i put 10 gallons in the box truck, some lucas injector cleaner, and just let it idle all day, seems to have picked up some power but it will need more treatment, cleaned up the box and got the original pintle injectors and autel out to do some more work later

I just feel sketch buying a vehicle with a recently cleared ECU, whether that be from changing the battery or clearing a code. I don't want to drop $5k on a van that isn't ready to pass emissions testing right away.

any of those vans would be 7-8k in a non emissions state, i considered making the trip to get an 99-04 super doodoo, low miles ones that dont pass smog dont even bring 4k

Hmmmm. Well, i've found a built short block for under 1k, so if my head is good, I may go that route. My last one of these cars had a warped head, that warped it so bad it couldnt be milled down anymore. Honda k20a2 engine for reference. I've gotta go bleed the clutch and fire it up today, I'm just hoping theres a chance I can get it to drive 15 mins home even if on 2 cyls, rather than pay a tow around here.

It’s easy as long as your calipers and bleed screws aren’t super rusty. If you don’t have a brake bleeder wrench, get yourself a 6pt socket to crack each of the bleeder screws loose and then use a regular wrench to open and close em. Don’t use the regular open or 12pt wrench on those soft bleeder screws to break them open for the first time because they’re easy to strip.

I like using these cheap little “one man brake bleeders” but then have somebody else pumping the pedal for you. Make sure you overflow the brake fluid reservoir tank and don’t let it run low as you bleed, and go to it. Start with the furthest away caliper from the master cylinder, so typically rear passenger side, then rear driver, then front passenger side, and front driver brakes last. Find a guide online. Pretty much you do each caliper for a couple pumps until the fluid comes out fairly clean and there’s no bubbles in the line. It’s like an hour long job the first time, costs <$20 for a bottle of brake fluid and the little bleeder bottle in pic.

Doing the valve adjustment on this H22a is making me question my sanity. The fucking adjustment screw is just so easy to turn when trying to tighten the locknut. Have to do each one 20 times at least to get it at an acceptable tolerance, and there are 16 tappet screws to adjust.

That’s straight for $30. I’ve been snagging the 6qt Havoline at Walmart lately, end up with a quart and a half to top off leaky shitboxes or a free oil change every 4-5 I do. I go with syn blend a lot on my shitbox too because 3k-5k mile oil changes on a NA American engine is fine.

I’m too old for that.

Was thinking about a spring compressor, I have a strut that needs to be swapped eventually. Picrel looks like a little bit better one. And maybe that Klein angle finder, you can lay it flat like one of those round bubbles with an X and Y axis.

Also I want to get down on a Safety Seal tire plug kit. The boomers all say they’re the best tire plugs ever, and I haven’t had a bad failure rate of Slime plugs, but it’s tempting to try them.

>$200
That looks very similar to some of the much cheaper ones on Amazon. If you’re willing to spend $200, you’re not that far away from picrel.

I keep wanting a scope but I have no idea what I actually need. Seems like the real small ones like your pic are getting cheaper and cheaper and car audio guys like them for setting gain or some shit, and some of the scopemeters for ~$100 are actually useful these days.

I don’t know enough to give you a real answer, I’m just saying for an extra $150, sometimes a little less when the sales hit, you can grab that Rigol which seems to be the electronic hobbyist’s standard. I believe that’s the model that tons of people hack to open it up, I think the 50mHz is easy to bump up because it’s one of those things where the hardware is already installed but they cut down the features on the budget model and sell the 100mHz+ model for more money.

And this Hantek model is one of the Chinese brands that is somewhat reputable. By reputable, I mean that the brand has been around for a few years and doesn’t change the name of the Amazon storefront every 3-6 months like lots of Chinesium.

I would ask the electronics thread on /diy/. Also I think the EEVBlog aussie guy tests a lot of different scopes and meters and people seem to love him.
>>

You gotta read into em and see what people are using them for and what you should expect based on the budget. I believe that’s another one of the Chinese companies that has actually been on Amazon for a minute, or some formation of it. I think the Hantek company has been around longer though. When you start seeing >200 reviews and a good chunk of them are written out and more than “Great Product! #1 customer supporting!”, there’s a good chance it’s a fair review.

