Ordered a super miata shift knob but it doesn’t have the laser etched SUPER MIATA logo.

One third of the ND oem shift knob weight, makes shifting feel more mechanical and effortless, but shape will take some getting used to.

Post your shifters bros.

Other non suv Mazda owners welcome

Yes. Just go test drive one and form your own opinion. Nothing good can come of further "discussion" because the only thing retards on this website know how to do is to devolve into irrelevant benchracing with numbers on paper when the MX5's primary engineering goal is to feel good to drive, not to win straight line races with obviously faster cars.

They've got one in the full kit for $1300, but it appears to be the NB2 model anyway. The fittings on the ends of the hoses and evaporator core changed to use a block type expansion valve instead of the older sensing bulb type. If I could find an NB2 in a junkyard I could grab its AC lines and condenser (yes, that changed too) for much cheaper than getting that full kit and shipping it across the atlantic.

Been using redline 75w90NS while in my possession. Could have been run with low/shit oil. It's also 20 years old too I guess.

All the fucking Giken units are out of stock globally because of superior nippon supply chain issues. Vendors want me to pay up front for what could be out of stock for a minimum of 3 months, which is fair, but also minimum 3 months and some wont even tell me how long the queue is.

Crown/pinion look brand new and I did the oil every xmas.

Gikens are supposed to be the be-all, end-all in terms of durability with track use and have the highest level of adjustments with plates/cams/springs etc.
The problem with the TorSens is that you can no longer buy the spur or worm gears. Not from Mazda and not from the original manufacturer, they don't give two shits. They are also getting extremely rare, minimum 2kNZD for a torsen and they're all 2nd hand, people here want $800 for a fucking open diff.
Seems Mazdas stock of new old units ran out late 2000's and though there are a few new units kicking around, they're just as expensive as the Giken if not more because of spec miata rules.
Springing a couple more notes for a Giken seemed a reasonable upgrade in performance, durability and rebuildability.

>>
>>27566416
Oh look, it's the retarded thing every late 2000s car did- making the HVAC controls and radio one unit so replacing the radio with something else is a nightmare, if it's even possible at all. I had a dual climate control 2006 Outback XT and that was by far the worst fucking thing about the car. They weren't just in the same housing, it was one PCB. Nobody makes an aftermarket solution to keep the HVAC controls except for a rare expensive JDM one that is the wrong color to match the interior and doesn't fit properly because it's for a RHD and the dash curves around the driver.
>>
>>27566584
And also of course you can't convert down to the manual 3 knob climate controls from the lower trim levels which do have cheap dash kits without pulling the dash, swapping the entire HVAC box out, and doing some rewiring.

Maybe everyone else would stop feeling insecure about not having popup lights, but here we are.
The reality is that the NA chassis is such a wobbly piece of shit that the main buying point for a hardtop is that it stiffens the chassis and reduces cowl shake.
The early manuals had a radiator so thin they often overheated on stock power, I think it was 14mm or something and that's behind a condenser.
The 6" diffs explode with stock power.
THe engine was taken from a car designed to mount transverse and so coolant re-route kits are a thing so you don't cook the 4th cylinder.
The hot air heater core always has block-temp water going through it and the trans tunnel gets hot as fuck.
There's a coolant outlet that's blocked off from factory that sits right under your CAS which has an o-ring that goes hard and cracks, leaking over this rubber which then swells and tears, leaking out coolant. It does this downstream of 3 temp sensors, such that the ECU and dash gauges start reading block air temperature and it just fuggin explodes and reports all temps still nominal.

Half of the (admittedly huge) aftermarket following for these cars is to bandaid these issues. Want a stiffer chassis? Seam weld the entire chassis, drill 50 holes in your floorpan and mount big sturdy frame covers.
I think it is that only in spite of this that NA snobs are snobby.

11k kms, so far so good, once I couldn’t get into 3rd. Cammisa shills the nc2 heavily but I just cannot live with the bloatface, but engine has a higher throttle cut off.

Miata is fantastic to learn manual on. My gen 1 86 was like driving a Mazda 2 off idle I always needed throttle input or a super long clutch release to prevent it from stalling. Also it’s easy mode since you get hill stop assist. Kinda miss how much of a god you feel like being able to do hill starts without handbrake though.

it's usually not bad on the 2000 cars. there is usually an aftermarket bezel that will accomodate the OEM knobs. it's a real problem in the later 2010s cars that integrate a bunch of car functions into the radio. swapping in an aftermarket head unit gets way harder or impossible.

Been driving my NA for years now and finally test drove an ND2. I'm honestly a little dumbfounded after driving it because basically everything about it was worse than my NA.

