Pic rel for $4.5k. 2006 179k miles, carfax showing regular dealer maintenance. I asked about the battery to see its the original or replacement, if replacement OEM or third party. Anything else?

I’ve never bought a car before. I was gonna drive it and test the AC. Not sure what else to do.

>Anything else?

Sounds like a decent price if it has a clean title. Check the underside for rust, test drive it with the radio off and listen to the noises it makes ideally you don't want to hear anything except a smooth running engine. Consider paying a mechanic to check it out for you or at the very least if its at a dealer ask them to plug an OBDII sensor into it so you can see if it has any error codes, if its from a private seller consider buying a cheap OBDII sensor off Amazon so you can check it yourself. If you do buy it have a mechanic you trust check it out for you to see if it needs anything done to it, a few repairs are to be expected.

Good luck.

Find out how much battery replacement costs because you can add that to the cost.
>>
>>27587596

If its a private seller you'll need them to go to the DMV with you to transfer the title. Its an easy process and costs like $50. If its at a dealer they'll do it for you; but they usually try to overcharge you for it, like $500 so ask them to include title and registration in the price.

Aftermarket hybrid batteries generally costs about $2K to $3K including installation labor but you need to find a specialist who does it. At 179K miles the battery probably still has some life left in it before he'll have to replace it.

>If its a private seller you'll need them to go to the DMV with you to transfer the title
huh? no you don't. you just need them to sign it over to you and also a bill of sale and then you bring that to the DMV yourself.
>>
>>27587596
Man that's a hard pass. Why would you buy this pile of crap?
>>
>>27587596
I'll find you a much better car for 4.5k. Hold on.
>>
>>27587710
Here you go. Get a 2010 ford fusion.

2017 chevy malibu

It's not that toyota prius is bad aside form them being inherently evil. It's just older ones are sorta shit once the battery is worn out, from what I understand.

2007 passat

A little old but decently low milage.

1982 ford f100

2010 Cadillac CTS

Another decently low milage ford focus. I think thw reason these are so affordable is becusse they're a little boring.. but that doesn't need to matter if you just want car to drive to work..

That will allow for income to buy a nicer car later if you want.
>>
To me these fiats are death traps but if you're hell bent on getting 40 mpg here ya go. I'd be afraid to drive it on an interstate next to tractor trailer.
>>
>>27587745
>I think thw reason these are so affordable is becusse they're a little boring
It's because it's a Ford.
An equivalent Corolla or Civic would be double that price.
>>
>>27587798
I bet these ford's focus still have pretty good drivetrains in them. If you need a no BS commuter csr are were poor this would be great.. I'd rather habe that than a used up pris anyway. The prius is also an excellent commuter car if you can find one that's not all used up. I know many prius owners really like their cars. I get the impression toyota prius is a great car for people with the serial killer type personality.
>>
>>27587710
I need a hatchback for the cargo space, and the fuel economy of the Prius is king. I drive a lot. They last like 3-400k miles apparently.
>>
>>27587710
Basically, I have a car and a truck and I can sell both to cover the cost of the Prius (I'm trying to save for a house this year, so I don't want to spend money out of pocket to buy a car - so pretty hard limit of $4.5k on my budget). The Prius will haul what I want to haul (usually just appliances) better than my truck, since it's covered and reliable. I'll save $100/mo on gas too, so really it's a cashflow positive investment, provided it isn't a piece of shit. I do farmers markets in the summer too, and it'll let me bring way more product to sell, so I'll make more money there too.

My other cars are a 2006 Corolla with 215k miles, and a 1986 Chevy S10.

Unless those are manual, those trannies are time bombs
>>

Was about to post exactly this. Avoid Ford auto trannies from that time period at all costs.

bruh my parents prius experience just ended yesterday. Let me tell you about the disappointing car

>mom n dad bought a used 2008 prius with 182k miles 2.5 years ago

>paid $4700 from a dealer

>burned a massive amount of oil, (common problem) interior felt cheap, lots of interior rattles, had quite a bit of rust on the outside making it look like a junker

>over the life of the car the repairs included, exhaust pipe welded, front rotors pads, front struts, headlights polished, 12v battery, new xenon headlight bulbs, and 4 new tires.

>at 245k miles the car started having issues with the hybrid battery. Dad took it to a prius specialty shop and they said it has failed cells in the hybrid battery and also a leaking head gasket (that was surprising and unexpected to hear)

>he then sold the car back to them for $500

TL;DR My parents put 63,000 miles on a 2008 prius in 2.5 years. It burned a shit ton of oil, interior felt cheap and it needed a decent amount of work done in it's ownership. Hybrid battery and head gasket went out at the same time and the car was junked

50mpg was nice. the acceleration was pretty good. 5/10 would not recommend

get a first gen honda insight instead
>>
>>27588388
$4200 + those regular maintenance costs is not bad for 63000 miles in 2.5 years
Compare that to the depreciation loss on a new car after losing the drivetrain warranty
>>
>>27588559
Yeah if mine last that long, it will have paid for the repairs via gas savings.
>>
>>27587596
For me its GM volt, the best hybrid electric vehicle. Now the call me "drive for free"
What a great manufacturer

What OBDII sensor do I need? Is it particular to Toyota or certain generations of Prius?
>>
What’s a better deal, a 2006 w/ 179k for $4.5k or a 2013 w/ 159k for $7.5k? Both clean titles, solid car fax.

A referb battery can be had for $900 and it literally takes 30 minutes to install yourself
>>
>>27588388
I would gladly pay $4200 for 63000 miles of a shitbox.
>>
>>27591247
The 2006 one.

Second generation Priuses last up to 300k

Early 3rd generation Priuses have had headgasket issues and lower quality
>>
>>27591271
Thanks, that's what I decided too. The only downside is I can't do Uber. I thought that could be cool, so I could step down my hours at my real job and focus more on my business and finally graduating. But at least I'll my ROI with this vehicle in like 10 months. After that it's just pure savings.
>>
>>27592539
my brother does uber in a 3rd gen with over 300k on it, his engine needed rebuilt after 300k but has been great since then. I would probably spring for the 3rd gen as parts will be easier and it is a better car imo
>>

>What OBDII sensor do I need?

They're universal. I'd just get a cheap one off Amazon.

This is the one I have its $35 and it does the basics. You don't need a fancier one unless you're going to seriously get into doing more complicated repairs.

>>
>>27592579
Poop idk what to do. $7.5k really stretches my budget tbqh. But if I can make it back via Uber, it's not really a huge deal. I just want to get out of wagie zone and graduate, and the more I think about the better Uber'ing sounds.
>>
>>27591264

That's better than I thought.
>>
>>27592584
It is not great most of the time, exception is during holidays and party times where you might get worthwhile rides in a nice areas but usually it is the app taking you to pick up some asshole that you don't want in your vehicle
>>
>>27592599
The thing is, I don't have to quit my job to do it. I just tell my boss the days I want to work next week and he either schedules me or doesn't. I work for USPS at an overstaffed office, so I'm always sent out. If I don't wanna work for a month, he won't send me.

Being able to work around my classes and stuff would be awesome. So If I had classes M/W/F, I could do USPS Tue/Thurs/Sat, and Uber between classes. This would really help me finish my degree I think.
>>
I think I'll get the $4.5k '06 and just try doing doordash / uber eats on friday/saturday night to see how it goes. i don't wanna stretch my budget
>>
>>27592618
yeah definately going with this after learning about amazon flex
