What is the most you’d pay for a 1980 Tokai Telecaster in 90-95% condition? Early 1980s Japanese Fender copies are supposed to be as good as vintage Fenders compared to the actual Fenders being made at the time. There’s one locally for $1200. That seems like a lot but at the same time I’d pay the same for a MIJ Fender from the late 1980s. This is a proper 100% Japanese Tele copy that was so good that Fender began producing guitars in Japan.
Yeah resale value isn’t anything like an actual Fender but I don’t buy guitars to sell them later. I’ve wanted a Tele in this exact configuration and color for a while and here’s one right here only it’s a vintage Tokai and not a proper Fender.

On Reverb they’re all $1000-$1500 but that’s Reverb aka Rapeverb

Market is dependent on location, is your area a high cost of living area or low cost?
If high cost $1200 seems fair, if low cost $700-800

But are they worth that much when proper MIJ/CIJ Fenders aren’t that much more?
This is the exact Tele I’ve wanted for a long time only it isn’t an actual Fender and it has a six saddle bridge over a vintage three saddle (don’t really care too much about the bridge though). Finding Teles in this finish is very hard and here’s one right here, only it’s a Japanese Tokai from 1980 rather than a Japanese Fender from later than 1980.
Looking online outside of Reverb on like the Gear Page early 1980s Tokai Fender copies in similar shape go for around the same price as this guitar so maybe this is just the norm now.

Bro you might as well just buy a used american fender so that its the real deal and not some knock off. Guitar center usually stocks a shit ton of American production line fenders, so you can just go try them out in person to see if you like the playability of the specific model you're looking at on Reverb and then pull the plug on the Reverb sale if you like it. Later down the line you can upgrade the guitar with nicer pickups and hardware to make it more custom shop tier or vintage accurate (minus the nitro finish)

The only reason why I want this is because it’s as close to a rosewood Telecaster I can get without spending $4000 or more. The body and neck are factory finished to look just like a solid rosewood Telecaster. Yeah I know looks are gay but it looks identical to my dream Tele at a third of the cost (and I’m not paying $4000 for a fancy custom shop rosewood Tele simply because of artificial scarcity). I was going to just settle for an Olympic white Tele with a rosewood board but then I saw this. Yeah it’s a knockoff but it’s as close as I’ll ever get without buying a $4k limited edition artificially scarce custom shop or a five figure original.

There's two really big reasons why getting that Tokai is a bad idea:
1. Signature model guitars are fucking gay
2. Its not actual rosewood despite being called the "rosewood tele"

I know it can be hard to turn away from getting a guitar just for how it looks, but my god if you're going to be spending $1000+ on an instrument you're going to need to consider a million other factors than just its appearance such as neck profile, fretboard radius, etc.. If you absolutely have to have that specific finish, I would suggest financing a real rosewood tele for like 12 months so that you actually get an authentic version of the guitar you're interested in and not a pathetic knockoff with a fake ass finish that will not hold its value for shit.

I looked up "rosewood telecaster" on reverb and this was in the top results
https://reverb.com/item/81545810-2023-fender-custom-shop-rosewood-telecaster?bk=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJqdGkiOiIzNTQ4NGE2MC1jZGE3LTRhOTAtOWEyNS1kYzFiYTIwMDEyMTgiLCJpYXQiOjE3MTUxNDA3MTMsInVzZXJfaWQiOiIiLCJzZXNzaW9uX2lkIjoiYzVkYWUzYjktZTIwNi00M2E5LTk5YWYtNzdmMTkzYTU5MGQ1IiwiY29va2llX2lkIjoiMGUyMjZhM2ItMGNiNS00ZmE3LWE4NjUtNTM5MTJiY2JhNzhhIiwicHJvZHVjdF9pZCI6IjgxNTQ1ODEwIiwic291cmNlIjoiTk9ORSJ9.gmE9Dh3L9YU4goKG5Z_YUdIs9lbJALuUFTHKC2y9h4s

Anon, if you're getting a dream guitar, fucking pull the trigger on the real deal. 12 months of financing for that thing would probably cost you around $250-300 per month. That really isn't that bad in the big picture.

I'm not sure what "better" even means in this case. I've only ever been concerned with how the fretboard feels and how the guitar is intonated. The sound of a guitar come from the pickups, which can be swapped pretty easily, so I don't understand all the mysticism surrounding country or year of origin.

Gilmour entered a guitar shop and bought a fender, modded the shit out of it, played some insane solos and then was, you know, forced to sell it by his grumpy wife
If you're obsessing about whether your guitar is "better" in whatever marginal, subjective terms you mean by it, you are not going to make it
You're unconsciously trying to get your "investment" worth it, and have therefore deviated from the aim of making music: making music
Good news is, you can always wake up
Just pick up a Gibson (have some standards) and make it worthwhile
it will be sold by peanuts by your son second ex-wife anyway

>>121783652
Yes and no. I've owned both american production line fenders and currently own a custom shop tele. Custom shops have upgraded hardware and pickups, but that alone doesn't really justify a $2000 higher price compared to an american fender. Theres slightly more involvement with the finishing and relic process of the guitars, which can translate to a guitar that is more playable. I will say that my custom shop feels NICE, but my american strat feels nice too, just not as nice, and it would sound just as good as the custom shop if I were to upgrade the pickups. So, is the custom shop worth $2000 more dollars? No, but similar to every other hobby the price of an item will exponentially increase relative to tiny increases in quality once you get to the upper echelon value.

