=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

==INDIRECT COMBAT ROLES GROUPBUILD==

Build a mecha or vehicle that is meant for an indirect role in combat. This can concepts such as:
>Electronic Warfare And Communications & Airborne Early Warning And Control
>Minelayers and long-range weaponry spotters
>Scouting and Surveillance
>Commanding roles
>Sub-flight units to aid MS (Base Jabbers)
>Field Repairs & Supply
Basically any kind of combat role that isn't just "Robot made to shoot/punch another robot"

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

Question for you group build anon, one of the concepts I am thinking of doing an infiltration/sabotage unit. Probably a gruntmech (either GM, Zaku II or Zowort) with low visibility/radar absorbent paint scheme, equipment focused on asymmetric activities like sabotage and reconnaissance, maybe modifications for evasion rather than combat. Would this meet the theme in your eyes?
I have backup plans if you feel it is still too close to a standard mech (CASEVAC, Command and Recon being the three I'm most interested in pursuing) but if this ticks the boxes then it is probably first priority.

Die fucker

ive only made 4 kits now but i struggled w the plastic on this kit. Seemed very brittle and already had stress marks around the nubs even when I was super careful with my hobby knife

How do you get around that, just sand the shit out of it and paint every time?
>>
>>22600603
always try to whittle it down when you're using a knife.
if you feel like the plastic is hard to slice and brittle, use a file or sandpaper instead.
>>
>>22600603
Also this kit was the worse case of “stickers over rounded parts” I’ve had to deal with yet. I know, waterslides, but they weren’t available for this kit when I bought it. What’s the best way to do that, cut the stickers before placing them?
>>
>>22600604
Yeah I was doing that, it’s like the gate itself created the white stress area surrounding the nub before even cutting. Filed many of the nubs down too and same thing. The plastic was a lot more brittle than other kits I’ve done so maybe just cheap?
>>
>>22600603
what kit?
>>
How to deal with triangular gates? The ones that are V shaped rather than rectangular? Seems like Bandai is trying to make our lives easier and reduce the nub area, but cutting them and trying to file them just kind of wobbles the nub and stresses the contact point on the part. Maybe I’m just retarded

>>22600609
Beargguy Ohana Aloharo set. They are so cute but not the most fun to build. Lots of polycaps and plastic feels cheap like I said
>>
>>22600607
If you're sure that you were as gentle as you can be when shaving/filing down the nubs, then those stress marks were likely created when handling or cutting the parts out from the runner. All you need is a slight twist of the parts for those stress marks that occur on the outline of the gate, esp on more brittle plastics.

That's why you do the double-cut thing, it reduces the chance of nippers accidentally twisting the parts against the runner, but it's not a foolproof technique either. It's not necessarily caused by you either, could be accidental bumps in the factory, while shipping etc. It can't be helped.
>>
>>22600627
Yeah especially on the hard shitty plastic some of these kits use theres a high chance it comes out of the box already pre stressed

Looking for some advice, is there any way to modify this HG Goog so that I can take out or insert the elbow and knee joints?

I want to cement the big ugly seams on this guy but the joints just seem designed in a way that makes it impossible to mod the joints. But if I cement the seams with the joints still in the limbs, it's going to make painting the joint/arm parts sandwiched together an absolute shit of a time. What can I do here? Just accept my fate? Regret my love for Googs? Curse the nip who designed this kit?
>>
>>22600633
paint the joints, assemble, close the seams, then mask the joints and paint the armor

I think the best option is to cut out the part that connects to the knee joint and later glue it to the main leg
>>
>>22600633
It's not a huge deal to mask off the joint while working on it. Everyone seems super afraid of this but you could do a ton of work to avoid that, or just keep it masked while working on the leg.
>>
>>22600653
masking is the "ton of work" option, modifying the joint is much simpler

>Demi Trainer x 3

>Expansion Parts Set x3
These are for a squad build of three custom variants, I might pick up a second Demi Garrison as well depending on what I end up using on its loadout (one will be long range like a guncannon, one will be a standard engagement range, and one will be a melee focused demi).

ATK Girl series, JW-021 "Jinwei" (I guess that's how you pronounce it). Like other models from this series, you build two girls at once - armoured and unarmoured, with lots of spare parts because Chinese answer to having to use two parts is just to print two runners instead of trying to squeeze extra into new mould.

