I mean all of his stuff is great but I think the most interesting is his 1971 album Odyssey of Iska. It's an experimental third stream big band album. The opener to Side B (After Love, Emptiness) is considered one of the best things he ever made, if not THE very best.

Yeah records were probably half as expensive 15 years ago. Luckily I probably had over half my collection at that point. You can still find good obscure 70s and 80s stuff for decently cheap if you know where to look. And Blue Note has been reissuing a lot of its catalog for somewhat affordable prices.

Absolutely. I started thrifting in middle school and have over 2000. As far as jazz specifically here's a few highlights:

>Herbie Hancock
>Chick Corea
>Jan Hammer
>Jeff Lorber

>Nina Simone

>Oregon
>Gato Barbieri
>Jean Luc Ponty
>Zappa
>Spyro Gyra

People have turned chartposting into a "look at me! I can fit in, too!" sorta game, it's not about the music anymore. The jazz fusion and jazz guitar ones especially.
>>
What I've learned today:
>"Jasm" derives from or is a variant of the slang term "jism" or "gism", which the Historical Dictionary of American Slang dates to 1842 and defines as "spirit; energy; spunk." "Jism" also means semen or sperm, the meaning that predominates today, making "jism" a taboo word. Consistent with that etymology, the jazz composer Eubie Blake (1887–1983), when interviewed by a woman for Yale's Oral History of American Music project, refused to use the word "jazz" because he thought it was uncouth.[3] Deepening the nexus among these words is the fact that "spunk" is also a slang term for semen and that "spunk"—like jism/jasm—also means spirit, energy, or courage (for example: "She showed a lot of spunk").
>mfw
Does that mean that Jazz is just some sort of elaborate musical gooning?

Anyway, to stay on topic I am currently listening to Alex Sipiagin's Reverberations, a really fun and accessible modern jazz album : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj8GiT8siDE.
>>
>>131123732

>>
>>131123618
Flowcharts don't really work well on jazz since you're supposed to be following styles of improv that are more accurately designated by eras, coasts, labels, etc., not genres. Genre flowcharts are best suited for pop/rock.
>>
>>131123732
i dont like modern jazz because it all sounds like they are reading charts while they play it.
>>
I think people should have open minds about jazz and let the music come into their lives as they find records and cds in the world.
It's not easy anymore, I realize this. But someone could go to my local used record store, flip through the cds and start a decent collection. You might not find Kind of Blue, or Blue Train. But you might get ESP, Ballads and some random Art Blakey cd.
That's way more sovl than a fucking flowchart.

Try antique stores, hospice shops and estate sales. These are less likely to be picked over by normies.
I found $2 Bill Evans last year at a hospice shop.
Pawn shops can sometimes have gold. They are going to cater to boomer rock and big names and more likely to undervalue obscure stuff.
Facebook marketplace is good to monitor as well. Stay in touch with people.

Is it my inner chud messing with me or is this really a thing? This is clearly an intentional way of rearranging the word "Messengers", out of many possibilities, as this obviously does not follow the standard English rules of hyphenation, and not just some kind of unfortunate coincidence nor pareidolia on my part.
The creation of an album cover was, especially in the pre-digital or pre-IA era, a time consuming craft and I cannot believe no one at Blue Note saw that at any point of its inception and went "Hm, maybe we should slightly alter the formatting." especially during the wider historical context of the civil rights movement when this album came out in 56.
So my theory is that a disgruntled graphic designer found a way to weasel the no-no word inside that cover to get back at those loathed melanin-rich individuals with which he was forced to work in order to pay his rent.

Anybody ever notice how there’s this push to rename jazz “Black American Music” (BAM) and white people playing jazz is seen as problematic and cultural appropriation? And jazz clubs and labels will advertise themselves as “Black Owned”.

Yet you will find all these think pieces about how important it is to get more racial diversity in classical music and orchestras, etc. And if anybody even so much as suggested renaming classical music “White European Music” or celebrated being a “white owned” concert venue, they would be crucified on the cross of antiracism?

