I want to strangle every single big buck roadie fred and especially every single downhill-bike-in-a-park pomp who rides around just to do chainsaw sounds with their bicycle's very very expensive hub. "Give way, the asshole is coming!". Like, if you wanna make motorcycle sounds, get an actual motorcycle. A Harley actually sounds cool. A freewheeling bicycle sounds supremely annoying, and also means you are a weak shit who is not pedalling. Fuck you, go ride into a river.
>>
just turn off the 'tism
>>
counterpoint, when around normies and NPCs, loud freehub buzzing are the least hated way to make your presence known so you can pass without some idiot flinging himself into your spokes or getting spooked and crashing. maybe if you live in japan bell ringing is socially acceptable but here people will act like you just shot at them with a gun

p.s. if you weren't so damm slow I wouldn't have to make ratchet sounds to not spook you into crashing noob ;-) but this is not a race so don't worry *downshifts and leaves you in the dust*

cry about it, bitch

Bell ringing is acceptable everywhere if you need to make your prescense known for safety. And unlike a freehub, you can just not use it if you can go around them safely. They will act surprised and look for the source of the sound, that is entirely expected and even desirable behaviour.
Loud freehub is also percieved as being shot with a gun. Except it's a minigun.
>>2031789
Oh, the pomps will overtake you in silent mode too, because they have to pedal to speed up (duh). And only after they've brushed handlebars with you and cut you off, they will engage the gatling again just to rub it in. It's a license to be annoying, and they are using it to the max.
Coincidentally, I've seen one of these who had no front brake on a train. I asked him why, he said "aesthetics bro, look how clean it looks!".

anon, onyx freehubs are some of the most expensive you can get

>>
>>2031794
I might've screwed up my terminology, but you got my point.
These Onyx guys are cool. I wonder why we don't see more hubs like that. Maybe it's because they don't loudly announce your very expensive purchase to the plebs around you.
>>
>>2031796
more complicated to service, weight, production cost, and the silencing of coasting noise is more of a side effect of zero-engagement rather than something anybody was actually asking for. ratcheting is one of the more innocuous sounds next to brake squeal and whatever else, and getting triggered by the sound of a ratchet is weird and you are weird

also somewhere I read that there is an esoteric situation where you want at least a couple of degrees of free play for the drivetrain to work properly but I don't remember the explanation
>>
I hate the sound. my old bikes have a new shimano freewheel and an old Shimano 105 freehub, and both are silent. the freehub moreso.
if I need to pass someone, I have a bell on one bike but mostly I just say "I'm comin' around you!" and then the people understand that I'm going to pass them on the left, since I'm in North America.
saying "on your left" to a normie pedestrian just confuses them and they're just as likely to go left.
using your buzz saw sound effects is super gay. a freehub functions perfectly without the sound, getting a loud one to signal your presence just annoys everyone and signals that you're too autistic to actually interact with the general public.
>>
>>2031808
>I'm comin' around you!
affected folksy talk is cringe
>>
>>2031808
For me? it's "On yer left"
or just whizzing by depending on the situation.
I go slow around peds, medium-slow for runners, and medium speed around cyclists.
I learned a while ago I need to be very careful passing people.

Yup, old shimano hubs are the best for quiet freehubs, and of course freewheels can be quiet if you use oil or grease.
Heck, you can quiet ratchet systems down with grease as well. DT swiss sells specific grease for that.

HEY KIDDO WATCH OUT, BIG BOYS COMING THRU
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz
Nothing personel little one.

Sound of a regular bicycle ratchet is fine. But sound of an expensive ratchet is both much higher pitch and much higher volume.

i remeber buying a buzzy freewheel for my bmx as a kid
i guess some people dont grow up
>>
>>2031810
well, I live in the south, I'm not really affecting anything. it works every time, whereas on your left doesn't, so folksy wins
>>
cyclists are the most weak minded bitchy faggots I know.
>>
>>2031841
what's an "expensive ratchet" because on 4chan it seems like anything that costs more than $50 is overpriced MAMIL poseur shit for racers, but on the other hand anything less than $25000 is poverty loser tier so we need numbers here thanks
>>
My ZIPPS cost $150 used and they are insanely obnoxious

it's training me to never coast
>>
>>2031882
>never coast because your hubs are so loud
It's A MINDSET
>>
>>2031782
>A Harley actually sounds cool.
Opinions discarded.
>>
>>2031882
the other solution i found was riding with poeple who had even worse chinacarbon angry bees than my zipps then i couldn't even hear it
>>
>>2031886
Stand next to one. You can feel the burble in your chest. It's not a pleasant sound, but it's certainly a cool sound. Bees are less pleasant and infinitely less cool.
>>
>>2031882
I have zipps too and I don't think they're that loud. they're a little louder than some generic garbage wheels I had back in the day on a cheap bike, they're about the same as my old mavics, and they are a hell of a lot quieter than chris bling. I think a lot of the complaining about loud hubs is just overactive imaginations coupled with the usual unracer seethe about nice things
>>
>>2031893
this is the only way a loud motor should sound like
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4wk8v5MwU7Q
harleys just sound like they're broken, nothing cool about that
>>
Silent hubs are the best hubs. Fancy ones reverberate the hollow plastic "carbon" tubes in an unpleasant way

>old Shimano 105 freehub

I have a 2019 era 105 freehub and I love it. It's not silent but it's super quiet.

I ride with a friendly sounding bell to not scare people. But I ride on the road so most of the time it's just to say hi to people I know
