What was the biggest band to have completely disappeared from public consciousness in present day?
>>
>>121461869
Creedence
>>
REM
>>
The Police still average huge numbers on streaming platforms. They definitely haven't lost consciousness, and my younger coworkers definitely know of a few of their songs.

ELP were a touring force on the level of Led Zeppelin in the 1970s but once the 80s hit they were irrelevant. Probably due to no significant hit singles and an overall 'nerdy' sound.

Pic rel is from when they played for 78,000 people at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1977.

artists in the 100 best selling of all-time outside of the top 1000 on Spotify, the list is from a few weeks ago:

Bing Crosby #2943
Barbra Streisand #2281
Kenny G #2200
Janet Jackson #1959
Deep Purple #1799
Carpenters #1592
Garth Brooks (this clown is only on Amazon Music, my guess is he would be #1575 or so in an all-platforms list)
Neil Diamond #1566
Genesis #1453
Andrea Bocelli #1401

Julio Iglesias #1312
Roberto Carlos #1264
Chicago #1263
Kenny Rogers #1255
Santana #1070
Prince #1069
Jimi Hendrix #1058
Eric Clapton #1022
Aretha Franklin #1020

Their second album was a hit too. Is It Any Wonder got a ton of airplay at the time.

Herman's Hermits (which I didn't even know were that big until this post: >>121465250 [so thanks to that dude because that is legit interesting])
Counting Crows (I forgot they even existed until this poster: >>121474532 reminded me lol)
Paul Whiteman (I'd almost bet money that not one single poster on /mu/ has even heard of him, but he was legit the biggest jazz band leader in the world when jazz was the biggest genre on earth, but now he's obscure even among jazz fans)

However, I'm going to have to disagree with ELP and Grand Funk Railroad. Most classic rock fans at least know who they are.

What about Everclear and Collective Soul
>>
>>121461869
ULTIMATE EXAMPLE:

Milli Vanilli

Seriously, they might have been the biggest musical act on the planet for like a year and now they might as well not even exist. Even other lip-synching acts like Boney M didn't vanish like they did.

Speaking of the early 90s, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were two of the biggest musicians alive for a year or so and I don't think either of them have ANY fans anymore.
>>
>>121475659
Collective Soul weren't THAT big and I don't even remember Everclear well enough so I'm not sure about them.
>>
>>121475663
>MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice

Kid 'n Play and Kris Kross were two other rappers that no one gives a fuck about anymore. Though Kris Kross is almost cheating because teen music acts never retain an audience.
>>
>>121475699
>teen music acts never retain an audience

Speaking of which, Silverchair is another example from grunge.
>>
>>121475709

Hey they got that Bionicle collaboration as their legacy, that's pretty good
>>
>>121461875
They still get steady airplay.
>>
>>121484816
wouldn't that put it in the top 15 of best selling albums of all time?
>>
>>121491884
it sold 34m and is 11th of all-time, I wouldn't say she disappeared though, two of her songs are still popular which is two more than Madonna
>>
Radiohead
They made In Rainbows which went #1 and it seemed like they were finally going to get that mainstream exposure then after 2008 they turned into some weird fucking hermit band or something and release albums randomly every 8 years now that no one cares about anymore

do you think radiohead were some underground band before in rainbows?
>>
>>121480694
More of a cult band really. They were never mainstream despite getting a lot of airplay/tv/festival time. But ask any lower middle class Bong chick under 40 and they revere Welch, she was the 00s Kate Bush. So I'd put them in the Artic monkeys tier, A list indie band with strong, loyal following.

This. There's some sort of weird corporate memory holing going on for any rock music from the 2000's that wasn't Linkin Park or the White Stripes.

Sunk his own legacy and permanence in the public eye in the internet era by being too much of a litigious faggot

>>121494548
To be fair a lot of the UK ones had one or two very strong lead singles and then a shitton of filler. Quality control of 00s indie rock was awful. Fratellis, Dandy Warhols, Franz Ferdinand, Art Brut, Futureheads and the like all started strong and then sunk due to too much filler on follow-up albums and mushy 00s production stripping the tonality out of their music into digital washy mush. And then you had absolute trash toward the end of the 00s like Pigeon Detectives souring a generation of UK zoomers on guitar music altogether for the next decade. Only ones who largely beat it were Maximo Park who still break the UK top 10 regularly because they took a few years off around 2010 when they realised their third album was falling into the same trap and came back refreshed. Aside from their most recent which was recorded in pieces under covid lockdown, their production/engineering has always been much more careful than the rest too and that plays a big part in it imo. Strong cult following to this day especially in Germany.

Yeah Streets didnt do much in the US. Dry Your Eyes is the only track of theirs I remember hearing on the radio
>>
>>121480648
Phoenix had 2 big hits essentially - 1901 and Listzomania

They're also French, which is kind of a separate thing from the UK/US industry, and with the exception of Daft Punk you rarely see French acts cross over big time in the Anglosphere

Ultimate example:
Bay City Rollers

They sold 120 million records. Now tell me if you ever heard of this band until I mentioned them let alone name anything they did
>>
>>121496871
I couldn't name any song but I am aware of them as a British teeny bopper bubblegum 70s group. I'm also an autist about pop music minutia so I'm not a good representative of the public.

They just released their final album
>>
Mike Oldfield had one of the biggest selling albums of all time in Tubular Bells but a lot of people now probably never heard of him

And the Bay City Rollers were insanely popular for a short time in the late 70s but completely disappeared really quickly. Their actual level of success is hard to know because a lot of people say their label hid the real sales numbers to rip them off but according to some sources they sold well over 100 million albums.

That was their second wind. Their first album was a decent hit with the hipsters. Pretty much the same crowd that liked other forgotten groups like the Beta Band, Air, Tegan & Sara, etc. They also made a couple movie soundtracks back then (Shallow Hal and Lost in Translation).
They actually still play If I Ever Feel Better sometimes at my local CVS, of all places.
>>
>>121496190
Which is funny because their lead guitarist was the third member of the band that was immediate predecessor to Daft Punk
Someone had to have had a significant industry connection if somehow two of the only groups in France to ever break over the anglo barrier were in the same friend group
>>
>>121496151
I never heard any Streets track on US radio. Mike Skinner's voice and flow are... an acquired taste, to put it lightly, and with the very British subject matter and production, he didn't cross over. None of that early grime/garage/2-step scene made any impact in America.

Only correct answers. Shit from the 70s,80s and 90s still gets massive airplay and exposure. Most stuff from the 2000s goes unnoticed. That David Gray album is one of my favorites yet I don't hear it anywhere anymore. It got massive airplay when it came out. Everyone is still jerking themselves off about how great the 80s and 90s were. The 2000s were a forgotton decade

I mean full streams, not combining all songs, obviously people don't listen to Queen albums (except A Night At The Opera to some extent)
