I think what I would have done, with the benefit of hindsight, would be to split Zipp's role between Sunny and Sprout. Sunny was the ace detective in the movie, so it's weird she doesn't reprise that role in the series probably only didn't because Zipp's VA is more famous. Sunny is too optimistic and trusting so you'd have Sprout there to be suspicious of Misty. Every pony else thinks he's just racist, causing conflicts.
