What are their most noteworthy contributions to literature?
>>25495861Tractatus Theologico-Politicus
>>25495861van den vos reynaerde, spinoza, erasmus, jacques perk, albert verwey, nescio, adriaan roland holst, simon vestdijk
>>25495861
I read some Jotie T'Hooft and liked it.
>>25495861None. As a rich and developed society their artistic output is subpar outside of painting and maybe architecture. Soulless people.
If you stretch it out the duchy of burgundy then you can maybe squeeze Commynes in there
>>25496040>>25496063OP clearly states Dutch language.
Anne Frank’s Diary is the only notable book they ever produced
Dutchie hereNone, honestly, I'm not sure why, I think our language just sucks when it comes to literature, our language is very sober and to the point
>>25495861De legende en de heldhaftige, vrolijke en roemrijke avonturen van Uilenspiegel en Lamme Goedzak in het land van Vlaanderen en elders One of the few Dutch novels with international influence. Originally French, but its Dutch translation seems to be regarded as the main edition. Whimsical and actually pretty good
>>25495861>>25496245None, because literature is meaningless bullshit and the Dutch are based.
>>25496335>our language is very sober and to the pointThat's a good thing, /lit/cels will seethe because your language doesn't lie and obscure reality.
>>25495861Probably Vondel's Lucifer for being the sort of odd, theologically more complex, and kinda forgotten twin to Milton's paradise lost. Should be noted that it got almost entirely ignored because it was to Catholic for the at that time very tasteless protestant Netherlands.
>>25495861The Autumn of the Middle Ages and The Evenings are the only Dutch books that I've read.
>>25496329>theirno he didn't.>What are their most noteworthy contributions to literature?Their most noteworthy contributions to literature are written in Latin.
>>25496335your language also sounds like and looks like compleete and utter shijt
>>25496335Flemish here, I think it's a pretty good language for writing. I read the new Mein Kampf in Dutch and I think it was very well written. The people suck but the language isn't half bad.
>>25496342>None, because literature is meaningless bullshit and the Dutch are based. It's the opposite. Most Dutch and Flemish people suck, but the language isn't bad for writing.
>>25496335I'm a buitenlander living in the netherlands and I truly will never understand how you people can be so unpatriotic/suicidalYoung dutch people speak more English than Dutch + people just do NOT care if you learn or not. I've had a colleague literally tell me "I don't care if foreigners learn Dutch, I can speak English so it doesn't matter"And I live in a supposedly nationalistic region lmao
>>25496842Because they have nothing to really grasp onto, or at least weren't taught to do through years of conditioning and education. That's the problem. What constitutes the Dutch character that is inherently tied to its language?
>>25496334It was written by another person who was hired by Anne's father. He was not even Dutch...
>>25496876Yet he could write Dutch… curious… You háve read Het Achterhuis, haven`t you?…
Ik ook her? I barely know her!
>>25496842nationalism is something class and industry specific in the Netherlands, while patriotism is currently out of fashion. there are a lot of industries where if you want to get anywhere (and be considered human) you have to speak dutch while in others English is the only language required. Its a very interesting division which even exists within industries. >>25495861most Dutch literature is about masturbating, depression or religion, all topics that have either been normalised, are to depressing for a large public, or are no longer interesting/relevant to a general audience. The Netherlands used to be a deeply religious country and its cultural output reflected that but with the religious collapse of the 60s this religious dimension has become unfamiliar to most of the public and most importantly to almost the entirety of the cultural elite. Most of the Dutch "great" literature of the 20th century comes from the transition to an atheist culture but even this is not relevant to the general public as most people do not only grow up atheist but are also unaware of what christianity even is. they can imagine no alternative than the present. Because of this most Dutch literature is relatively obscure even within its own country.
>>25496842they just accepted anglo culture has its natural superiorThe english-speaking world created a trading empire that the Dutch can only dream about.
>>25496842I'm Flemish and I consider the Dutch and German languages vastly superior to English for literature. But the average Dutch guy only have very basic knowledge of the Dutch language. Just enough to buy a loaf or bread more or less. They've deluded themselves that they have a perfect command of the English language, which is a far cry from reality. The average person fucking sucks and the world is going to hell.
>>25496842Capitalism has corrupted them.
>>25496842I think its one of the defining characteristics of Dutch culture is its complete disregard for its own language. Our pride comes from being able to speak and deal with many cultures and languages and as it were manage or outplay them at their own game. This is the thing foreigners looking for Dutch 'nationalism' just do not seem to get: to not care for Dutch is not a lack of national culture, it is the national culture.
>>25497628>outplay them at their own gameThis is the delusion I referred to earlier, pervasive among Dutch imbeciles.
>>25497630sure, it often can be a delusion but that is the basic attitude.Dutch is something only spoken among Dutch people, and to speak Dutch as a foreigner has somewhat of an implicit condescending connotation of 'oh you're too stupid to know English/French/German, i'll speak your language for you'
>>25497637>Dutch is something only spoken among Dutch people, and to speak Dutch as a foreigner has somewhat of an implicit condescending connotation of 'oh you're too stupid to know English/French/German, i'll speak your language for you'Hahahahahaha this is hilarious, but thanks for sharing your honest feelings. That means you have a huge inferiority complex. I'm Flemish and I don't feel that way at all, I think Dutch and German, when used at a high level, are superior to French and English. Pic related, this book is way better than its English translation.
