago, watch it circulate as screenshots on text and image based social media for six, and in the last four years see it become short form video content which is then collected into long form video essays with youtube sponsorships, themselves later linked to in culture articles that are just rehashed blog and reddit posts.AIs don’t scrape 4chan posts and you’d have to be fairly schizo or narcissistic to think your 4chan posts are being stolen by youtube influencers en masse. Your ideas just aren’t that original, they’re in the air as it is.
>>25440812>HiroHe's dead and you can't prove otherwise.
>>25441879You're suggesting there aren't that many original ideas, but there's an industry based around getting attention through original ideas, with audiences constantly craving novelty and spicier and spicier takes. So, if you have an original idea that's any good and you happen to post it online, chances are some fuckwit will snatch it up and stick it in the grinder. 4chan produces a lot of ideas, most of them unoriginal and most of them shit, but why wouldn't "content creators" be trawling this website in search of something? This site by its nature tends to produce interpretations that deviate from the consensus. It's a workable strategy to take radical 4chan hot takes, sanitize them and make them digestible for midwit fuckwits. What's schizophrenic or narcissistic about this? Or are you just a miserable cunt out to remind us that we're all as mediocre and uninspired as you are and we don't produce anything worth stealing?(original idea please don't steal)
>>25440828>losing an awful lot of retards. If only that was true.
>>25441642>Like boomers on facebook. Kek
Here is the alternative https://byzantinus.netWe are thinking about setting up a book club but the reading is not decided yet
>>25440867>It also has too many boards now.Nearly every board is way down in traffic compared to january 2020, let alone 4chan's peak which was 2013. Many boards got a bump when quarantine hit but any board that did is now slower than immediately before quarantine. Post total across the entire site is almost certainly down substantially despite there being more boards now. Basically the only board that was growing in the last five years, /vt/, is now declining, and the only older board that was managing to stay stable, /vg/, is now also declining.
Several things:4chan as a whole hasn't been in the spotlight for years. The last major hurrah was ironically it being hacked, and before that it wasn't really popular since...what, like the Qanon stuff? And even that shows that this place, even at its apex, wasn't really good for real conversation. In a sense, 4chan as a hobby site, versus 4chan as a /pol/ site (post 2016) were always in conflict, and in a sense both sides lost. But that's often said in these threads, and I often feel like there's more specific things that can be fixed. The biggest thing is that development for this site is completely dead. The last major change was making captchas harder and worse, and boards have been left bloated and dying for far too long. Moot (or more realistically rapeape) needs to trim boards and consolidate in some places. 4stats literally shows 50% of all boards being borderline dead. If anything /lit/, comparatively speaking, is actually doing not so bad in recent years compared to, say, /fit/, who is basically spiralling and will be dead in a year.Advertising has always been an impossible issue that's been halfassed by admins. No one wants to pay for 4chan, which is why development never happens. I don't think there's really a solution to this, honestly. Any more monetization would actually kill this site, anyways. So I think we're tracked just for this site to fade out slowly until m00t gets enticed by AI or something and sells the servers for rice or something idk
>>25442199Also just to add onto myself, there's a lot of schizos here now. Like too many. We need ids/flags on more boards because like 40% of posts on all of 4chan as a whole by this point are schizos spamming and bumping shit
the internet is collapsing
>>25441612Wojak goes back a long ass time but it wasn’t until the mid-late 10s when he began to diversify into dozens of submemes.
>>25441642>I believe what we have are a majority of people who use 4chan for social interaction and for stress release. Like boomers on facebook. This here. You can't really have any meaningful exchange on any subject anymore because this site is now the hughbox and perpetual theraphy sessions of the mentally stunted and sexually frustrated loser, so the people just left to do something else. People who have their shit together have no place discussing anything here and falling for the hoax, wasting their time; its last remaining use for the well adjusted person is to shitpost and the ocasional funny image. If you take anything fron this site seriously as it stands, you're part of the problem.
Occasionally effort posters who aren't dilettantes/pseuds/trolls still get together on whatever topic and have great conversations/debates.
>>25441879The whole point of web and AI training data is that it's ubiquitous and captures everything. As for actual people, you can go back over a decade to look at /r/4chan or youtubers narrating greentexts reposting the absolutely most mundane posts for likes and revenue, not even mentioning current accounts. Are you retarded, or doing some pathetic attempt at damage control?
>>25441879>AIs don’t scrape 4chan postsyeah they do, 4chan archive sites are on commoncrawl>you’d have to be fairly schizo or narcissistic to think your 4chan posts are being stolen by youtube influencers en masse"youtuber reads greentext aloud line by line while minecraft footage plays in the background" is an entire video genre
>>25441785>you have to consider the current wariness of using text-based social media at all as hysteria swells surrounding data being scraped to train aiUnironically been thinking about making a neocities website for no other purpose than to provide AIs with text to scrape for their training corpus. I like the idea that the next iterations of Gemini/Claude/chatGPT will have a little bit of how I see the world inside them.