They're custom made based on your specifications. So you get to customize:
>the fretboard length and width
>type of wood
>wiring mods
>pick up mods (push-pull switch, s1 switch)
>pot mods
>pickup mods

You really only need this if you are a professional musician. CS guitars are also lighter than American made. Boomers love that.

>>121783663
I also have a vintage ii tele and I think even that is too much. I should have went with the elite line.
>>
>>121783935
>I also have a vintage ii tele and I think even that is too much. I should have went with the elite line.
huh what
>>
>>121783882
I’ve been eyeballing a Tele to replace an old MIM Tele I sold off years ago and at a local shop they’ve got an old used American Standard (really at the top of my list 2bh because it’s the cheapest and I like how it plays), current production American Pro IIs and Vintage IIs, and then a custom shop Tele for $3000. It’s in near mint shape and belonged to the owner of the shop who’s only selling it because he want to fund more vintage guitars. I have no perceivable need for a custom shop but the thought of a custom shop for like a grand and a half off of what they are new makes me curious but I’m sure it’s just because it’s cheaper than normal and not because I actually need it. It plays really nice and honestly I love it but do I really love it more than the used American Standard that is nearly two grand less? Not really or at least not enough that I feel justifies the extra cash.
>>
>>121784011
oh I guess they're called the professional ii line now, not elite series.
>>
>>121784032
Just depends on what you value. I personally love how vintage accurate the nitro finish and hardware components are on the custom shops. Also every custom shop I've messed with ends up having amazing fretwork and being the most playable guitar I've used. One thing to consider is that it would certainly hold its value way better over time. If those things don't really interest you, you could get the american tele and then drop some good money on Ron Ellis pickups to get the absolute best tone you could possibly hope for. The guy makes vintage accurate reproductions of the 50-60s era pickups
>>
>>121784011
>>121784062

The EQ is the problem. Widen the Qs on both bands and boost band 2 a little bit.

Use a high shelf going down to around 7k. Cut 1-2 db. You don’t need guitar up there.

Cut around 2k. That’s a really honky frequency. Maybe 3-5 db with the Q at 5.

Also try using a low shelf instead of a hpf. Guitars don’t have a lot of subs so the hpf is probably overkill.

I see sellers with ads that have been up for 5 years, wtf is the point of trying to squeeze every last dime out of something? Most sellers are like that too, they want to charge store prices when often times a real store blows it out for 10-15% off the tag price if it's been sitting too long on the stand.

Some of the best guitar solos of all time were recorded on these, and they're nothing special really. Hey I have a question. I picked up a bass guitar and an amplifier, and I practiced every now and then. But I just don't feel like playing the thing anymore. I haven't touched the thing for longer than 3 months. The sound of the bass guitar is the only thing that makes my hairs rise in a good way, and i'm not sure why I dropped it. Before I purchased the items I felt a surge of inspiration and wanted to pick it up asap, but now it's rotting on my wall. It's just a beginner bassguitar and now i don't really know how to pick it back up again. I feel like my gaming addiction tickles my neurons a bit more than playing the bass guitar and i'm not so ready to drop video games for the bass guitar

They sound flatter and have less highs. I like them and I like the spacing on classicals because it makes chords so much easier. They are just way easier to play than a dread or parlour. You won't come up with as many open string extensions or suspensions on them though. But writing an all barred song in a key that is a lot easier.

>>121789801
You’d be learning the chord tones across the neck and therefore the fretboard. So now instead of just playing the pentatonic scale you can outline the underlying chords.

So if the progression is G-Em-C-D, you can say “oh I want to play a repeating lick that hits notes 1,3,4, and 8 (octave) of each chord.” If you know the triads you can do this because you already know where each of these notes are on the neck. It would be unergonomic to do this in a pentatonic box.

Sorry for the link but mobiles not letting me post images.
https://www.jazz-guitar-licks.com/blog/infographics/major-triads-guitar-cheat-sheet.html
>>
>>121789546
You could try to better outline the chord changes. Also I think it would help to work on your rhythm vocabulary, try practicing triplets, quintuplets etc

>>121789819
This is what I said earlier. Just get the legit custom shop rosewood tele. $3100 on Reverb really isn’t that bad considering you’re getting a really nice finish, amazing fretwork, 9.5” fretboard radius, all the original vintage spec hardware, and top of the line pickups. If you buy a knock off you will always be yearning for the real thing. People in the old days would literally finance a real Gibson. Guitars have always been expensive

So, anyone got good resources on learning Spanish/brazilian guitar?