There seems to be a pretty obvious double standard there to me.

jazz is black american music, but its also a big tent and has broad, inclusive roots. like gumbo. as to black owned and white owned, regarsless of the truth of what youre saying (like give us a factual example), there's no need to post the rule, but there is to post the exception. This is obvious, is obvious in all similar examples, and your just playing ignorant and contrary to be racist, most likely.

I live in Manhattan and go see live jazz on average about once a week. I took this picture of Miguel Zenon at Smalls.

How's the scene actually like? I see a lot of people online saying New York jazz scene is just a bunch of expensive clubs aimed at tourists that will waste hundreds for the experience

There is definitely some of that but it would be an exaggeration to say the scene is “just” that. And even the expensive touristy places do usually have very good groups and good sound. With the exception of The Blue Note, which is expensive, touristy, has bad sound, and only has good groups maybe half the time.

But if you go off the beaten path there are quite a few good places to see world class players for fairly cheaply.

Here’s a rundown of my favorites

>Smalls
It’s expensive if you buy a ticket in advance, especially on the weekends, but if you know how you can get a walk-in ticket. I go there fairly often and the staff knows me and most of the time they don’t charge me the cover. It’s typically very good bands, sometimes world class bands and a fun and intimate atmosphere, though most of the crowd is definitely tourists.

>Village Vanguard
Kind of expensive and definitely touristy but very worth it if it’s a group you want to see. Awesome sound and atmosphere. The bands play there all week so they are usually very prepared and professional. No chatter about setlists or what key to play something in in between tunes.

>Cellar Dog
This is basically a college bar and pool hall but with great live jazz. Cover is either $5 or $10 and you can stay and hear as many sets as you want. It’s a lot of the same players that play at Smalls, but in a more informal atmosphere. Only downside is that the bar sometimes gets very loud, since most people aren’t there to actually hear the music.

>Bar Bayeux
This one is kind of way out in Brooklyn, so not a lot of tourists. There’s no cover, just a suggested tip for the band. But they have really good music there, sometimes a little out there and free but usually good. Great craft cocktails and a fun intimate atmosphere. It’s definitely a hangout for musicians who live in Brooklyn so there will usually be other great players in the audience just watching.

Lesser favorites

>Jazz Gallery
Medium expensive, but a nice space. They usually have very good players, but it’s usually the players more indulgent, experimental projects so the music can be hit or miss.

>Mezzrow
Sister club to Smalls, across the avenue. It’s kind of expensive if you want to sit at a table near the front, and if you stand back at the bar it’s kind of hard to hear and see the music. It’s typically smaller groups, trios or duets. Lots of singers. Music is always good but very polite and kind of caters to tourists and people who don’t listen to a lot of jazz.

>Fiction
No cover, just a two drink minimum. This one is mostly up-and-coming players, guys you won’t have ever heard of, but usually they are pretty good and sometimes very good. Just kind of a pain to get to in Brooklyn.

>Ornithology
Cool place, just wayyyy out in Brooklyn. Annoying for me to get to so I never go. But I think it’s just a $20 cover and very good bands play there. I’d probably go often if it wasn’t so annoying to get there.

>Close Up
Pretty new club. Tickets are like $20-30. Cool setting. The bands that play here definitely lean into freer and weirder music. Somehow this place takes nerdy guys playing freeish jazz and makes it cool. Kind of a pain for me to get to otherwise I’d go more.

Very nice, anon. If i lived in Manhattan i'd be constantly going to every free improv performance, all those Relative Pitch label artists, i'd be seeing them all perform.

Others

>Dizzy’s
Honestly a very cool atmosphere and they usually have pretty good bands but stupidly expensive. Very touristy. It’s worth going to once. Or if you’re visiting, it’s worth splurging to see a good band.

>Smoke
Pretty good bands usually. Sometimes a little hard bop nostalgia-y but usually good nonetheless. Just very expensive and kind of touristy. Or not even touristy necessarily, but the crowd is often rich fancy black Harlem society types.

>The Django
Good bands typically, just expensive and touristy. Kind of fun “Paris underground” theme to the club. Worth going to once or to see a band you don’t want to miss.