>>27609946
Look at Uni-T amp clamps. It depends what you want to do because most DC clamps aren’t very good at low currents and they bounce around a ton <1A. Uni-T clamps seem better than most at lower currents. The electrician and HVAC focused AC/DC clamps are real solid >10A if you’re messing with the starter or alternator.

There’s this compact 100A Uni-T all over Amazon for about $50-$60 that was recommended to me like crazy by people who mess with electronics, but that’s not really for starter currents. I got a bigger Uni-T and it’s straight but quite large depending where you want to use it. The pic sort of shows the size compared to the Southwire.

And the Southwire was from Lowe’s, it’s solid but jumps around like +/-100mA. That’s a 400A meter and it seems to measure starters just fine on passenger cars, but I haven’t tried it on a big diesel. That Southwire stuff got discontinued when Lowe’s picked up Ideal, but they were also sold as Amazon Commercial and like a year ago those were dirt cheap on clearance.
>>
>>27609946
>>27611040
Also if you don’t want to spend alot, I have been looking at picrel for years. There’s a 30% off coupon right now too, that’s like the best price I have seen. I keep wanting to grab one to have a throwaway backup meter, but I really don’t need a 5th or 7th meter laying around.

That huge number of reviews is legit too, this brand has been selling that meter for years and the price keeps going down. Those cheaper meters are generally quite accurate too, the main issue you get with cheap meters is crappy leads and not great isolation, but if you’re messing with 12VDC, you will be fine. I just wouldn’t go sticking a cheap Chinese meter in anything >240V.

>>
>>27611040
>most DC clamps aren’t very good at low currents and they bounce around a ton <1A.
Connect a 10x coiled wire in series with your circuit and put the clamp around it. This was a common trick for old analogue needle meters that are hard to read in detail/from far away. But it helps with stabilizing a reading for low sensitivity meters as well.

>>
>>27611960
I think there's a meter for that but you can ignore it if you just flush your brake fluid periodically like you're supposed to (2 years avg). Another trick is to know how to read a multimeter for low current and put the leads in the brake fluid reservoir apparently. As it ages it becomes acidic and generates an electrical current as it becomes corrosive. Brake fluid is hydroscopic (I believe that's the word) meaning that it should have low-to-no moisture but does attract it like crazy. Even OPENED brake fluid isn't shelf stable, and you have to be aware of the age of unopened stuff too. You learn a lot of neat stuff doing your first brake flush.

I’m the T100 autist. Not necessarily a weekend project, but the shocks were done on the 2007 FJ Cruiser so it got new Bilstein 5100s and sway bar linkages over the course of a few days last week. Oh, and a factory new “propeller shaft”. Had my first experience with coilovers. Harbor Freight makes a pretty decent scissor-type spring compressor that uses the bolt off a vice to tighten it down (square cut threads), and I didn’t get myself maimed or killed, so that’s a bonus. Spring bottoms pointed to rear of vehicle as per the FSM.

I managed to get the shock/strut assemblies in without dismantling the tie rod ends. Do I still need an alignment? I’m thinking so but I’m giving it time to settle in.
>>
>>27612163
I was going to mention that, but if you’re going to be reading low DC currents and you’re willing to disconnect the circuit, you could run that through a regular non-clamp meter and it will be more accurate than a DC clamp.

And 95% of the time you don’t have extra wire to start wrapping it around even 2x.

