=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

What was your first MG? How did it go?
>>
>>22692061
They're all based on the ugly post-00s aesthetic and not the soulful classic designs from the 80s and 90s

MG Exia many years ago, it's just as fine as far as MG goes, still looking fine on my shelves, so I don't understand why some people had an Exia with a loose ankles, etc. But I also understand why some people want an Exia 2.0 (or 1.5) with an updated 00 inner frames similar to other 00 MGs

leveling thinner. just toss your regular mr color thinner, you're never gonna need that shit since levelling is better in every way. the only time you don't use levelling is when you use metallic paints.

>>
>>22692373
>the only time you don't use levelling is when you use metallic paints
why
>>
>>22692377
levelling thinner has retarder that slows the drying process. you don't want that because it gives time for the metallic flakes to settle which reduces the effect. you use rapid thinner with metallic paints so it dries quick with the flakes not moving.
>>
>>22692380

That's the fucking ABDOMINAL CAVITY you brain dead parrot. The WAIST is the spot directly connected and prefacing the HIPS. The WAIST is PERFECTLY BULKY, the ABDOMEN is what's stupidly tiny.

Fucking hell, consider me baited and retarded for giving this the time of day, I'm sick to fucking death of retards mixing this shit up to bitch and whine about incessantly for a reason that genuinely is the exact fucking opposite of what they're crying about. Exia isn't a fucking "wasp waist". Zeta isn't a fucking "wasp waist". Wasp waist is thin abdomen and WIDE FUCKING WAIST AND HIPS.

Both still being 1/100 which that answers my question. Thanks ! So that means Xardion should in theory be the size of Sazabi if it's about 25 meters in height in its universe. I know very little about it I'm being peak secondary.
>>
>>22692511
>moderoids are similar heights to MGs
They are whatever the designer wants.
Some are 13cm, others 20+ and the Obsolete ones are like 8.5.
>>
>>22692514
that's incorrect, moderoids are NOT 1/100
the plastic models are the same size as 1/100 gundams. but they don't have a consistent scale, they are for a variety of source materials with wildly different robot sizes
for example Gunbuster (left edge, second from top) is 240m tall while Black Ox (bottom left corner) is 18m, but the plastic models will be the same height.
>>
>>22692518
>the plastic models will be the same height.

Black Ox will be around 15.5cm like Tetsujin and Gunbuster 11.5 due to being in that new mini transformation spin-off line.

What would be the best painting method to make the heat glow of Heat weapons like a heat hawk or sword? I'm gonna be relying on a black light to make them shine in photos and so far I'm thinking of just using fluorescent paint but using just fluorescent orange/red seems kind of lacking. I'm also thinking of maybe painting a bright orangey color that isn't fluorescent and then paint gaianotes fluorescent clear on top, I'm not sure if this is gonna turn out well and I can't play around with combinations yet cause I'm waiting for my paints to arrive.

This little weenie and he's been a nightmare start to finish. The back part of his red waist armor came broken out of the box and actually was supposed to bear a lot of the weight of his big fat wings. While trying to fix that I brain farted and pulled his torso directly UP instead of twisting it off his hips and snapped a delicate torso bit in two.

In the end I replaced the broken bits with metal parts, but now his metal legs are so heavy he can't strike any cool poses.

I disagree, while I can see that complaint being valid from ~2012-2018 with the nu and sazabi ver ka, the 3.0, and the freedom and justice, more recently we've been getting fewer design departures with the release of the jegan in 2018 being the exemplar of this with barely any detail beyond what was shown in the animation. even the recent ver ka kits of the narrative and zeta skew pretty close to the anime designs.

What causes paint to cheap off easily? I've painted four or five kits already and never had much problem with paint chipping unless I dropped parts like an idiot, but this time the paint is chipping off from repositioning masking tape or even just looking at it funny. I left it alone for a day after painting too before I touched it. It's not just the paint coming off either but the primer also. Am I doing something wrong? I guess it's not too big of a deal since I can just touch up with a paint brush afterwards, but what the fuck man.