Also, in Chinese tradition, most of joints have to be fixed first as they either are too stiff or don't snap into each other at all. You could say you literally need to widen every hole but that sentence would be too lewd.
>>
>>22601099
what audience? that's just a regular looking girl you weirdo
>>
>>22601138
How does it compare to something like a Megami Device, if you've built one of those?
>>
>>22601139
Except legs being absurdly long, even for anime standards.
>>
>>22601144
Yes, I did. Quality control is worse (more frequent mould lines, parts not always fitting each other, much tighter joints and connections sometimes need to be widen) but thats nothing modeller can't deal with. Most of parts are undergated, which means that you are less likely to leave damage on visible sides but need to clean them better to make proper fit. Design is similar but with more Chinese touch you could see from their Gundam models - more fancy details, more sharp edges, more of everything. Hilariously enough, most engineer solutions are straight copied from Megami Device (probably coming from same factory).

On the plus side, Chinese are very generous on runners so you build both girls instead of one (so its actually two kits in one) and have lots of spare parts for future projects (including blank copy of every faceplate, which is a blessing if you want to paint everything, skin included), plus each next project from this series and Eastern Models in general is better than previous - early ATK Girls are reported to be quite odd and janky while I also have Quinlong from this series and was honestly impressed by her quality - and this one have it better as well, requiring far less adjustments and fixing. Price is also lower, at least in Europe (40-50 EUR compared to 70-100 for Koto models, on Mandarake they have similar or even higher prices). Overall, I would recommend both her and her sister model.
>>
>>22601163
Thanks, after looking around their website I think I'll try to order one of their newer models, the Camilla vampire one. Just need to find a retailer in Canada or willing to ship to Canada.

One of the few kits to actually use polycaps. Polycap quality tends to deteriorate, and these things only use one or two of them, so to sidestep on the polycap issue, they switch to fine build techniques that prioritizes a combination of mobility and construction at the same time. The Gelgoog and Gyan only use these polycaps in the torso, I think.

>inb4 ExExbein P-Bandai
>>
>>22601438
The Leo is the start of it all, but they still like to use polycaps on kits that would reuse parts (Death Army uses Eldora Brute parts, the other Wing series Gundams use the Sandrock's frame, Dagger L uses Build Strike parts, etc., but some large kits like the Baund Doc have to use the heavy duty type polycaps for structural integrity, a trick somehow reused with the Figure-rise Amplified Exodia). The entire G-Witch line didn't rely on polycaps, but that's a different story entirely. But I recall there are solid plastic equivalents of the same polycaps to strengthen the kit's stability more than their original joints, and they were first used on the P-Bandai AGE-1 Razor and AGE-2 Artimes Set, not sure where else they are used in non-P-Bandai kits.
>>
So I realized after searching that yeah, the green one from the Black K***ht Squad is the one that's regular retail, and P-Bandai lets you get the rest without having to buy and paint several of the green one. And it does make sense to make at least one of them retail instead of making the entire squad P-Bandai. Still kind of stupid though.

In-universe the GM II was designed to be an upgrade package for the original GM. It can be either manufactured new or retrofitted onto OYW surplus.
Correspondingly, it performed pretty disappointingly compared to actual new MS designs. That's why you see AEUG using the Nemo and Titans the Hizack as their basic frontline grunt where possible, and the GM III enters the scene so quickly.
>>
>>22602161
in fairness, GM II is several years old at this point and was never meant for high performance. Compare to Hizack, which although from basically the same time period is a better machine yet is still undeniably falling behind at that point
>>
>>22602164
Yeah, it's not a terrible suit as such, it's just what you'd expect from a post-war modernisation and standardisation project. The name 'GM II' is frankly, overselling it. The GM III, aside from being very closely based on the Gundam MKII, is more of a proper successor suit. In aircraft terms it's a block upgrade versus a new plane based on the old one. No amount of upgrades is going to make a Hornet perform like a Super Hornet.

the other anons aren't quite right, it's unclear (deliberately?) whether Narrative was equipped with psychoframe beforehand. >>
>>22602208
>>22602208
Narrative is not a spare Nu. Narrative and Mu Gundam were prototypes for the next generation MS, since Zeta and ZZ are dead-end lines.