There are some cool testers though, like amp loops that plug into the fuse slots and relays from companies like Lisle
>>
>>27612298
Here’s what was replaced. Rear struts are usually pretty easy but that rear one was an absolute fucking bastard to unfasten. That, and I had to cut the boots off the rear sway bar links in order to get locking pliers on them. Even when I managed to get an Allen wrench in the end it only held so long before it stripped AROUND the Allen wrench. Decent quality steel wrenches were not on my Harbor Freight bingo card, and yet the part went and the wrench is still golden…

FJ frame is based on Land Cruiser Prado apparently for those who probably don’t care.
>>
>>27612311
>And 95% of the time you don’t have extra wire to start wrapping it around even 2x.
Keep a coil on hand, I do.

>if you’re going to be reading low DC currents and you’re willing to disconnect the circuit, you could run that through a regular non-clamp meter and it will be more accurate than a DC clamp.
You won't know what the draw is until you read it, you won't know if it's low. Rather use a clamp than a fused ammeter on my dmm on a mystery draw. I'm mostly thinking of auto shit anyway. If you want to find a draw you can just do it at the battery. For more precise applications, yeah use a DMM.

When I bought the truck, the previous owner, or even before that, had unplugged the switch, to keep the alarm off. This makes the ECU think the driver's side door is always closed. I like having the lights come on when I open my doors, so I gotta solve that.

I FUCKING HATE WORKING ON CARS I SPENT ALL DAY COVERED IN ATF AND CANT FIND ANYTHING OBVIOUSLY WRONG WRENCHING FUCKING SUCKS I WISH I HAD MONEY TO PAY A SHOP BUT I DONT WANNA GET FUCKED FOR A $3000 TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT

Car: 2011 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4x2 (VQ40DE and RE5R05A) with 136k miles

Issue: Permanent P1774 code. Can be reset by unplugging the battery for a few mins and reconnecting, but will throw the car into limp mode (4th Gear Only) by the next drive (first drive has it stay pending). Clearing the code with a scanner does not work. I dropped the pan and valvebody this weekend, and opened up the TCM. I also ordered a new low coast clutch solenoid from AZ (Duralast TCS00540, it looks OEM Made in Japan Mitsu like the one that's in the trans).
>>
>>27614018
Here's the Sonnax cheat sheet for the code.

It's not Pressure Switch 2 because I can drive the car fine until the code comes on, it'll go into every gear. Pressure Switch 2 regulates line pressure.

It's not PNP because that's the parking neutral position switch. I can throw it into park and neutral fine.

It's not the OSS, that's the output speed sensor and I have a accurate speedo readout.

So it's either the TCM or the Solenoid. Maybe the actual low coast clutch.

At this point I don't see anything obviously wrong with the TCM. I check the pins that the solenoid goes into and they seem alright (circled). I don't know what the black stuff is, but I'll check later

Solenoid holds continuity off the car and once plugged into the TCM. Pins going to the solenoid seem okay, no cracks or splits like the YouTube videos can have shown and they hold the same resistance once the solenoid is connected (28 ohm which is spec). Both new and old solenoid have the same resistance. wiggling the solenoid while in its tcm pins don't change anything. Wiring harness inside the transmission looks okay.

I'm actually gonna pick up another solenoid because the new one has a hairline crack at the tip. Circled is where that solenoid goes into on the TCM.

At this point I'm at a loss, there's nothing obviously broken that would give a reason to throw that code. I'm about to just hit the valve body with a shitload of brake cleaner then hit all the ports with compressed air, and put it together and hope for the best. Maybe a piece of friction material made contact somewhere I'm hoping and I cleaned it out?

Filter looked good and magnets had minimal dust/wear nothing extraordinary when I dropped pan btw

It’s not terrible, that’s like burning a good amount but not leaking it out. A healthy engine should barely burn any between oil changes unless you’re really hooning it.

The interesting bit too is the TCM out of my truck looks nothing like the YouTube videos of other people who had Nissan Valvebody or Solenoid Codes. It's a newer revision possibly. The ones in the vids and forums have a black case and the pins run underneath the case. This is all in the open. Those people had to pull their TCM after it developed splits in the contacts going to the solenoids.
>>

Forgot, this is what most of the YouTube videos and stuff show. The forums don't help, they have the older style TCM like the video or a different code. And when they changed the solenoid or repaired the TCM 9/10 times the code went away.
>>
>>27614055
There’s no “Uxxx” codes?

