I will not be reaching much when i say that tipping works fine and people understand this custom in (i wanna say all but let's say most) countries except USA, where it too some strange bastardised form over time.

It's caused by using tipping as way to make your employees earn living, unwillingness to pay them more or inability to pay them proper wage, the employees don't understanding or not wanting to hear that tipping is and always was just an extra small amount of cash to perhaps show gratitude for good service or create service "relationship" if you are regular somewhere. Tipping is not meant to make your living. Demanding tipping 10%15%20% sometimes 50% is out of touch. It's the US tipping culture and the jobs tied to it most closely that are perpetuating this behaviour, keeping it alive, making it worse.

Mix of these and i don't know what else because i don't know how this mess gotten to be. But again most of the world understands the custom of tipping for what it is.

So look, the whole world uses tipping as a reward for for bit above service, if you got something lil extra from the people jumping around you. They don't have to do magic or perform resurrection, just if they are attentive, observant of your needs, being polite. That behaviour earns service workers small tip.
It is still non-mandatory to do in the rest of the world as it should because the workers should and often do get fucking payed enough.

Problem starts when because of s a system/culture service worker believes that they are owned some amount of extra for their job no matter what. Then you have attempted murder over 15 dolla pizza that did not received 20% tip or whatever ridiculous number they believe are entitled to.
2 dolla for 15 dolla pizza is more than enough.
It's something, it's not 0. You do 20-50 deliveries a day congrats you got some extra cash, it will not make for living that is how tips always were tho.

I would say most of the world tips.
I am from Europe, travelled many counties here, tipping is either not forced in any way or not expected, people still do tip various sums from their own will. So far nobody shouted me, demanded more or stabbed me for my tips and they are not 15% .
I can only speak from my experience of course, what i've seen, done, what i talked about with others..

EU doesn't force tipping, thats the difference you tip because you want to but its not expected.
US/Canada its basically expected that you tip 15% barring being literally assaulted by the waiter/waitress or finding fecal matter in your food. Its a toxic practice that i wish would stop but unfortunately people just look like stingy assholes if you tell people to stop tipping.

Was just discussing this the other day with someone. I pay about 1-2 euros for an espresso in Italy, and about $5 USD here for one, plus $1-2 tip.
In the EU what is considered a livable wage should get you a small studio flat in an older building, food for yourself, maybe a moped, basic cell phone, various stuff like that, eating out occasionally for modest meals, etc.
In the US what is considered a livable wage is supposed to get you at least a 1 bedroom apartment, a large American car, iPhone, food for yourself and your family, and some other odds and ends.

Wildly different expectations of what "livable" is between Europe and the US.
