Tell me your favourite loco and I'll rate it/base my opinion of you from it/foam at the mouth about it if it's cool or I haven't seen it yet. Pictured is mine, class 170 (in ScotRail saltire blue livery) they're kinda clunky and old but god do they ever make the best engine noise in the world, you aren't a railfan unless you've heard one thunder out of Glasgow central station. (Can you tell I'm a foamer for this thing?)
>>
>>1980928
Modern Railways magazine keeps raving about this DMU. I might have used it years ago if it was the same ones that briefly ran on the Goblin line shortly before electrification. I remember it having a loud gearbox, could hear it shifting. Only other time I've seen one is in Leicester when I went there just to ride on the 222. It was headed to Birmingham but I didn't get on it.

170s have taken over the Leicester to Lincoln route, and I think most of the other EMR regional services are now either 170s or 158s. Sure, 170s are not the best units, but they're a upgrade from the 156s and (god forbid) 153s that used to handle the majority of services. Cross Country also operate 170s through Leicester and Nottingham but I rarely use them apart from the Leicester to Birmingham service.

TL;DR - they're ok I guess

Baureihe 103. built in the 1970s and able to go up to 200km/h. the beige color gives me a hard on.

>I might have used it years ago if it was the same ones that briefly ran on the Goblin line shortly before electrification.
You're thinking of the 172s, which use a different gearbox from the 170s.
>>
>>1980928
I've just noticed that OP has gotten some details wrong. I can't tell if it's deliberate but it's one of those things that you'd get correct if you really cared about this shit.
>class 170
A multiple unit, not a locomotive.
>Glasgow central
They've never ran into Glasgow Central unless it's for a diverted service.
>>
>>1981004
Oh yeah that reminds me I saw one last month while driving near Sleaford.
>>1981142
Yeah that's the one. Shame they got rid of them, they were cute.
>>
>>1981145
I got a model class 42 for my 12th birthday, that's how autistic I am, yet even I got the 170 mixed up with this >>1981142 There's always someone who knows more about trains than you, let's just be welcoming to new hobbyists.
>>
>>1981203
Model railways is the type of hobby which is enjoyed more by the young but affordable only to the old, so it's not exactly that autistic, not that you'd need to be in order to enjoy railways.
I know you only said it in jest but it is amusing how you said "you aren't a railfan unless" in the OP and then proceed to imply that gatekeeping is a bad thing here.
>>
Anyway I never answered OP's question.

Steam: Schools class, powerful for their size and attractive. I was going to say the Castle class for the same reasons but I can't look at that locomotive without thinking of Harry Potter any more.

Diesel: Class 52. I like them because they were Different (TM)

Electric: Most are soulless, maybe the class 91.

DMU: I've been into the class 150 recently, mainly due to Silverlink nostalgia. I still remember the hour-late train, the diesel fumes, the rumbling, filth covered train, fearing for my life at a desolate station in Hackney. Back then rail had SOUL. Honourable mention, the 101. Never used them but remember hearing about their withdrawal. They were ancient by then, real workhorses.

EMU: Being in London I've rode mostly EMUs so this one is tough. I gotta give it to the 317. Those trains were spacious, comfy and fast. Didn't look bad either.
>>
>>1981204
I'm not OP.
>>
>>1981138
Ok I retract my statement; electric locos are not soulless!

I can't fathom why you'd come to such a positive conclusion about these boring noisy lumps. Uncomfortable seats, and an excess of resonance in the cabin are the main things I remember about the passenger experience. I wouldn't say they are awful, but I was never happy to see one. In fact, I would always wish to myself that it was a 158, and was pleased whenever one showed up instead. Those were quieter, had better seats, a smoother ride and bigger windows too.

Both paled in comparison to the marvel of a quiet carriage being pulled by a 125 HST, though. It was like floating. Then, at your destination, you could admire the beast that pulled you along.
A turbostar might as well have been a horse and cart compared to that.

The air conditioning on 170s is patchy at best and since you can't open the windows they can turn into a greenhouse in summer.

Nice to be able to work from the back cab when it's crammed full though.

The last great in-house BR loco in it's best livery. Everything about the 60 and sectorisation liveries was simple but subtly appealing. Nothing over the top or overstated just clean simplicity but incredibly well made and badly treated and forgotten by the privatised companies despite it's quality.

The class 93 is probably my favourite new UK locomotive. It's a shame Stadler didn't use this body shell when they made the 68 and 88.

Mine is a tough choice between DR1A and TEP70. IMHO DR1A is more aesthetic, but cant beat the turbine whine on TEP70.

They were both designed by Vossloh Espania (formerly Alstom), who were sold to Stadler in 2015 in the middle of 68 production and at the start of 88 production, hence why they don't look like Stadlers.
