I'm 37. I've been listening to Gorillaz since I was 12/13, which makes me the exact demographic Gorillaz was made for when the first album dropped. Here are my ratings.

Gorillaz (2001): 10/10
G-Sides (2002): 3/10
Laika Come Home (2002): 6.3/10
Demon Days (2005): 10/10
D-Sides (2007): 8.5/10
The Fall (2010): 2.5/10
Plastic Beach (2010): 5.5/10
Humanz (2017): 5.7/10
The Now Now (2018): 5.9/10
Cracker Island (2023): 6.5/10
The Mountain (2026): 7/10

I'm hoping they make a full return to form before Jamie and Damon croak. I don't understand the intention of the bloated, meandering collaborations that showed up in the middle of their career, and I doubt Damon does either. Either way, that's all. Have a nice penis day.

It's very reminiscent of early Gorillaz. If it had the context of a good album behind it, like as a secret track, it would become a lot more elevated. On it's own, it's just kind of annoying. It has its moments, though, and those moments are strong.

I disagree with the rating for Plastic beach, however it was definitely the point where the project started to lose sight of it's original thesis. The band began to be treated like regular cartoons going on wacky adventures rather than actual musicians and it was the beginning of Damon transforming the band into a synth pop group with rap features.
>>
>>129674418
Precisely. It felt like (insert rapper) ft. Damon Albarn, The Band. I will admit my rating of Plastic Beach is more emotionally driven, but there's no reason to feature Snoop Dogg on anything, even if it's symbolic. If you're trying to make a point about consumerism, going full retard probably isn't the answer.

Fuck Gorillaz, honestly. I mean, they are not even Gorillas. All 4 of them canonically are humans, except for the one Frankenstein guy I guess. Like, where do these jokers get off, calling themselves the Gorillas? I say, they are yesterday's news, them and their "Plastic Beach" and "Cropper Island" and stuff. Now, Nic Sequeira, he is the Gen Z Asexual KING that has everyone in a tailspin. Nobody can take their eyes off him, and he is not even a cartoon character. He has the requisite "panache" that the Gorilla band simply does not. To wit:

I literally draw for a living. Not that you have to be an artist to enjoy a cartoon band, but I just find it funny. You're also dumb and have a stupid head.

>>129677794
Could you really appreciate Gorillaz at 6 though? I'm saying ST dropped when I was 12.

Your bias towards Demon Days makes more sense given your age, but it still makes me want to punch you in the face for rating ST a 7.

And how do you get 8 out of The Fall? Most of it sounds like it was made by a 10 year old on an ipad, which of course it was made on an ipad by a guy who was just dicking around on an ipad. Revolving Doors is the only good song.

>>129678853
19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) is excellent, but come on, dude. We have Latin Simone on the frigging ST. Most of the shit sounds like total throwaways/halfbaked ideas. You're a rape-man.

>>129679018
Good. Have some toast.

>>129680034
D-Sides is criminally good, yes. Damn near perfect. I just find Plastic Beach wildly disappointing because like most of Gorillaz albums that fall short, it seems to me that it happens because Damon often uses Gorillaz a vessel to sell a actual Gorillaz songs and then slap on some collaborations to meet a quote to and ensure it can be called an album. Gorillaz as a brand will sell, so why not. Plastic Beach is not awful, but it's not a superb album. The good songs are REALLY good.

>>129680086
Probably true, but Moon Cave is an absolute banger. The juice is still there.

>It probably should've been called The Fall Demos though. Only Damon could get away with passing this off as an album.

idk, it was released for free on their website, so i think it was fair, anyone could listen to the whole thing for free and if you happened to like it you could pay to download it and then later on it was released physically. From the beginning it was made clear it wasn't a proper album.
>>

>>129684008
Ghost Train and 19-2000 Souldchild Remix are my favorite songs on the album. I'm weighting the album as a whole. If G-Sides consisted of Ghost Train, 19-2000 Souldchild Remix, and maybe 12D3, then I'd give it like a 4.5 to a 5. I'd treat it like a nice little EP.

