I think it's mostly because I came into MLP already as a fan of Zelda which does that sort of thing all the time. Though like Zelda, If I were in charge I would have made G4 legends and myths in G5 rather than literal history. Over time G4 ended up with a few continuity errors and contradictory information. This would have been explained by the three tribes remembering things slightly differently. The Tree of Harmony has two different origin stories in G4, and it would have been amusing to me if the ponies were aware of both of them.

Events would be referenced differently between games and the audience is expected to go along with it because the idea is the story got changed as it was retold. For example, in Zelda II the towns are named for the sages that defeated Ganon, and in Ocarina of Time we meet those sages, but there is one missing, Kasuto , and Mido shows up as not a sage. This happens in real world legends too, where sometimes a character might get added in to later retellings. Though there's also the interpretation that Nintendo just ran out of time and budget and couldn't include the Wind Sage in the final game.