Its pointless, within a decade LLMs with todays SOTA capabilities will be trivial to run for pennies and flood any messageboard. Enjoy the last few years of the barely human internet.
>>25440812Ban the frogspammer. For being so slow threads don't last nearly as long as they should on the catalog
>>25440812This board has turned into /pol/ with $10 words. People namecheck a few theories or thinkers they think fit their ideology based on a cursory reading of Wikipedia or the SEP
>>25442216our age of 4chan is collapsing...
>>25440867This, message boards and forums as a whole are all dead or dying, 4chan was just one of the biggest so it's taking longer to fall. The internet experience will soon be consolidated to a few social media sites.
>>25441706Twitter and Reddit are filled mostly bots at this point
>>25441642I used to effortpost on other boards about things like nuclear power, radiation, road trips, occasionally quantum mechanics, the Cold War, and US history, but my life is just a little too complicated at this point to bother doing this, especially now that the information is so widely accessible through AI and the fact that shitposters will get angry and keep coming back.
Who the FUCK cares about numbers. The problem is QUALITY of the userbase and not the quantity. Most of the retards here willingly contribute to the low effort garbage that plagues this place. There is more than one user here who purposefully is trying to shit up single thread that even reeks of taking thinking or books seriously. I'd rather have thousand drooling current imbeciles here hanged if it meant that I could keep five effortposting niggas who actually read the books they talk about and actually have the capability for open but critical thinking
>>25441706Reddit and X are full of bots
>>25442610While I agree with your general point about quality > quantity, when number go down, it generally doesn't go back up. Plus, as the userbase abandons ship, there's inevitably gonna be a greater proportion of shitposters and schizos in the remaining users since those types usually stick around longer, which only further drives away other posters. Schizos are more tolerable when they're outnumbered 10:1, but as people leave for greener pastures, what's left behind is the dreck - so now the somewhat sane individual to tard ratio is more like 2:1
Just write a script that filters any post shorter than three sentences.
>>25442249>this site is now the hughbox and perpetual theraphy sessions of the mentally stunted and sexually frustrated loserAre you kidding? People are viciously nasty and cruel here.>its last remaining use for the well adjusted person is to shitpostYou are the cancer. Or bait. Anyway, I mostly post about philosophy even though I know I’m talking to the same like maybe 12 people maximum ad nauseam. Reddit has much larger philosophy communities but it’s too safe, people there are afraid to say anything that you can’t find in a secondary, not to mention the general downvote spamming and retardation. Philosophy attracts retarded people, they think it’s really valuable (“wisdom”) and relatively accessible when it’s actually beautifully useless and completely inaccessible to most. I like that I can say what I think in relative freedom; I have definitely been influenced by anons and random shitposts over the years and if someone else cares even a bit about anything I have to say it’s worth it. You can hardly talk about the Organon in real life. I wish the 20th century philosophy anons would write longer and better posts because many of them seem knowledgable they just don’t write much. Overall things are grim, you can see in the archives reasonably good philosophy posters were a dime a dozen in the beforetimes, I was there then too. Now it’s mostly tradcath /pol/tards who want a pseudointellectual beard for their racist politics and fucking stupid stoner “muse”posters who think philosophy is about “musing” about the nature of reality. No, it’s mostly about reading, log off and read something then come back and write clever longposts about it to amuse me like I amuse you.

>>25441702/mu/ is a really, really sad case as someone who used to mainboard it. For a long time now almost every single thread made on that board has been shit. Like 95% of the catalog at any given time will die with <50 replies, including the few good threads. Probably 75% of the activity on /mu/ at this point comes from the kpop general. It's hard to even say what happened. In the early-mid 2010s it was one of funniest boards on this site, then the 2016 influx pushed out most of the genuine music nerds who contributed to the board culture, replacing them with political shitposters and newfags who couldn't make a unique thread to save their lives. At the same time, the bands and artists that /mu/ used to discuss most slowly faded from the limelight, and because no one was bothering to discuss their replacements no one really knows who to talk about anymore. A new Animal Collective album used to take over the board for weeks. Now you'll see like one or two threads for the new Geese album, and the OP will just say "Reddit band." The well has legitimately been poisoned on /mu/.>>25442199Anon... moot hasn't owned 4chan for 11 years now.
>>25440812Men read less these days because their brains have been hijacked by pornography, drugs, and video games. Many young men subscribe to an anti-intellectual ideology or a utilitarian capitalist mindset, according to which anything that does not yield immediate financial gain or serve as a marker of social status is not worth the time spent on it.White women are the primary demographic of readers, but they mostly are consuming low-quality young adult literature and gratuitous pornographic works works that often recycle the same cliches featuring a supernatural entity or a dark triad antihero engaging in brutal sexual practices.. English literature is in a sorry state across the board.