Also the TCM, make sure it’s trucks with the same engine and/or trans. Could be the same body style but different trans. Was a little goofy when I was searching for one for the Jeep.

Nope no other codes. I never opened up the transmission on this car. When I first bought it I got that code two weeks in but clearing the computer had it go away for a few months. A year and 12k miles later, it threw my car into limp mode 3 months ago. I cleared the code by resetting the battery and it went away. Then as I'm driving to work it comes back and now I can't clear it with the computer, resetting the battery only works for the first drive.

Most of the people had these issues on early Titans, Armadas, G35, and Xterras with the broken pins. I might try to replace the ATF Pressure Switch 2 too if I can source it.

today i replaced rear drums on my vw polo. first side went good, second side feels much tighter, cant free spin, it might be getting slightly hotter when driving.
everything is new, second side was binding also before my 'repairs'.
any ideas as to how to fix this? is this even an issue? is it safe to drive? could this be a wheel bearing? (i feel it might be going out). Iichecked if handbrake cables aren’t to tight inside the car but they seem fine.
this was my first time wrenching on a car, i do not recommend drum breaks as a starter

You’re using a scan tool that shows body codes besides the Pxxxx codes, right?

When I had the bad TCM, I was getting a U code “Lost Comm w/ TCM” and was checking all the connections and grounds, and then I started getting “TCM Read Only” or some shit on a Uxxxx code and that’s when I decided to throw the TCM at it.

Yes, it gives me codes for the occasionally wrong TPMS sensors and the rear HVAC actuator. I'm using a Autel AL329 and a ELM327 scanner + Car Scanner Pro App

I bought a extra solenoid (Duralast TCS0038) I might put in the place of 1/2 in this pic. Some diagrams show #2 as also being brake coast clutch. >>27614022 not sure what is pressure switch 2 in this pic. Maybe solenoid #31 here?

Honestly I think it might just be a bad TCM, which would require a whole other transmission. Unless I find a TCM from AliExpress / eBay, but then I would have to get it programmed for my vehicle which is troublesome. A buddy of mine pointed out this burnt looking trace going towards the IC on the TCM. On the other end of that trade is the harness which looks okay but he thinks that the malfunctioning solenoid could have caused the IC to burn out. It's the same transmission used in Frontier Xterra Titan and NV van so it's not impossible to source, the problem is the labor because I don't have the resources to do a transmission swap in the street.

I don't really have the resources to swap a transmission at the moment, so I'm going to throw two new solenoids at it (Line Pressure which is the first one in the solenoid diagram, and brake coast clutch which is the last one and the one giving me the code). It'll probably be tomorrow, because it's getting late. I'm also going to try to shoot a can of electronics cleaner through the whole TCM and all the solenoids but I don't think it'll help

I just shot two cans of brake cleaner through the valve body. Will any remnants of that possibly damage the transmission. I'm going to blow it through air before I try to put it back into the vehicle.

The burnt pin does have continuity from the harness pin to the IC. Every pin looks like it's good on continuity at least the ones that are coming off the IC
>>
>>27614603
I forgot to mention accessing the TCM requires me to drop the transmission pan and valve body. My area doesn't really have pick-n-pulls so I would have to go to a salvage yard and pay for the whole transmission very unlikely they're willing to sell me the valve body that TCM is attached to

>>
>>27615093
Have you checked out the connector? Some cars have shitty drainage back there and the plugs can get crusty. If it’s bad, clean it up and get some dielectric grease on there before you plug it back in. Could be a bulb going too, sometimes the filament is shot assuming it’s incandescent but is still touching enought to look like it works.

Undiluted Pine-Sol (not generic pine oil, I tested both as I clean many carbs etc) works even better and you can clean the floor with it after filtering the crumbs or dump it down your sink to break up residual scum from normal use.