>steering was extremely numb and light
>shifter was less mechanical
>throttle response was worse
>body roll was worse
>no induction note at all. Once top was down I couldn't hear the engine
>rev hang in 1-2 and to a lesser extent 2-3. In the NA I can bang off shifts but in the ND I felt like I was always waiting

Bottom line I just couldn't feel or hear anything and felt way less confident pushing it than my NA. Do mods save this car?

>no induction note at all
Get a hot air filter and take off hood sound deadening.

>>
>>27574125
What does rev hang have to do with which gear you’re in? It’s more a gearing issue isn’t it? For reference I came from a gt86 and i still shift too slow sometimes to where the engine rpm is lower than it should be when I go into gear.

Induction note can be fixed by making your own sound tube, but desu when I drove an NA a few years back it didn’t seem super obvious to me either.

My nd2 has kpc and bilsteins is like to test the normal nds because I always thought body roll made driving more entertaining.

I remember the shifter in theNA being a lighter throw which is why I got the Felton shift knob, much more mechanical when you remove the 360g shift knob that comes stock with nd.

I got to drive a 2021 Mazda 3 (manual) on loner for a while and I can't stop thinking about how nice it was. Shortly after I got to rent a Corolla of the same year and it's laughable how bad that car is.
The Corolla's suspension was so bad it felt broken and unsafe to drive. The 3 felt planted and agile.
The interior of the 3 was also really high quality and comfy with good sound insulation. Corolla was all the cheapest plastics and rattled. Lots of road noise.

It's a polymetal grey metallic mazda3 hatch carbon edition. It's stock because im lazy and haven't done anything to it yet. The carbon edition has the red seats, but the black leather dash, which I think is the best combo. I'd get a miata but im too tall I can't fit in them without modifications. So I got what I consider to be the next best thing. You probably don't care, but im going to post this anyway.

Have an ND3 on order, will run it in on the Bridgestone Potenzas over the summer. Just get a feel for it stock. Next year though i plan on getting better summer tires. Thing is, i’m not sure if it’s actually needed, will form my own opinion after i get some miles, but until then was curious, what tires do you guys like for the fourth gen MX-5? I will not track the car, i just want to enjoy mountain twisties and road trips with some spirited but safe driving. Slide the back on occasion, maybe a couple of donuts in the parking lot. Nothing crazy. The stock tires seemed pretty slippery on the test drive, maybe Mazda was deliberate in choosing them. I am considering good Michelins, like Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Pilot Sport 4S, but i’m worried the improved grip will spoil the fun, if that makes sense. I know the car is no drift machine, but i still want to enjoy rear wheel drive shenanigans. Anyone here done any tire upgrades? Also curious about a wheel upgrade. Mine does not have the BBS wheels, just the stock 17 alloys. They might grow on me in person, in photos they look kinda sus. The one i testdrove had the nd2 wheels which look better imo. Anyway weight, strength, rigidity and looks would be important to me, not stance. I actually want something with close to stock offset and fitment. Don’t want them sticking out, throwing dirt and attracting cops if i can’t get them homologated (guess the Europoor country). Feel free to reply with general comments on rims and tires, also for other generations, especially if you also have 4x100 lugs, i believe the NA and NB also came that way but i might be wrong. I have a feeling there is some cross-shopping possible. Actually, was curious if i could run like some older gen 16s with serious winter tires, just swap them out every December, swap them back after the snow all melts.

It's right in the middle of two of its oem wheel options weight wise. No shit it can't compete weight wise with aftermarket options, but those cost significantly more since MSM owners usually can't even pay people to take those wheels off their hands since they're such a shit option for NA/NB.

My ND has been making high pitches scraping noises on the left side recently.
Only when I go faster than like 20 km/h. And the noise goes away when I apply the brakes.

I'm suspecting it might be rust, or maybe a small stone that got trapped somewhere. Do you see anything bad here? It only has 13,000 km.

I just realized my nd doesn’t have fender lights am I retarded or are the aftermarket’s supposed to be put where the panels are? Or did it change after a certain model year? Another autistic thing is the gtrs comes with black side mirror caps and I think all rfs are body colour matched

Yeah I do homeoffice almost every day, and especially in winter I haven't felt like going outside much. So I only drove it like once every 2 weeks and it was sitting outside the whole time.
Before this, it was the demonstration car of a dealership, where it also sat ourside all day and only got driven when someone wanted a demonstration
>>
>>27590232
They're basically the same underneath, but the NB is *technically* the better car. NB's have some added chassis strengthening, and an extra 10hp thanks to VICS, but the extra weight from said strengthening cancels out the bump in power, so in practice they're really no faster than the NA. The chassis strengthening also makes NB's rot more than NA's, so you have to check not only the standard MX5 rust areas like sills and arches, but ALSO the front chassis legs. Interiors on NB's are nicer than NA's, but they don't really have any more creature comforts, they just look and feel a tad better. NB's are also cheaper than NA's.