That’s the one. I came close last night but decided to sleep on it. It’s a little weird that he only has one pic for the whole listing, you’d think he’d take some decent pics to show condition instead of just saying “trust me bro”. It’s just a lot of guitar for just playing in my house alone when all my other guitars are just fine at doing that but at the same time it’s one I’ve wanted since I was a teenager. Plus it’s a total meme that does nothing special than any other nice American or Japanese Tele than look different and be heavier. I appreciate my dad’s offer but I hate accepting charity from my parents so I never do it, I am (mostly) a grown ass 30 year old property owning man who is just hebrew levels of frugal

You can always rationalize your way out of buying a nice guitar, but what matters is how that guitar makes you feel. I’ve owned American production line fenders and currently own a custom shop tele and custom shop es335. The custom shops feel amazing and inspire me to play on the daily. For you, you may not need that higher tier of guitar to be inspired daily, but at least for me it helps and I know that I have two lifelong guitars I will never replace. Seems like a lot of money now, but it really isn’t in the big picture

i love ugly girls with hot bodies. would you happen to be a telecaster player? you see, i have a theory that us tele guys enjoy both teles and butterface girls because they share the same attributes.
you see, the telecaster is perhaps somewhat ugly and utilitarian, but it just sounds incredible and is loads of fun.
an ugly face hot body girl is utilitarian because what really matters is the body and ther personality. the face is just there so she can communicate and function as a human. the sex with a butterface girl is like nothing else on earth. butterface girls are so much more fun. laidback, chill, down to fuck like whores always. they will do everything i want and they are also loyal.

You better buy it to play Ted Greene style jazz, only acceptable reason for a Tele

Get a Charvel instead, they’re fenders but good

My Harley Benton guitar arrived!
My shitplank has an acoustic sister now.
Also upgraded my basement setup with a classy foldable chair.

I have no idea. The action is very low, almost as low as my electric.

In theοry I am scared of the single bridge , because I enjoy massive gain stages and play around with combinations.
I need more research and try them at a store now that I decided on a brand.
Maybe even try other Strats too. Some douchey PRS or other.
>>121792551
Are you implying I should do a Squier instead of a Fender?

My only electric is a Fender American Standard Stratocaster in HSS. It's nice, I can get some bluesy tones in the single coil neck and some pop punk tones with the humbucker bridge.

I've been eyeing a telecaster, would that be the move for more tones? I'm hoping I could get some more twangy, country, and emo tones with it. I feel like my stratocaster sucks for cleans.

Specifically eyeing this guitar.

>>121793503
frankly you sound like a tool and i doubt you could handle a telecaster.

Acoustics without cutaways is the traditional, centuries old shape.
>>
>>121792551
The RV6 will work fine for that. It's a solid reverb.

>>121793233
there is no reason for 99% of players to go that high on the neck.

>>121793503
the tele would work for those genres. I almost always pick my tele over my strat. The humbers are nice though

You can get a cheap squier for around $300 and then upgrade the pickups to something pretty nice and still be under 600.

Maybe a dumb question, but the only tone variation I'd get is with the single coil bridge on the telecaster, right? Would the single coil neck on a tele and a strat sound basically the same?

I don't really get if anything else about the two types of guitars change the tone.

I still don't really comprehend how guitar tones work. Like you can run it through heavy amp effects and layers and layers of effects and EQ, yet the guitar itself is gonna drastically change the tone?

I'm surprised there isn't just guitar modeling software. Where I can make my guitar sound like another guitar.

You can master the guitar without the cutaway.

Get a Charvel dk24 HSS. It’s an objectively better Stratocaster.

it cuts bass response. Literally no reason to be up there. I'm so tired of anons who have no idea what they're talking about spewing misinformation.

>the only tone variation I'd get is with the single coil bridge on the telecaster, right? Would the single coil neck on a tele and a strat sound basically the same?
The bridge pickup on the tele is placed at a different angle than the bridge pickup on the strat so that will change the tone. It's also on a metal plate which makes it brighter. The neck pickup on the tele has a metal cover that changes the tone. I believe it's also a little smaller than the strat neck pickup. So you're right in assuming that identical pickups would sound the same, but the differences in position and the metal parts change the sound. IMO the best rock sound is the tele in the middle position (both pickups on). The strat cant do that without modding because of the middle pickup.

>Like you can run it through heavy amp effects and layers and layers of effects and EQ, yet the guitar itself is gonna drastically change the tone?
The pickup is actually a mic. It adds EQ, distortion, and compression. Once those effects are applied, they can't be taken off (EQ can to some extent, but you are never going to un-eq brightness from a tele's bridge pickup). In theory, a pickup with a perfectly flat EQ and unlimited headroom could be made to sound like any guitar with the appropriate effects, but that's just not practical.

>I'm surprised there isn't just guitar modeling software. Where I can make my guitar sound like another guitar.
There is guitar match, but it's not that great because of the aforementioned reasons. You can try it for free though.

People talk about how "playable" a guitar is and how it helps beginners stick with the instrument. Truth is, just don't be a pussy. If a little extra challenge causes you to quit guitar, then it wasn't meant to be.
