Anyone here read the manga? So far I definitely prefer it over the TV series.>Action scenes that don't consist of the same drawn-out attack animations, featuring some surprisingly visceral violence at times (Umi getting spiked, Hikaru's dog biting her in the throat)>More confident in it's sense of humor, Hikaru's spontaneous cat ears and the super-deformed characters never coming across as an afterthought>Story is more concise than the TV series, though I still appreciate Nova and a couple of the MOTW capersBetween this and the Sega Saturn game I've found a new appreciation for the characters and their interactions, a prime example of how a good cast can turn a fairly banal or juvenile work into something truly special.>Hikaru is both a fierce warrior and the friendliest person you'll ever meet>Fuu is wise, but too dense to understand jokes or hyperbole>Umi is a snotty rich girl thrust into a world of monsters and warlocksIt's been a couple years since I watched the anime adaptations and I've still got about 3,5 volumes left to go, but I will probably stand by most of these words long after I've finished.
how is the mecha
>>22487219I like that the animal/dragon motifs are very understated.
Just for kicks, another example of how the manga is more in-tune with it's own humor.I'd argue that the same goes for Patlabor.
>>22487219>how is one of the most renowned super robots shows /m/?
>>22487208Only read the first chapter so far
>>22487341Retard, he's asking how ARE the mechs in the manga version
>>22487208>Anyone here read the manga?Yeah. I own several versions of it in fact. The hardbacks that came out a bit a go is nice. I still think I prefer the anime though. The manga is nice but the anime feels like things are given more time to breath and as a result the trio become a bit more than you said. >Hikaru is friendly and brave but more naive. She rushes in without thinking about anything else. >Umi seems self centered snooty but is really acting as Hikaru's foil and a voice of common sense in over her head. She doesn't want to leave people hanging but has her own family and people back home.>And Fuu is the peace maker who sort of has a more middle pragmatic outlook. Well we're stuck here and we have to do what we have to do. Stupid sexy Ferio. The manga is still good but it's almost too fast paced. And the quiet moments just give more weight to the girls and their quest.
>>22487208I have the two omnibuses. Though, I haven't read much of them.
>>22487353>The manga is still good but it's almost too fast pacedI dunno, it's not like the original Mazinger and Grendizer manga, that were more or less treated as promotional/bonus material.I mostly mentioned the Saturn game because of the journal entries and the ability to read the characters' reactions to the local flora and furniture - complete with a cheeky joke about Umi trying to grow her rack (I don't play RPGs often, but judging by the recurring Working Designs rage/defense threads on /vr/ I suspect it was inserted by a bored translator).
>>22487208Clamp art is so pretty.
>>22487208I don't remember the anime well enough to properly say which I prefer at the moment, but the manga's great.I think the reason the lightning speed of the first half of the manga stands out to me so much is that they have rather convenient transport as opposed to having to camp out and take their time in the anime, so it feels to me like it's trying to skim over it despite not actually doing so. Which I guess is my fault for continuing to read manga adaptations of anime that actually are trying to skim over things.I think I prefer Rayearth 2 in the manga though, it's fucking insane, things coming down to Hikaru and Eagle makes a lot more sense, and that last page has got to be my absolute favourite final page in any manga. I also don't remember feeling that strongly about Asuka in the anime but when I read the manga I thought she was great. But on the otherside I didn't feel as strongly about Hikaru in the manga, so either that's on me or there was a bunch of extra stuff in the anime I liked.I do love the anime's soundtrack though, it's probaby my favourite, and now that I think about it I don't know why it never occured to me to have it on when I was reading it.Also the Japanese editions with these covers are absolutely fucking gorgeous, pictures do not do them justice. Easily my favourite manga to actually have copies of.
>>22488793>. Easily my favourite manga to actually have copies of.Yeah I don't buy a lot, especially considering a lot of series can run for a long while and 20-30+ volumes doesn't sound like a lot it eats up a lot of shelf space fast even when you double row. So normally I'll stick to shorter series or nicer hardback editions. >>22488577Now if only they would actually fucking finish X/1999. I know it's not /m/ but goddamn.