On a random note, I'm extremely disappointed that the closest thing to Damon screaming on a Gorillaz song is on Punk from ST. He should scream or shout more. I want a Gorillaz album where Damon is doing death metal growls or something. GIVE ME A SCREAM, DAMON.

M1A1, Punk, Ghost Train, We Are Happy Landfill, The Swagga. Damon can belt out some good yells, he should do some more high energy rock and roll tracks with Gorillaz.
>>
>>129686582
He really should. It just seems like a waste with the imagery of the band being very punk to begin with, and it would be a nice twist since it's so rare.

Nah, I listened to Demon Days about a week ago and it still goes hard. Gorillaz doesn't make shit that hits like O Green World, Dirty Harry, Every Planet We Reach Is Dead or El Manana anymore.
>>
Thoughts on Noodle?
>>
>>129686676
Momentary Bliss kinda gave us that, though Damon was mostly relegated to backing vocals, would be cool to hear him front and center on a track like that.
>>
>>129688571
Very funny how the Gorillaz fandom is comprised of queer teens who get offended by fucking anything and yet Jamie has avoided any backlash from naming the asian character Noodle and drawing her with yellow skin and squinty eyes for the first two album cycles. Also lets not forget Murdoc having an iron cross tattoo, wearing a Nazi uniform, having a confederate flag in his room, calling 2D a faggot, and all the artwork featuring Noodle and the rising sun flag. Gorillaz has done a crazy good job at memory holing their edgy imagery that would almost definitely get their retarded young fanbase mad at them.
>>
>>129690209
I don't think literally anyone cares

>>
>>129690209
You're a bit of a dumb twat. Bands are more often than not comprised of conflicting personalities. The end result being the Gorillaz sound is what makes that beautiful. None of the characters are particularly fond of one another until they get older. What they have in common is a desire to make music.

And Gorillaz has a multigenerational demographic, with their strongest segment being 25-34, so stop pretending like they're not a serious group, you crochety loser.
>>
>>129673033

The Gorillaz are a combination of comics/anime and music. One of them is a cartoonist and the other one is a beat maker. This actually should be a whole lot more common than it is and I'm not sure why it isn't. But that's basically the key to their mystique.

On the left, you have Jamie Hewitt, the artist behind the cartoons. On the right, you have Damon Albarn, the musician behind the tunes. They’re the founders of Gorillaz, as a project that was meant to signal a departure from Albarn’s other musical endeavor, Blur.

Blur was one of the major contenders in the Britpop era of the 90s, a time in music where alternative rock was becoming a bit more “mainstream” via band feuds, poppier/more-ballady sounds, and of course, pretty boys. It remains somewhat controversial for how it made British alternative rock, at the time, more linear.

If you’re truly of an older generation of reader, you might remember the Blur vs. Oasis feud that seemingly went on forever. I still have no idea whether the feuding was genuine or just a publicity stunt, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is, you can really hear the musical origins of Gorillaz through Blur.

Of course, others have been involved on this project on and off. For instance, Remi Kabaka Jr., the voice of Russel, is now a music producer for the band as well as a voice actor. And during the production of the first album, Damon invited the help of Dan “the Automator” Nakamura, a hip-hop producer. And of course, pretty much all the rap beats were provided by Del the Funky Homosapien. Therefore, the real Gorillaz is an amalgamation of all kinds of talented artists and musicians. But at its core, it’s just Jamie and Damon: two guys from the UK with prolific artistic backgrounds, that you might not even recognize while walking down the street. In a way, that's perfect right?

Gorillaz is gay as fuck to me now. It’s painful to have such a wonderful nostalgic connection shattered, and they were a huge part of my internal world in my teens, but Damon’s part in the project especially is the victim of the Alan Moore phenomenon where there’s initial subtlety and nuance in a project’s political commentary, but they retroactively try to strip it away over time because they missed their most opportune moment to scream (in Damon’s case) “BOB DYLAN WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG AND THE FUCKING CAPITALISTS ARE TRYING TO TURN YOU INTO A ROBOT”
