I recall enjoying 1984 immensely when I first read it like, eighteen years ago now. I recently reread it for the first since then earlier this year and it bored the fuck out of me. Guess it wasn't so much the main story with Winston and Julia that I enjoyed so much as the background bit about the ever-shifting eternal war that is going on in the background of the setting. After they finish reading the Goldstein book the narrative falls off a fucking cliff and never recovers. The torture segment is really boring and lame upon recent reflection.