At least my group build entry is nearly complete.

acrylic primer? you probably had sweatier hands than usual when you were handling the pieces that are chipping. hand grease can make acrylic primers not stick properly because they don't key into the plastic like a lacquer would. if you're using acrylic primer it's always a good idea to lightly sand the surface to give it more to grip onto and wash the pieces to get any grease off

Hell yes, but now I'm questioning if I'm color blind because I could've sworn that was orange and not yellow..

>>

in that case i don't know, sorry, i've never had chipping issues with mr surfacer. i've primed models that i assembled with sweaty and greasy hands with lacquer mr surfacer and it's always been fine, where when i used to use acrylics it would have fucked up the adhesion

Supposedly it's actually named after a position in a sport (american football I think?) that is more of an all-rounder, but I can't find any english confirmation of such a position existing so there's a non-zero chance it's based on a japanese misconception from the 80s.
Anyway Sniper, Sniper Custom and Sniper II absolutely are snipers, it's just that the latter two are also general ace-use units that can get the most value out of these specs and mobility required for sniping in MS combat.
As a side note, allegedly they're also both designed as improvements to the GM Sniper that really was just a basic bitch Ground GM with minimal modifications exactly because that didn't work all that great. The difference between Custom and II is what RGM-79 line they're based on, other than that they are largely unrelated and were actually deployed around the same time, if anything Sniper II might have appeared a little earlier.

What kind of story are you trying to tell? Severe grime and decay like that is appropriate for a unit that's been in the hands of a militia or guerilla group for many years of service, but not something maintained by any sort of professional.

Less is More. Think about the following before you start weathering
>1) Where is the unit stationed/where is it seeing action the most?
>2) What areas of the mech are going to get beat up the most, and how much of the mech is still intact?
>3) What kind of elements/parts of the environment are going to be impacting the mech?
>4) How big is the mech?
But most important of all
>5) What's the story behind the mech being weathered?
You already put some thought into #2 by putting most of the weathering into the legs, but it's really just randomly smeared all over the place. Things like dirt are only really going to be caked up at spots where dirt is constantly going to be hitting the mech, so places like feet or maybe knee pads if it's kneeling down a lot (ie a Sniper).

Take my Desert GM for example. Most of the dirt/sand is only at the edges of the feet while the brunt of the weathering comes from paint chipping on the edges done via sponging black/silver paint, primarily on places that are going to get a lot of contact.

On a more recent model I did more of the same, though I went more heavy with the weathering since the idea was that this tank had seen a ton of action to the point where the treads were caked up with mud. Some light airbrushing along raised areas to create the look of built up dirt and more paint chipping around various edges help create that same effect.

oh i assumed it was all plastic, if this is the case and that's resin and you didn't wash it then yeah that's definitely it. lacquer doesn't key into urethane the same as it does with styrenes so you have to prep the surface similarly as for acrylic primers on plastic: lightly sand the surface and wash off any grease, and like that other anon said 99% of the time resin comes with grease (mould release agent) out of the box. with resin you usually want to dump the whole kit into a tub of washing up liquid or degreaser overnight (or alternatively, in an ultrasonic cleaner for a bit) before you do anything with it and a lot of people also give it a second wash after doing whatever work on it before painting it

How viable are brush on topcoats? I'm without a spray booth and outdoor humidity will be over 50% for many months. I've heard the vallejo varnish are meant to be airbrushed so not sure if I need to thin them (and if so, with what) to be brushed on.

No I'm cutting slowly away from the main piece then after its off cutting the nubs like I see in all of the tutorials I've seen. I'm not sure whats causing those crazy marks, but I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that I'm using too much force on the second cut, but I don't know if that's actually the case or maybe I still have alot of plastic left on before i make the final cut against the piece itself.

You get a single bladed nipper instead of xurons that's capable of actually flushcutting in the first place. If you're leaving nubs like that, you need an entire other pass with a knife or some sanding implement to clean them up. Looks real bad.