It doesn't eat plastic or rubber parts or seals. I don't bother with modern feeble carb dips (RIP the original Hydro-Seal with methylene chloride but I wouldn't clean plastics in that) since discovering how well it works in the early oughts. Try a couple jubs. Pine smell is strong so if boiling best do outdoors.
>>

Perform a leakdown test before teardown to be sure what is leaking so to be sure to cure it. Crude leakdown can be done if your compression tester has a quick disconnect by applying shop air using that.

^This. I don't do work based on what I wish was fucked up, I pull the engine then inspect and repair as necessary if it's a keeper. If it's not I usually install a used engine unless the vehicle is ancient enough (like my dentside Fords) that I can overhaul it with a fork and a large rock.

I'm slowly getting rid of my wrenchlet status. I plan to keep with 2000 Prelude SH alive as best I can and learning a ton along the way.

Swapped alternator and belt, ps belt.
Cleaned vtech solenoid and IACV on the throttle body. New spark plugs and ignition wires, significant wear and one of the wires was actually cracked in the casing going down to the sparkplug, surprised it was still working.
The big shit though was getting down to replace the intake side camshaft plug which was hemorrhaging oil. Replaced with billet part, and the 2 bolts that were holding the camshaft holder down were partially sheared. Replaced them with titanium bolts.

Taught myself how to do a valve adjustment which ended up taking about 10 hours until I got everything right, also almost all of the locknuts were seized onto the tappet screws.

Buttoned it all back up and she started perfectly, feels fucking great. Now I just have to summon the courage to do the timing belt and seals on that end of the engine in a couple years.

Reading about other peoples successes here was motivating as well.

Miata's are neat but they just don't excite me. There was an exocet the guy kinda trashed but it was cheap and I still didn't want to buy it for $1000. The lifted on off-road tires miatas are neat I guess, no idea what I'd even do with a vehicle like that.

I just checked CL for manuals, the cheapest one is $3,200 for "light frame damage, rebuilt title" with some obvious damage to a lot of stuff like rag top, windshield, and interior. Other better examples for $7000. And modern ones for $10,000.

Project bikes are nearly given away because finding good parts for 20+ year old bikes is such a pain and always expensive; think $300 Honda Carburetors for a bike in pristine condition would sell for $1200. Some bikes have 2. What a shame project cars are never that cheap. Wheres the good body but hole-in-the-engine cars for $500-1000 anymore?

Its a type with two bolts while also being seated very snug into the spindle where it'll rust & expand over the years, getting absolutely seized in the process. Good news

Either spraying the fuck out of the TCM with 2 cans of contact cleaner and blowing the valve body with brake cleaner then air did it, or it was just a sticking solenoid, but the code is gone and I put 50 miles on it. Went from archived/inactive to entirely gone after 4 drive cycles and a good 50 miles of driving.

Now my other problem. 2011 Pathfinder 4x2 with 136k miles, VQ40 same as Frontier and Xterra.

Are these normal long term fuel trims? It seems like it's running fine. I checked the air box and tb for any leaks and the vacuum lines are all new.
>>
>>27620148
Fuel trims are additive, bank 1 is showing 15.6 percent short and 13.3 percent long for a total of 28.9. Looks like a vacuum leak. You need to see if the trims go down under load. if the trims persist under load it could be the maf or the fuel pump.
>>
>>27620172
I actually think the trims go up when idling. Took that pic at a light driving home from work

I think it's the stupid intake manifold plenum spacer I added. I might email Z1 and ask if it's normal

I forgot to mention, they do go down with load to 3-5%, but get worse at idle. I can't find the leak which is annoying. I used Windex on the air box, intake, tb, and manifold plenum spacer/gasket area to check for bubbles at idle.

Are you going to use it mainly on your own car? Do your research and see which scan tools work good for which makes of car.