TL;DR, NB is "better" practically, but just get which ever one you like aesthetically, they're basically the same car.

They depend on the market. North American market cars have side markers in the bumper. Other markets don't have that.
>>
>>27590476
The NB trunk is also more usable if dailying is a concern. The battery and spare were moved below the trunk floor so they're not hogging a solid third of the trunk space anymore. I'm also fond of the NB's much more simple cam and crank sensor setup that replaced the finicky and expensive CAS. I also don't quite agree that the NB1 isn't any faster than an NA8 (and it's definitely significantly faster than an NA6!), magazine tests at the time got around a half second faster 0-60 with NB1s vs the NA8, and having driven both, the midrange torque the NB1 has feels better too. The best way I've heard it put is that the NB is the better car, but the NA is the better Miata as the NA does have more charm appearance wise and weighs a touch less out of the box, but the NB performs better in most areas and is easier to live with.

Power wise, this is why I say "in practice". I was at a track day with my 1.8 mk1 (late model with 133bhp), and it was no faster - and also no slower- than a couple of late model Mk2s in front of me. Only thing I can say is that my car is an import with the 4.3 diff, so maybe that gives me a bit of an edge over other late model mk1's, but still. I don't doubt that VICS cars have a marginal advantage in the mid range though, but I just didn't see it play out in the cars ahead of me.
>>
>>27591053
>>27592621
Thanks guys, I'll see if I can get the rotors grinded down by a lathe to remove the rust damage. They're still plenty thick so it's fine to remove a few millimeters to make them like new, and it's cheaper than getting them replaced completely. And I'll also swap the break pads. And then stop applying the parking brake every time
>>
>>27593363
>And then stop applying the parking brake every time
that damage comes from letting the car sit.
>>
>>27593625
Yeah but the parking brake seems to amplify the damage even more. I remember sometimes when I didn't drive in a while, the parking brake was actually rusted on and it broke free when I started driving.
Anyway I'll make it a habit to just drive to a car wash every 2 weeks, that should be enough to prevent the rust from coming back in the future.

Thinking of buying an ND3. I do get pretty annoyed with the wind noise in my NA at 70+mph. I did watch the Throttle House review and they say that the GT trim has a better padded soft top. Does anyone have experience with how much difference it really makes driving at highway speeds? I thought I was set on getting a club in crystal blue, but if the GT soft top really does make a big difference I might consider that in grey or white. The only ND I driven was a 2020 with BBR package
>>

Top up with the rf sounded kind of similar to soft top, but buffeting is way louder when the top is down compared to soft top with the top down.
Best bet for you is just go to a dealer with both soft top and rf then drive them back to back. I was deadset on rf till I drove one.

Amazing engine, possibly the only reliable thing FIAT has every produced. The sturdy little things are pretty commonly slapped with a 400 hp big turbo kit for the 500s but I am currently talking to a guy who just got a 300 hp stuffed turbo set up for his 124. I think I will prefer the mid range power band of the stuffed turbo rather than the big turbo powerband shoved up to redline.

So best of both worlds. Italian engine? Great. Especially the Abarth version. Japanese wiring harness and chassis? Just what you want.
The engine needs a lot of maintenance but it really can last a long long time. I was considering one but only autos were still being sold in my area. And it was too expensive. Generally it seems like they cucked themselves out of the European market with these. The Fiat 124 was underpowered compared to the US version, while the Abarth had poor marketing and was expensive. They should have styled it as an Alfa Romeo and people would have gone NUTS.

Do you think it's worth it? I just want a little RWD car that I can drive around corners really fast and break the rear end loose. And then fix it affordably. I don't need a fat hog car. Will I fit or am I just fucked.

Picrel is my body type.

It would be possible as the NA and NB share the same platform. Big welding job, but I've only seen people replace the recess with a flat floor to show off the diff. Exhaust probably won't be an issue as it runs along right side.

They just have more 500s sold, like a fuck ton more. So you have tons of people playing with them. The 500 actually has one of the largest aftermarkets of all modern cars out there. The 124 was only sold for a couple years.
>>
>>27601065
You'd have to drop the rear subframe on both an NA and NB (for room to work), cut both trunk floors out, and weld the NB one in the NA and paint to keep your welds from corroding. Not exactly a good babby's first welding job if you're not experienced with welding body panels.