Hikaru Shidou is confirmed to be the second coming of Noa Izumi.>>22488793>I do love the anime's soundtrack though, it's probaby my favouriteThe orchestral stuff is beautiful, while most of the battle music sounds like it was made on a cheap MIDI synth - especially the crusty brass instruments.Probably meant to invoke the atmosphere of contemporary RPGs, though considering the emaciated state of TV anime at the time it might just be the studio skimping on the sound budget.
>>22488829>Now if only they would actually fucking finish X/1999They seriously didn't finish it?
Does this show have a lot of mecha action or is it mostly human stuff?
>>22487208I only read the first part. I thought it moves way too fast, it’s basically battle after battle afte battle. I barely feel like I got to know the villain characters before they become allies. Is there any good emulator for the Saturn game? I kinda prefer season 2 of the anime so it's disappointing no game covers that, but it looks great regardless.
>>22489554There's no robot battle every episode if that's what you mean. It's very serialized so there's many epsodes of exposition and world building before a big mecha battle happens. Also, the robots take a while to appear in the show itself and only become prominent after epsode 16 or something close to that.
>>22489554It's like twenty episodes of the most cliche fantasy shit (with maybe one good episode in there), then some robots and a decent enough segment, then the second half is somehow more cliche but has a lot more robots and associated designs. The mechs themselves are fine to great; there's a lot of tedium around them.
>>22489596>there's a lot of tedium around themWhat this even means?
>>22489559>I thought it moves way too fast, it’s basically battle after battle afte battle.I don't really mind, so far each of them has had played a part in the cast's development.>Is there any good emulator for the Saturn game?Yaba Sanshiro works pretty well on my laptop (8th gen i5, 16GB ram, Intel UHD Graphics).Don't know well the game works with older or less demanding emulators, but considering that it's a 2D game you shouldn't run into any performance drops.
>>22489600It means that the mechanical designs are interesting and the rest is boring - what's there isn't inventive or novel and the parts that have been done a thousand times aren't done in a particularly effective way to make them worth watching in their own right.
>>22489506>They seriously didn't finish it?The anime gave it an ending but the manga was left on permanent hiatus
>>22489720

>>22489992Clamp could be pretty grim at times
>>22489596How does the manga sequel compare to the second season of the anime? I know that the anime has lots of concepts Hirano intended for Iczer, so I was considering checking it out for that reason. Does the manga increase the mecha in the second half too?
>>22490028One thing to know is Nova isn't in the manga. She was created for the anime.
>>22490030Debonair was anime original as well. Eagle mostly plays a larger role in the manga. At least in regard to his relationship with Hikaru. More of a thing between them and Lantis.
>>22490222He thinks making fun of a show with girls will make him cool and manly.
>>22490222>>22490263It's just an in-joke, anon.
>>22490028I don’t think it was Hirano’s idea and while Nova does look like a Iczer reject, she was still designed by Clamp and their writer did the scripts for the entire second season.
>>22490497Pic related
>>22487208Wasn't Nova original to the anime? Oh, and Presea and Eagle did not die in the manga, and Hikaru admits to wanting a threesome with Lantis and Eagle.
>>22490501>Japan onlyDang. I bet t hose are interesting. >>22490502Hikaru's just too pure to understand.
Finished reading the first arc the other day, still stand by a lot of what I said in the OP.It's nice that the anime expanded the journey, but I find the Magic Knights more interesting when they face off against people rather than waves upon waves of mindless beasts. Using the diplomatic victories as the catalyst for obtaining the Mashins makes the whole thing feel more earned.
>>22489619I just realized the FTO has twin GN drives; and in the anime, it releases GN particles as well when starting up its engines.
>>22492925Now if only it could use Trans-Am
I can't never tell what the fuck is going on in the fight scenes, the paneling is garbage
>>22495276I can follow the human fights just fine. But the mecha are drawn kinda sloppy and look too tiny with no sense of scale. If you draw something so overly detailed you need large panels to showcase it. That's how I fell about Shimamoto's G Gundam manga as well. Not every artist can make mecha well, no matter how good they are.