Got myself MG MK-II and what happened was pretty sad. Left few pieces on my shelf and above it was another, shorter shelf. Once I left there my gaming controller and during some shuffling, I hit the controller, which fell on shelf below, one with gunpla parts and hit couple head parts, smashing them into multiple pieces. Pretty much lost whole head and piece of an arm. Only recently I have finally been able to get my hands on new parts and will be working on redoing the whole model. Got to finish bazooka and fins for my nu before that.

its kinda great and not, its a 2004 kit, so huge effort required to make it good, but its still kinda shit. you have to do a lot to make it good.

1.) dont expect the MG black Rick Dias to be reprinted, the Quatro Rick Dias has all the parts needed to build the ordinary Rick Dias, you just have to paint it
2.) the nub placement is kinda good, there's not much noticable nub marks because the nubs are located in very edges of the plastic.
3.)disappointing inner frame, its like building a RE 1/100 kit
4.)while it can hold the bazooka, it cannot hold the beam pistols. the beam pistols have a huge latch that is used to connect it so it can hang on the back, because of this, the latch gets in the way of the arm,
5.)its one of the cheapest MGs and kinda still look good for its time

I used to have these double-bladed nippers. They’re fine for first cuts and doable on flush cuts. The white stress spots are fairly common due to the nature of double-bladed nippers crushing the nub instead of slicing like a single-bladed nipper. The stress spots seem a bit large though. Make sure to cut across the thinner part. That’s the only thing I can think of, since you’re already cutting far then bit by bit.

Is there anyone else who actually prefers Reborn One Hundred and Full Mechanics to MGs? They look the exact same in terms of surface detail but they don't have the retarded inner frame that you're never gonna see and weird articulation and gimmicks that only matter if you play with them. The only thing that matters is how the model looks, like how early RGs are all good because they look good. I'm ok if the MG line dies off if 1/100 lives on in these two. But it's criminal that Re/100 is dead and FM releases have slowed to a crawl.

>>
>>22695636
Unironically why though?

Like I get wanting nothing but the best out of Bandai, but the entire purpose of these lines is that cutting out the inner frame would lower the prices and increase sales, making more obscure designs more economical to make kits out of. And as far as features go, the inner frame is by far the least important to get removed because you can't even see it. The model still looks the same which is the entire purpose. And anyway, most of the MGs have basic bitch barebones inner frames that are a farcry from the old days of the MG Ball ver Ka or MG Acguy.

>entire purpose of these lines is that cutting out the inner frame would lower the prices
problem is that it doesn't really, there's very little price difference between FM Aerial and MG Barbatos for an example
>>
Where's Pbandai Canada
>>
>>22695656
MG Barbatos was released in 2019 for 4500 JPY (28 dollars), which is the equivalent of 30 USD in 2023. FM Aerial was released in 2023 for 3800 yen which is 24 dollars usd. So basically 6 bucks cheaper. Hard to go lower than 24 bucks for a 1/100 too.

>>
>>22695661
not really, it's still more or less the same price range. It's not a seriously cheaper alternative, so when MG Aerial comes out it is likely to target the same price point and by extension not be too much more intricate. And if that is the case why would people buy it when they already have the FM?
The solution would be giving the MG more pizazz in some form, but that equals higher price point and depending on the situation and other releases an expensive MG might not be sufficiently profitable at a time where they'd like to release MG Aerial.
>>
>>22695661

>The solution would be giving the MG more pizazz in some form, but that equals higher price point and depending on the situation and other releases an expensive MG might not be sufficiently profitable at a time where they'd like to release MG Aerial.
I think this is where they were trying to go with the MGEX line. Trying to transform MGs into something more expensive with a lot more detail.
>>22695670
That's burgermutt prices. You are not the target audience.

