I've been told that I may be doing original research into my chosen subject matter, and this has encouraged me to pursue a PhD in my field. I originally started on the road of my ideas when I was still getting my MA and they formed the bulk of my master's thesis. I presented them at a conference this summer and got some pushback that basically amounted to the fact that my ideas are interesting and need more work.I could do this all on my own, in theory, but why not try for a PhD so I'd get paid to study?So that's my own personal story. I know it's not typical, I know a lot of people seem to get a PhD just to get one. But I, at least, have an external motivation.
