The idea in the movie that gigantic schisms existed between the pony "races" was an obvious nod to U.S. race politics, and demolished the legacy of G4 (which put off a lot of G4 fans). In particular there is something about the faces of the G5 characters that is less attractive than the G4 designs. Also, the 3D designs and the inclusion of modern tech (cell phones) and social media culture (as in the pegasus capital city) detracted from the magic and charm of My Little Pony as a concept. It was not a good start for G5. The follow-on MYM and TYT were so bad on their own for all the reasons already mentioned in this thread, that G5 was doomed to failure. G5 will not be remembered fondly, except by a very small number of people. It's like Star Wars that way. Everyone remembers the original trilogy fondly, but few will remember the sequals fondly.
