But what I actually do in practice when I'm trying to improvise on the spot is a just use the pentatonic shapes and add notes to them. But if I'm playing specific metal songs I try to keep close to the solos as they are written and just use whatever it takes to get it done. But I think it's nice to have those shapes down as a frame of reference. I don't write much original music but I do like improvising leads.