Have a 6'3" friend who changed from a turbo NA with cut seat foam, to (2012?) STi when his second child was born. Misses his NA. That being said, NC is the roomiest of all Miata's. Do some research about how much headroom you'll gain by those mods, then sit in one and work it out.

>It's EPAS, you cannot do anything about this.

This is retarded. So any other deficiency like power/suspension/brakes you can remedy in the aftermarket. But steering you're just completely at the mercy of the manufacturers tuning despite it being essentially adjusting some sliders? What a crock of shit.

People tune ECUs and throttle mapping all the time. Why can't they do the same for EPS?

I have a fully specd ND from the second month of production and the new NDs price is more than double becuse of the electic junk Mazda cramps into the new NDs. No one is asking for fucking Alexa, TPMS, fancy stabilisation and hundreds of sensors.

>People tune ECUs and throttle mapping all the time. Why can't they do the same for EPS?
You probably *could*, but I don't think anyone is really offering this a service yet, so unless you're capable of diving into the hardware and reverse engineering all those 1's and 0's, you just have to put up with shitty steering.
>>
Is putting a F136 and F1 transmission into an NA that was destined for the junkyard considered saving or damning it?

There was a forum post awhile back about someone complaining about steering assist and pulling the fuse but the steering became too heavy probably due to the increased caster angle.

Fuel door on my 2017 MX-5. The rib in on the lock will unlock fine, but gets stuck trying to lock. Took it apart and lubed everything, but same issue. Any advice?
Even just the part number to order a full replacement would be helpful. Searching just gives the actual actuator itself, which seems to be okay.

I don't think it's jumping teeth. Retracting is completely fine. It's when it goes to lock that everything jams and nothing happens.

Probably mainly due to the infamous "multiair" engine's quirks.
These cars are often second cars that get driven infrequently.
Do this to the Fiata's engine and the car will refuse to start, because multiair replaces one of the camshafts with a hydraulic system that depressurises if left for many weeks. There is a way to bleed the air from it, but Fiat's own guidance involves trying to start it over and over (with breaks to not fry the starter motor) until it catches.
Also, in the UK at least, I heard they stopped selling it in 2019 because somehow this fancy engine still didn't meet emissions regulations.
>>
>>27598075
I have a theory that the Fiat's body is the actual ND design, and the Mazda's body is what they wanted to make the NC look like before they realised they were using RX8 parts - hence the ND having Mazda's previous smiley company face despite releasing in 2015.
I swear I saw the original iteration of what would become the ND design as a model in a line up with other NC designs that weren't used in a video somewhere.
>>
>>27610978
Surely thats because they're trying to haul a motor around as well as the steering.

Do miatas make a good daily? I might buy my grandpas 1990 MX-5, it is mint, garaged it’s whole life with only 83 thousand miles.
>>
>>27615123
wind noise sucks at 70+ mph and I'd never leave it anywhere I don't trust longer than an hour. also make sure that it's put back together properly when the crank pulley comes off since it's a short nose crank. other than those two things, go for it since you're never going to find a better one.
>>
>>27615123
I'm currently treating mine like a daily since I'm in between DDs. It's fine for commuting, adds a nice twist on what would typically be a dissociation simulator. If I had to drive in traffic or parked anywhere other than my office I would be a little more panicked about buying a new daily.
>>
>>27615123
I daily my NB just fine. The NB massaged the NA to be a bit more usable (namely in the layout of the trunk, changing from hydraulic to solid lifters, more power, and a cheaper and more reliable cam/crank position sensing system) but they're mostly the same car otherwise. It gets me to work and the store just fine and in relative comfort, and fits my work bag and two weeks' worth of groceries in the trunk. If anything the main drawback of dailying it isn't really its own fault- it's so small compared to everything else now you have to drive it very defensively the way you would a motorcycle, assuming nobody else can see you because they probably don't. Just the other day I was almost merged into by a retard in a crossover realizing they were going to miss their exit and jumping into it at the last second without making sure it was clear first, right where I was. Their belt line was as tall as my entire (stock ride height) miata is, so with me being neck and neck with them at the moment they started to change lanes, they literally could not see me at all.

Check the counterpart on the flap if it's damaged or not.

There is a H-bridge in the controller that flips the polarity to turn the DC motor left or right, but that works. That leaves the mechanism as a culprit. The parts number is B09556890.

>>27608900
There's nothing you can really do. A rollbar will cause head injuries if you smack your unprotected head into it, even if you put foam padding on it. When you drive something like a Miata you have to just accept the risk of getting btfo by a trugg. The car is decently safe, way more than my deathtrap NB, that's for sure
