What's the best way to learn to read music?

There's not too much to it, learn the notation in a day and it's gonna take you like a year to be able to sight read.

Do you mean sightreading or just reading music? They are different things. For the first one you use those beginner method books, for the second one you force yourself to play through a bunch of easy pieces without memorizing them.
You were also supposed to learn how to read and play music simultaneously.