>>25497641Again its not an inferiority complex, its a different attitude to language. its domination through language as either 'I am forcing you to speak my language' (this is exactly what the English and French did in their colonies) vs 'I am speaking your language but you cannot speak mine' (Exactly what the Dutch did in their colonies). I'll admit the first is definitely a better attitude for projecting soft power but i dont think the Flemish can really talk shit about the Dutch about that considering you cant even manage to make half of your own country speak it.
>>25497628sounds like jews
Dutch be like>live in a swamp like an ogre>act like gentile Jews, won't give you food if you come over to their house>speak the language of servants>obsessed with cheese despite making inferior cheeses than the French>eats fries with mayo, yuck!>most popular fetish is farting into a blanket and trapping someone inside>rebels against the Spanish, ends up in unwinnable wars against England and France a few decades later>invents capitalism, suffers from the first economic crash in history because of a fucking flower>empire consisted of spice central, a retirement resort for boomers and ooga booga land where they dumped their hicks>greatest joy in life is condescendingly going at length about how environmentally friendly his cities are to American tourists>second greatest joy in life is making headlines every year around Christmas in the Anglosphere (pic related)>DUDE WEED LMAO>so antisocial he divided society so he never has to interact with people of a different religion, has the gall to brag about being tolerant anyways>loves cuckoldry so much he turns his capital into Europe’s brothelAbsolute joke of a country. What do they even have to write about the Dutch experience that's of interest to anybody outside their cunt? How lovely Amsterdam's canals are? How they used polders to reclaim land from the sea? The importance of discovering gas fields off your coast? Le pretty windmills and tulips?Below is their entry for Eurovision 2024 (warning: don't watch without a barf bag close by, it's the most uncritically EUrophilic thing ever made by man), this is the level of their cultural production.>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT2wY0DjYGo
>>25497871he's spiritually broken like 99% of europeans
>>25497882>that songfuaaarrkkkkk the Dutch are such sick bastards
>>25495861My favorite Dutch book currently is Stephan Enter - Grip.>>25496060Good list.>>25497658>De doorsnee Vlaming is even hopeloos als de doorsnee Nederlander. Totaal onbewust van de grootsheid van de eigen taal en cultuur.Wat zijn je favoriete Nederlandstalige boeken die volgens jou de beste voorbeelden van deze grootsheid zijn?

>>25497628Soulless bugmen.

>>25497641>>25497930Thats not even a novel thats just some generic protslop
>>25496876What the fuck
>>25497641>inferiority complexHuh? That sounded like peak arrogance to me. >filthy barbarian, you are not worthy of speaking our language and we can easily master your dumb babble anyway so don't even try
>>25498292Could be the case, but that's not how he presented it.
>>25498312Thats literally how i presented it you dumbass.
>>25498319>implicit condescending connotation of 'oh you're too stupid to know English/French/GermanYou want to prove them wrong because you feel inferior
>>25496329Erasmus was native dutch speaker?
Pretty much every Dutch-language novel I've read sucked balls.Willem Elsschot is alright though.t. student of Dutch literature>>25496563>LuciferRepetitive as hell. I guess it'd be slightly more enjoyable to watch than to read.
>>25497628outplaying everyone by letting your country turn into morocco
>>25498354What do you think of Nescio?
>>25497628>outplay them at their own gameYou guys actually believe this shit lmao
>>25498377Haven't read any of his work. Is it worth checking out?
>>25498410Yes and it's all only about 150 pages in total. Funny, inventive, and very moving.
>>25498410Being a 'student of Dutch literature' is not saying much then; hardly a step up from the "I'm Dutch myself, had to read some books in highschool and they suck! lol" you encounter so often in these threads. And then what would anyone else know itt? The few actual answers get ignored and it turns into your typical soulless-capitalist-protestants-(I-guess-their-painters-were-alright) & ik-ook shtick.Like most national literatures there has to be something if you dig - poets doing something with the language, likeminded people interesting in the art of literature (often foreign influenced) and translating that to their language, etc. - but like most places young people are not taught to appreciate literature but feel forced to read some books in school and do not get into it. Then further the Dutch in general don't appreciate their own writing so there isn't a very well known canon anymore, so if someone becomes interested in literature (come to /lit/ for example) he'll likely be overexposed to the much better disseminated Anglophone and other writers.Overall it is still a lesser, more minor literature than say the German or the French etc., but there's got to be some Dutch & Flemish writers out there that have written something worthwhile (and there are).Nescio, yes, is worth checking out (he has a small enough oeuvre after all).
>>25498388The Dutch haven't even mastered their own language, see >>25497663>>25497675
>>25498619That was why they simplified their cases and gender.
>>25498354>t. student of Dutch literature
>>25495861Paul van Ostaijen.
>>25495861Anne Frank
>>25495861The Evenings by Gerard Reve is a bleak and cynical but genuinely funny portrait of a socially retarded male in the 1940s. Many 4chan users should identify with this. The Sorrow of Belgium by Hugo Claus is also very good, but challenging.
>>25499673bezorgde ouders is much better for a modern audience, especially if they are worried about the great replacement.
