I'm watching Kamen Rider Black right now, and I have to say, coming straight from the original series, I can't help but find Kotaro a little dull as a protagonist. Both Ichimonji and Takeshi Hongo were more charismatic, and they also had jobs and hobbies, which made them feel more believable and relatable. Kotaro, at least up to episode 12, doesn't have either. He just exists. Unlike the other two, it doesn't feel like he has a life outside of the events we are shown. The way he stumbles onto the plot feels forced more often than not as well.Outside of him, I don't have a problem with the series. The cinematography is fantastic; I especially love the way they use lighting and shadow. It's such an atmospheric show (episode 5 is top-notch in this regard). As with any old Toku show, it's refreshing to watch the actors in actual locations. The suits look great, too, and I'm amazed at how well they hold up even in broad daylight (the iguana kaijin from episode 10 is probably the standout, the texture on that thing is insane). And the soundtrack is solid.
