The same way in Early Modern Period, many Asians had difficulty understanding Christianity when they first encountered it and thought Jesus was another Buddha.

And even then, (as seen within media) the concept of killing god is also very prevalent as they go out of their way reject salvation of the otherworld and would rather look within.Thats also why there if a westerner does comment to some from of Buddhism it might be something 'fringe' like shin Buddhism