>>22489720>manga was left on permanent hiatusOuch.
>>22498312Yeah as I understand there was some disaster or event that made it a sensitive topic so they never really went back to it.

>>22568196it was a bit of a hurdle to get over selling off a lot of my older game shit, but tbdesu I _never_ use a dedicated console anymoreI'm always doing at least two or three things so I can have a game on my laptop or my phone, or in a window on my main stationary machine, but "okay now I will turn on the game console and only play the game" isn't anything I have the time or effort for after a hot minute of selling it was kinda nice to know my shit was going to homes where it would be appreciated and enjoyed, like the dude I flipped my copy of Sailor Moon Another Story to weebed it up about which senshis we waifued, and I hadn't actually played the cartridge of that in like, twenty years. Turned out the saves still worked too lolI'm still keeping some of my cooler merch, like the puyo puyo pinsstill have most of my consoles because I don't want to deal with the bullshit of checking if they work, gonna give a couple to my sister-in-law because she wants her wii back after a decade and a half, and her daughter broke her PS2 fat, pretty sure I have a couple of them around here somewhere so she could use one for parts or if it works already even better

Sort of like how Kids WB skipped the first few episodes of Cardcaptor to put more emphasis on Syaoran as a co-lead in order to make it more appealing to boys.
>>22573409More importantly the censor job ended up being more of a challenge than they probably realized it would be and just called the whole thing off because without getting into spoilers for any new viewers there's some stuff that's just impossible to dance around.
>>22573409the biggest problem it faced was it was opposite Batman Beyondcensorshipwise iirc they mostly drop the first episode's "Hitomi mopes around about shit" and just cut to the chase about getting Van there and her and him back there, sorta mushing the first three eps into two, might have been the first two into onethere were shadows overlaid but it was still pretty clear that Knight Captain Assistant Old Guy seriously got the shit impaled out of him, not sure that there was anything elseiirc if you REALLY want to check I think they put out some of the tv edit on vhs

>>22489619Got better pics of those ones?>>22487208What about the OVA?>and the Sega Saturn gameHas that been released elsewhere?
>>22608443Sadly no
>>22608443The Saturn game came out in America at the very end of the system's life and is one of the rarer and more expensive games.
>>22608460It is actually the last official western release game on the system
>>22608443The OVA is great, but it's essentially its own thing. Sadly, too short, as well.
>>22608551>too short,The sad fate of a lot of OVAs.
>>22608460Heard it's an actually good take/adaptation that can stand on it's own too.>>22608554Word. Back then I though that it was very bold of them to have them pilot the Mechas while nude tho now I feel they really holded back at the very end by, at leadt, not outlining the nipples. The doll-anatomy's uncanny valley gets in the way even of the story.
>>22598373>you cannot escape the kame hame haa
>>22608460>>22608443>>22608514Its was released in 98 in the US>>22609180Fuck no man, you been duped!, its a fucking Working Designs localization, so its BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD, makes 4kids and current Funi look like Intertrack in latin america, also the game was rebuild because "SUPPOSSEDLY" sega lost the source code. (Working theory, they just pulled a "Ghost Stories did so poorly in Japan" type of thing, and the difficulty and glitches were caused due to MUH RENTALS)
>>22609626Zoomie
Best girl with best mech
>>22487208I only watched the anime dubbed and subbed.I tried getting the omnibus to read, but someone stole the package. Maybe i should just find a torrent.
>>22487341>most renowned super robots shows>renowned for having them in like, one episode at the endok
>>22609868>I tried getting the omnibus to read, but someone stole the package. My condolences.
>>22609626There is a hack around that reverts the Working Designs gameplay changes. Sadly AFAIK, there is not a combined version with the undub hack, at least for now.
>>22609626>sega lost the source codeJokes aside... That happened to Panzer Dragoon Saga.
>>22609710Can't disagree with that.