>Zinc
Bands are hit or miss. Occasionally some really good groups though and kind of a cool room. It’s just usually more than I want to pay.

>Blue Note
I tell people not to go here. It’s a lot of neo-soul hip hop jazz fusion type bands typically. Occasionally they have some really good bands but even then, the sound is bad and the room is bad, you will be packed in like a sardine. It’s very expensive and extremely touristy. I only go if someone from out of town really wants to and I can’t dissuade them.

There are some new ones that have opened in the past couple years that I haven’t been to yet. RIP the 55 Bar which was one of the best in the city, but shut down.

I’m not huge into free improv. Sometimes free and out playing can be really cool but I like it best when it’s in the context of some composed structures.

Been listening to Keith Jarrett for years but just now getting into the trio stuff with Peacock and DeJohnette, feel like I’ll be listening to a good amount of this the next few weeks.

Wondering if anyone has good recs for records or groups that sound similar to what Miles Davis was doing in the Filles de Kilimanjaro/ Silent Way sessions? Really love that loose area between the post-bop and full-on electric funk.

How is this one? I always pass it over because it look so generic. Deep down inside I always know this is a mistake because its Trane. If this was John Klemmer or something it would be a hard pass.
I need someone to sell me on it.

Interesting notes. I have been to Smalls, The Village Vanguard and Blue Note. I could see Smalls being really cool if it was a group you really liked but I didn’t like the players all that much on the night I went. The Vanguard is indeed pretty awesome despite the hype. I didn’t think the blue note was all the bad but it wasn’t amazing. I don’t remember it being all that expensive but I was visiting New York and so I guess I was just expecting to spend a lot to see live jazz anyway.

I am intrigued by this Coltrane pick, never heard of it before, noted

>>131196260
My first impression has been "this is really really good" and I don't listen to free jazz, more of a hard-bop-to-fusion guy
>>
Herbie Hancock is one of the most legendary and respected jazz pianists of all time and somehow still underrated. The stuff he was playing 60 years ago still sounds surprising and hip today. His lines are ridiculously influential, not only just for all pianists who came after him but for so many of the great horn players too. I think Mike Brecker got almost as much of his sound from Herbie as he did from Coltrane, Shorter, and Henderson.
>>
>>131197989
people who underrate herbie probably didnt listen to the records
>>
>>131197989
>>131199010
I think he's underrated in that for a long time his late 70s through late 80s output was generally disliked. And I'm not going to debate the merits of those albums but I do think this "slump" gave the impression he fell off which colors people's opinion of him.

>but I do think this "slump" gave the impression he fell off
Because he did fall off.
He had a streak of great albums in the 60s and 70s, and then when the 80s came around he slowly but surely ran out of ideas and started making bad music.
That applies to almost every artist, jazz or otherwise.
I'm one of the biggest Herbie fans out there but if you think I'm gonna defend shit like Lite Me Up or Perfect Machine you're out of your mind.
Outside of Mr. Hands his 80s period was a trainwreck.

Three, trombones.
>>
>>131207010
they dont look too happy to be playing trombone
>>
>>131206784
Not really defending is 80s output but Rockit was a major hit and was very influential.
And for many years Mr Hands was hated. Or at least it was super common to find I used record bins. Everything else would sell instantly while Hands languished. But now its beloved. Maybe someday some wiseass on 4chan will sincerely say Monster or Magic Windows is underrated.
>>
I know people here would kill me but,

who are the best guitar players of the 21st century and best jazz guitar songs?
>>
>>131208188
Peter Bernstein
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Adam Rogers
Jonathan Kreisberg
Lage Lund
Julian Lage
Gilad Hekselman
Pat Metheny honestly even though he’s been around since the 70s

seconding adam rogers and adding mary halvorson and jakob bro

Fair. I thought about including Bro but honestly his stuff has never grabbed me. Forgot about Halvorson but she should be included. Miles Okazaki too probably.

Rogers is kinda underrated
>>
>>131208188
John McLaughlin has been the GOAT since the 70s
>>
>>131208188
Julian Lage.
