im only like 2 songs in but this is already way more crunchy guitar playing than I've heard on any other Steely Dan release, the soloing is pretty impressive

Most overrated Steely Dan album. Still, about half the album is really solid (night by night, rikki, any major dude, a couple others).
>>
wow it's their single worst album (not a bad one but come on)
>>
>>121553418
maybe i just really like their music, I mostly listened to Aja, then Gaucho, then Cant buy a thrill, and now im getting into Pretzel Logic, probably royal scam next
>>
its really boring music to me because theres almost no edge there
>>
>>121553573
Ain't nothing wrong with that. Steely Dan had an amazing run of albums in the 70's. A lot of their fans put Pretzel Logic way up there as a favorite. I never understood it, but my personal favorite is Gaucho and I could never hear what made Aja so high regarded over everything else they've done. Steely Dan fans argue almost as much as Radiohead fans.
>>
Remove the East St Louis faggotry and this album is near perfect. Any Major Dude is their best song.
>>
>>121553802
>but my personal favorite is Gaucho
then maybe you should shut the fuck up

Overrated band by Zoom Zooms but Reelin in The Years is pretty cool. The Jazz Part is a bit dated and overbearing like how it is with Santana and hoe it is with Magma but Jazz as a genre as a whole has just aged so much worse than Funk or Soul have and so much worse than Classical Music has. That's not really Steely Dans Fault.

Possibly the worst take I’ve ever seen on this entire site.
>>
>>121557269
Which part? Jazz in general or Steely Dan being overrated? I do hope you don't think Steely Dan is real Jazz lol.
>>
>>121553802
legit cant fathom how someone could not get Aja being the best and then go and say Gaucho, primo contrarian
>>
>>121553647
The lyrics are rather edgy.
>>
>>121557453
not him but singling out reelin in the years as a standout track
also jazz is such a wide genre, it's like saying rock sounds dated and posting the monkees or something
>>
>>121557518
boomer edgy
>>
Definitely more of a fan album, than an accessible album, and many tourists only care about Rikki, but Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Barrytown, and East St. Louis Toddle Loo are definitely worth sticking around for.
>>
>>121557550
So you don't think going to college in the same town where the international headquarters of The Unification Church is located is edgy?
>>
just heard this album the other day on dad's new audiophile set up, fuckin loved it
>>
>>121553802
>my personal favorite is Gaucho and I could never hear what made Aja so high regarded over everything else they've done.
Well, you're a Steely Dan fan, so there's hope for you. One day you may find out why Aja is superior to Gaucho.
I shall keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
>>121557453
Yeah, I'm thinking that the Jazz elements in Steely Dan is just as real, and as based as Weather Report, Chick Corea, or Mahavishnu Orchestra.
>>121557510
I guess the anon we're both responding to was right about arguing like Radiohead fans, but I'm in agreement with you. (And Gaucho is a good album, but it AINT AJA!)

How has nobody talked about Charlie freak yet? Its one of their most depressing songs
>>
>>121557779
How about songs about killing somebody who caught you stealing, or a junkie who pawns his last piece of jewelry for a fix, and O.D.s?
Edgy enough for you now?

>The Royal Scam
If you like Pretzel Logic you are going to love TRS, Aja and Gaucho are great but I think TRS is where their rockist and jazz dork sides find the perfect balance.

Picking a favorite SD album or song is 90% personal taste though, I can definitely see the logic in any choice. This is the most cliche take in music history because it's true: the 70s SD run is ridiculously consistent and strong, album to album and even track to track there is zero fall off and zero filler
>>
>>121557871
not really no
>>
>>121553418
Yeah, I still prefer Two Against Nature over this one
>>
>>121561875
two against nature is almost their worst but i still think it edges out Pretzel Logic. Gaslighting Abbie is better than any PL song
>>
>>121564404
>>121561875
The highlights for me are Gaslighting Abbie, Jack of Speed and Cousin Dupree, the rest are ok but nothing special

Then what do YOU consider "Edgy"?
>>
>>121552928
prime example of frontloaded
>>
>>121557510
I never said it wasn't the best, you idgit galoot. I said it wasn't my favorite. But maybe I'm subconsciously being contrarian, who knows.