>>22609180>holded back at the very end by, at leadt, not outlining the nipplesI agree. And it's kind of strange they would, since Hirano always packed his OVAs with pretty good fanservice. Maybe they just thought it wasn't worth the effort drawing some extra lines and adding a little more colors, since their chests are usually obscured anyways.

>>22610942>since their chests are usually obscured anywaysIndeed. The funny thing is that, while they are actually obscured (like in that pic and >>22608443 ) the story flows well and them begin nude in the magical mecha actually clicks as they -are- also taking damage alongside it. They could have easily walked away with it but then they actually "show them off" and the 'fanservice' actually backfires with the girls looking more like barbies instead.
>>22612275Yeah, that's why it is kind of weird that, as a Hirano work, the fanservice would be half-baked. We'll probably never know, but I'll just assume it had to do with some arbitrary studio mandate and the like.As a sidenote, it's incredible how Umi is pure sex in every iteration, no matter what she is (or isn't) wearing .
>>22612297>it had to do with some arbitrary studio mandate and the likeThis. One of the adventages of the OVA format is that you just can do those "fanservice" takes and get away with a surprising number of things. It must have been one of those typical bad studio takes that keep them from going all the way through.
>>22612275>>22610942>>22609180>>22608443>>22612495Rayearth OVA was literally my first time i saw ''forbidden anime'' with nudity, they even show them uncensored on TV at the time, and i am latino, this and renting a bootleg tape of Ghost in the Shell with the HBO dubbed broadcast.
>>22569412This comment will never not be funny in context of the OAV existing...
>>22576831>>22577369White Knight Chronicles would work well with Rayearth stylistically.
>>22609626>its a fucking Working Designs localization, so its BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD, makes 4kids and current Funi look like Intertrack in latin americaNah it's not that bad. I mean, it is bad but there's none of the infuriating stuff you see these days like lame political rewrites at least. Iirc all the main stuff is mostly the same and all the really stupid shit like the infamous condom joke are for unimportant stuff. IMO Working Designs might have taken their jokes way too far and their translations way to liberal (lets not get into the gameplay changes which ultimately boils to whatever you prefer) but at least they cared about the material unlike localization teams these days. Rayearth probably being the best example given they were willing to wait as long as they did to release it burning money in the process.
>>22499070>>22500584He quit due to the 2011 earthquake iirc, but he seemed willing to come back before passing honestly I'd be fine with it ending if it didn't leave so much open with that extra chapter they releasedI kinda miss that series. It just didn't give a damn like a Troma movie or something
Happy 60th birthday to Minami Takayama, Ascot's voice actress.
>>22613218That's why I enjoyed it too. Also, Saeko was without a doubt the best girl.
>>22612890>they even show them uncensored on TV at the timeIs not that there is anything to show.>>22613074>White Knight ChroniclesIs that still a thing?

>>22614533Ferio and Fuu were really cute together.
>>22613213>it is bad but there's none of the infuriating stuff you see these daysThis. For all it's flaws, at least WD tried.
>>22615662People these days are honestly too spoiled with how often and how fast they get Japanese games. Time was there was a point when you might not even so much know any of these games existed outside some random magazine article that occasionally mentioned import shit. And that would still most often be about stuff that was NEVER EVER going to get translated. Even mainstream BIG Japanese games weren't always guaranteed to get a western release and the ones that did often had a very loose understanding of grammar. Did WD often go to far? I can't say they didn't. But being the era that it was they were pretty much the only ones putting in any amount of effort at all for these kinds of games. We didn't have anything to compare any of this too. It was even a crapshoot if people even say the anime itself.
>>22487208>>22615781Just a bit of curiosity, How the game looks graphics-side? Like a souped-up SNES game or like something that's properly on a 32-bit console? Kinda want to know as the Saturn was at least quite decent at 2D games (for example. Grandia uses some 2D tricks that make the Saturn version actually look and run -better- than the PSX version) and want to know how one of it's last games battled it out.
>>22615834>Just a bit of curiosity, How the game looks graphics-side?Google and youtube exist.
Bump
Has anyone played any of the other games like the SNES or Game Gear games? I don't think I hear as much talk about those games.