I’ve been happy with my $25 Veepeak bluetooth thing, although I might be limited by using it on iOS. I definitely recommend the bluetooth ones for the money. Most standard scan tools <$50 only pull the emissions codes (Pxxxx codes) and often don’t even do live data. I got the $45 Zurich from HF as my first scan tool and had to upgrade after one job because I needed live data. Then I got a $120 Autel that is decent, but honestly the $25 Veepeak bluetooth with a $10 app does about the same as the $120 Autel. And on certain models of cars, if you find a good app, the bluetooth ones might perform like a $500+ scan tool. The Veepeak with this JScan app is super good for Chrysler vehicles.

If your Crown's fan speed buttons aren't working check the blower motor resistor in the engine bay, passenger side in the firewall.
Sisters car was an '01 MGM. Fan buttons were dead

No i wasn't expecting that.
I just figured some things wouldnt be safe for catalytic converters and would be good to run if you didn't have one.

There's no QTDDTOT up and I rather not shit up the catalog. I have a manual 91 Jeep cherokee and I'd like to change the transmission fluid to hopefully keep it going longer and as a nice little treat for her. Will changing the fluid be similar to the automatic transmission fluid/filter change videos I can find or is there something huge I could fuck up? I'm a wrenchlet by any serious evaluation of my skill but I can follow guides. Finding videos for the manual is hard or I'm retarded, found one but it was a totally different engine, mine is the 6 cyl. I guess I'd appreciate tips in general for changing transmission fluid too. Thanks.

theres a drain plug and a fill plug, no filter. Should take 3-4qts of 75w90. walmart sells a flexible clear tube that screws onto the bottles to make filling easier. Fill until overflow and then put fill plug back in.

Niggers first transmission swap. Bought some guys project on FB with new (probably cheapo) suspension but a nice "JDM" engine with -10 hp compared to factory because its got these gay torque-biased cams! Stock hp can be restored with factory cams. Dude somehow destroyed his trans, i noticed his driver side CV axel was not seated all the way. I dunno if losing fluid will grenade an MT gear box like that but my spare trans I installed in it drives just fine after I fixed this 3k RPM (someone loosened the jam-nut and bolt on the TB butterfly valve to always be open, sabotage?) Both trannies are non-ABS.

I also bought a exhaust midpipe with cat so I can pass inspection. I'll be wrenching on that probably this weekend. I hate that i bought that shit but its temporary compared to the price a proper straight pipe will cost. This is just so I can get it on the road legally. I do have a 2.5" exhaust ill install when I get the rest of the pipe parts and cams. Also may need an exhaust header. Mines only 2" wide at where the runners converge into 1 pipe.

>>27623159
you add fluid untill it runs out the fill plug, modern standard shifts take atf not gear oil/90w, I don't know for sure about a a 91 but I'd bet a whole dollar you need to put some sort of atf in it.
>>
>>27623159
also one thing to make it easier is if you can get a funnel attached to a hose and run it either down the firewall or through the floor shifter hole to fill it as opposed to wrestling the faggot oil bags they'll sell at parts stores.

How much are you people paying for engine mounts?
I'm reading online about people paying like $30. I drive a 15 year old Mazda and mine are fucked. Stealership quoted $600 for one mount, which I expected. But online I'm seeing $80-150 in leaf dollars. I'm considering bringing a jack, crossing the border and changing them in the parking lot.

Nothing! The engine swap is done, 8 months work to go from carbie to EFI. Just going to events and meetups, go for a cruise and enjoy it.
Going to the radiator shop after work tomorrow to see about getting the A/C hoses adapted to the different compressor but that's it.

I'm wanting to replace all the vacuum hoses in my 1995 Toyota.

What's the difference between getting OEM rubber hoses vs aftermarket silicone hoses?

I found an OEM hose kit online but it's $180 which seems very excessive. Meanwhile a silicone hose set is around $50. I'd prefer the OEM hoses but it's just too expensive.

So, pros and cons of silicone hoses?

