I’d say it was around 96, when shit started to dry up as far as innovation went. Millennials didn’t create anything musically, everything AND I mean everything millennials made was a retread of Gen x and boomer musical ideas. Look at 2000s indie (half of which was actually made by Gen xers) it’s not just music. It’s movies, it’s tv, comic books, everything. Video Games last a little longer (I’d say gaming died around 2016 or so)

It's nice to slow down for a bit and chill and give those scenes that maybe didn't get enough time back then their time to shine again, like the whole indie sleaze thing even if the name is gay whatever. When I was in high school in the late 90s and very very early 2000s, most music people I knew were already like “yeah grunge was the last cool thing” we thought Nu Metal sucked. Mind you, there was still stuff happening in the underground, brutal death metal, metallic hardcore, shit like that, but it wasn’t really new. Most of that shit had been around since the early 90s.

It's surprising because Gen Z invented quite specific timely art with the backrooms, and I've been seeing something adjacent to that called folk valley or named similar too, that whole "uncanny" spaces genre. Why don't they translate this empty, lifeless, artifical aesthetic to music? OPN would have layed a kind of foundation with R+7 for an explosion of that uncanny ambient genre that would probably hit hard nowadays. And they don't need instruments, we have AI and a kind of genre that utilizes Ai in creative ways (not just suno) would be timely too. Maybe Gen alpha will pick up that mission.