Narrative was basically a hodge-podge of different systems they want to try out, that's why the core fighter, and yet looks like Nu and Unicorn. but, Narrative can easily equip different weapon and armor systems to "try it out", Narrative is basically F90 mission packs before F90

Mu Gundam eventually turned to Nu Gundam.

Narrative is basically stored in the warehouse since it is useless and basically Nu Gundam and Unicorn is just simply better than it. but Luio paid Anaheim for it since it is the only Gundam that has the specs that almost around Phenex's level.
>>

Gundam Ace from July 2019 had staff interviews about it, it's unclear if it had psychoframe before

do you need to use primer when airbrushing or can you skip that if your pieces are just an unpainted semitranslucent white like in picrel
>>
>>22602330
just import it yourself
>>
>>22602340
if you're using lacquers you can get away with skipping primer because lacquer thinner keys into the plastic. acrylics you absolutely need primer because normal acrylic paint doesn't have very good adhesion. you might be able to get away with it even with acrylics if you sand the fuck out of the surface first to give the paint something to grip onto, but i'd recommend priming.
if you want to keep the semi translucent look and use clear paints but you're using acrylics, you can use a multiprimer (finishers, gaia, hobbymio). clear lacquer surfacer also exists
>>
>>22602343
interesting, ty. I'm going to be using an acryllic white, and the rest of the paints are going to be lacquers. may as well do priming then, since there's a lot more white than anything else. Is there a huge difference between mr surfacer 1200 and 1500? my local hobby place only has the former and idk if it's what i should be using
>>

>>
>>22602349
1200 is fine. 1500 is smoother but it's not a huge difference. if you're going for a super high gloss finish you just might need an extra coat of gloss clear at the end
>>22602350
no need with lacquer primer. some acrylic primers benefit from it but even most acrylic primers are fine without because they're formulated for better adhesion than regular paint

Changing up a HG GM to have double jointed elbows, which of the following is better?
>Open up the inside sleeve of the forearm so that the lower joint can pivot inside there when needed, which will make the bolt on the forearm stick out when fully bent
>Put the lower joint level with the forearm bolt, meaning that it will stay in line with the joint but the upper arm is lengthened/the bolt no longer holds flush with the upper arm groove when pivoting only the upper joint
I presume that the second one is probably the best bet, but build up the upper arm with some styrene sheet?

that's the opposite of true though
articulated model kits are far better for dioarmas than statues since you can actually pose them to create any kind of dynamic mid-action scene you like
>>
>>22602578
>follow the designer's lineart
I WISH. Do you even comprehend how fantastic some of the lineart is and then the actual model kit is an abomination? I'll forever seethe about Jagd Doga.

I'm not going to complain about more Dunbine kits but Virunvee is kind of random isn't it? You'd think they would do Billbine or maybe the Vierres first.

wave engage sr3
wave gets a bad rap because their early kits are legitimately kinda terrible, but i'm building this one from about 2010 now and it's actually a great kit. it's not snapfit or anything but it's night and day compared to their 90s shit, there was clearly a lot of thought put into the engineering and how the parts are separated, almost nothing is just a lazy 2 halves clamshell job and i've had bandai kits with more flash/mouldlines/sinkage than this kit has. the sculpt is great too, i think syujyu did it

>>
>>22603061
is that wsc? yea i do really like the width of wsc sculpts but i think the wave kit is actually more accurate to the lineart... at least, looking at the sr1 lineart. i don't think there's ever been an official lineart of the sr3 from an angle where you can really see.
i also don't really like working with resin. just not as fun imo
>>

The Wave kit is actually more accurate. Syujyu's Engage sculpts tend to be top notch across the board.

yes i have experience with them. yes their recasts can be shitty. i've seen people post "perfect casts" from them before but that is not representative of my experience with them at all, i have never been sent anything better than middling quality, and a lot of them have been complete trash. i refuse to buy from them again at this point unless i can't get that kit from elsewhere, they've sent me enough trash that i'd rather spend the extra 20-50 bux to get something i know isn't going to be complete trash

I've found shop2000 GK-M to be better in general. A lot of E2406's recasts are just recasts of GK-M's recasts. That said I'm not sure if they do FSS stuff or not, but the Megami Device bits I've gotten have been good.