Got all of the carb parts and oil change/plug/filter together for the dirt bike i picked up last weekend

Took a 2hr trip to do some work on my sisters Mitsu Outlander

>tie rods
Left one was bad, did both while I was at it
>leak from additive tank
So I had this one out about five months ago to refill the bag inside the tank, and it has apparently developed two veeeery small holes. Tried using thick adhesive to glue them shut, unsure if it'll work
>ball joint left side worn out
This one I was really curious about, as it has only been 11 months since I replaced that entire control arm, bushings & joint included. The mechanic that had done the inspection wasnt wrong though - it was completely worn out. Ripped off the boot, and there was not a speck of grease, nor any sign of there ever having been.... cheap parts, I swear to god

I just want to install a double din, but the factory DVD player won't work without the oem head unit. For later model years, there is an aftermarket harness available to make aftermarket head units play DVDs on the overhead screens. Wish it was that easy for mine. Going to abandon this project and return the dash kit to Amazon. So glad I can make returns with open products.

Silicon pipes are more expensive than rubber, especially back in 1995. Rubber is "good enough" and gud enuff is the motto when mass producing something.
I say go for it and use different colors too, why not? Ask a seasoned mechanic if'n you're concerned. Post pics if you use different colors

My Grand Marquis blower motor made a clunk sound and died a while ago. It's easy to swap because the motor is by itself on the left side of the firewall. I installed the autozone version but swapped for the Motorcraft because the former had weak output.

I went to take the front end off an old f350 at the scrapper, 27mm lug nut crossthreaded. Next!

Got quoted $430 to put a side window on the van. Politely educated the gentleman on how i would like my testicles gargled.

13.5 in the van going 70 with the 18'er, towing the f150 to the field tomorrow, excited to see milage, probably no time to install injectors in box truck, they're ready now though

Got a cheap 12t press from hazard fraught, mostly to try and straighten stamped steel plates n shiet on my bird. Idk wtf im doing, but im having a good time.

Scored a cool 1g from the neighbor guy for doing brakes on his caddy and an oil change on his missus' armada. Easiest money ive made.

Hoping to get my body nicer looking and do a little autox next week, never been and i bet ill learn something if i get to run or not.

Neighbor asked me to have a look at their 2012 Volvo XC90, as it suddenly had the "Anti-skid service required" message show up, aswell as the same message for the rear parking sensors. Only fault-code I could find related to this was a communication failure with the DEM (differential electronic module).

After some googling I found people having had the same issue, with the culprit being the rear electronic module (essentially just a glorified fusebox). After some multimetering I found that there indeed is no power to the fuses going to the DEM & rear parking sensors. With the module itself being damned expensive & the fuses having constant power I opted to put a fuse jumper in each of the two and connect those straight to the positive point going into the module. The anti-skid & parking sensors now work fine, but I expect further failure of the rear module at some later point

Silicone is nice. Flexible, lasts a long ass time, stretchy and seals well, resists lots of chemicals. I mean rubber has worked ok for automotive, but so many other applications, silicone is preferable to rubbers and other plastics and it’s always a cost thing, like the cheaper models have some PVC crap and the premium uses silicone.

>I went to take the front end off an old f350 at the scrapper, 27mm lug nut crossthreaded. Next!

There are many ways to slay a nut and you can leave the wheel attached (I have) for later slaying at home or even in the parking lot.

I keep a Ken-Tool lug wrench and a long cheater pipe for jobs like that and would bring it next trip if needed to snap the stud. If they don't allow angle grinders drilling the joint between lug and stud then splitting with a chisel (I weld handles to mine) is one of many options. I also have a small oxy-acetylene torch set I use to shorten surplus steel to fit my trailer and those easily was off lug nuts.

Self and bro use a garden wagon for salvage runs and pack it with just the gear we expect to need and hide additional gear in his Suburban.

Keep an eye out for long straight pitman arms as they make great striking wrenches if you weld an impact adapter to them. I shove an extension into the adapter to hold the wrench straight and keep my hand out of danger then use a hand sledge (or my bro with a larger sledge).