Also worth noting that it's a margins thing. They probably have models and estimates that show the x number of sales they'd get at 30 bucks is less profitable than the y number of sales at 24 bucks.
>>
>>22695675
Pointy tweezers won't be helpful like that to you. Pointy tweezers will fall head first on your thigh and stab you. Do not trust pointy tweezers.
>>
>>22695680
Thing is that MGEX is limited to only the absolute cream of the crop so far and meant as a big event that only happens every few years, not a regular line like MG.
>>
If you could choose 1 mecha designer and remove all of their work, and everything it influenced, from history, who would you pick?
>>
>>22695685
Well it’s not like we’re getting many normal MGs anyway. There’s only like a couple more MGs that have been released than MGEX since they started coming out.
>>
>>22695690
None. Even ones that I generally don't like (Washio and Akutsu) have made some good designs I like a lot at one point or another.
>>
>>22695685
I am led to believe that the MGEX line is only made when a suit has reached a sales quota so far it has only been the Unicorn and the Freedom.
>>
>>22695695
>sales quota is what means we'll get an MGEX
So that means we should be getting an RX-78-2 or Nu Gundam or something like that. I really hope that's not the case because that's the much shallow fucking reasoning I have ever heard.
>We sold so many of this kit that we made it again, even more expensive, for you to pay us more money again!
>>
>>22695699
What else do you expect them to do? Invest tons of R&D and make an expensive version of a suit that won't sell?
>>
>>22695695
it's hard to figure out a pattern out of two releases but so far they've also had existing MGs that were somewhat aged but not completely antediluvian, hence a significantly higher-price kit for fans of it rather than 2.0/similar branding to replace the old one. By that logic Exia may be next but it's impossible to really predict Bandai.
>>22695699
RX-78-2 3.0 was virtually a MGEX and fulfills the same role. Nu is not impossible but it might step on Ver Ka's toes since that's already a comparatively high-end MG.
>>
>>22695700
Yes, yes I do. If they can spend tons of money making stupid shit like the F90 A-Z why the hell can't they make other cool robots?
>>
>>22695713
P-Bandai is the domain of stupid shit and MGEX requires incomparably more engineering than something like that, and it's retail
For all we know the MGEX line might be dead anyway since Unicorn and SF both flopped hard
>>
>>22695715
Pbandai has proven itself to be whatever bandai wants it to be. Such as releasing the Psycho Doga, and two (three?) robots from G Gundam on there. Regardless, I expect more from this small family business that only had 50 dollars in profits last year.
>>
>>22695717
>Such as releasing the Psycho Doga, and two (three?) robots from G Gundam on there.
Yeah, stupid shit that makes no sense retail and that they can sell as made to order products. Literally what P-Bandai is meant for. So whatever obscure suit from a single page of a spinoff manga nobody has ever heard of you want to get a high end kit of will be going on there, and not in a retail line.

You should've gotten into the hobby about 20-30 years ago then during the peak of garage kits where niche designs could get incredibly high quality kits in expensive limited print runs. Now everything needs mass market appeal to be worth making.

Just did my first ever Gunpla, MG RX-93 Nu Gundam Ver. Ka
I know it was probably a bit dumb to start on a MG before I was familiar with how to do things, but I think it came out well enough.
Just went through the guide, and that'll certainly help with a few of my problem spots (Didn't think to double-cut the Sprue for example).
Only question I really have is how do you deal with the plastic nubs on the fingers specifically? I had to leave some on because they just kept on popping out of their sockets instead of staying in the hand when I tried.
(Also I did get the weapons / fin funnels / stand complete but the pics I took were garbage)

>they just kept on popping out of their sockets instead of staying in the hand when I tried.
You trim the clean up the nubs before assembly not after
>>
>>22696210
I did it while the hand was the only piece I was working on.
The hand "Skeleton" in the kit is one piece, with the palm and fingers all pre-attached.
Granted, I did that piece late at night on my first day building so I probably just did it tired, but still, gave up on a few of the fingers after trouble.
But yeah, even a bonehead like me wouldn't try to clean a piece up after attaching it to the build.

Buy sanding sponge with different gradients, like 240/400/800/1000/2000/2400 and just rub those numbs anon. With 240/400 sand it slightly, don't use too much force and then sand surface after taking numbs off with higher grade to polish it more.
