AE86 came with the same engines they put in normal corollas (as well as performance versions of those engines). GR86 comes with an unreliable special snowflake engine.
Also, the styling is shit. No clear lines. Not an actually usable car when it comes to passenger and cargo space. No popup headlights.

Damn right. If they're not smart enough to look both ways before they cross the street, fuck 'em.

The 90's economy crisis in Japan.

This made Toyota so cucked they straight up sold the rights for 2zz-ge RWD setups to Lotus. Toyota didn't even allow themselves to use the 2zz in the MR2 Spyder.

And so the Toyota Matrix, the car that should have been a fully authentic AE86 successor, was a (fun) FWD-only shitbox.

The Matrix was almost rebooted into a proper (supercharged) sports hatch with AWD but then the recession stopped that from happening.

And then someone Toyota thought it was a great idea to give that legacy to a SUBARU.

Toyota had some external circumstances that made things complicated but I will never understand how far they went to cuck themselves out of their potential this badly.

>And then someone Toyota thought it was a great idea to give that legacy to a SUBARU.
its because toyota are lazy japs, and subaru already had compact platform built for a longitudinal engine and transmission in the form of the impreza, so all they had to do was make the awd fuck off and mess with the engine a bit to make it slightly less subaru. unless you would rather toyota have used a tacoma platform, engine and transmission for their sports coupe cus thats all they had in terms of rwd 4 cyls with manual transmissions

So the curse almost hit Toyota again where covid almost killed GR Yaris and GR Corolla?

In order to be a proper successor, the modern 86 should've been a more practical everyday car with an I4 and perhaps a liftback design. It's a shame this sort of car (lightweight RWD coupe that retains a great deal of practicality) died.
Since the AE86 (and many other similar cars like the Manta) was pretty good as a rally car, I suppose the GR Yaris is actually a closer successor, being a sporty compact car with rally cred, and it becomes quite practical (as much as a tiny car can be) with the rear seats folded down.

FWD disqualifies the Matrix.

should have put a i4 in it but that probably wouldn't have meet safety standards

and then you bought a lime green automatic camaro. And then the rest is herstory :^)

Imagine if we could have had a 2ZZ-GE RWD Corolla liftback in the mid 00s.

> FWD disqualifies the Matrix.

I know. But there’s a timeline out there where it’s RWD or AWD, and better VVTL-I engines.

The Matrix was PERFECT for the legacy of the AE86. As it is in our timeline, the XRS is a fun ride.

If it was RWD, it would been this century’s version of the AE86. Grocery getter shitbox by day, fun shitbox to race around in at night.

Such a combination of lots of utility and fun was perfect to continue that vision.

But we couldn’t get that in this timeline. And it’s disappointing.
>>
>>27606258
God if only. As I said, there’s another timeline out there.

Such cars also came with a ton of engine options. Imagine if the proper AE86 successor came with everything from a frugal I3 or some placeholder engine that you're going to swap out, to a decently powerful V6 or even V8.

>We put lé boxer in it for lower centre of gravity! Remember it's not about power, its about handling
>McDonald's struts

Why the fuck they didn't use an even more inferior motor to free up enough room to create an even better suspension system is beyond me. I would gladly take less power and a 1000 less rpms for an optimised powerband
>>
>>27606417
they used a subaru boxer because toyota didnt have any small 4 cyls with a longitudinal setup other than truck motors. they used macphearson because its a subaru chassis. why do people expect actual work from japs?
>>
>>27606417
the motor is fine, the powerband feels good in the new one, the handling is very sharp. Gimping the engine even more to give it a wishbone in the front is just crazy, just buy a miata then. The rear is multi-link and that's where it matters. 99% of posters commenting on this car have never even driven it. The memes about the engine are goofy too, subaru engines haven't been bad in 20 years. The people who whine about them are mostly vapers who over boost them, the NA motors can run for a quarter million miles like most modern japanese engines. The car is supposed to be a poor man's porsche boxter

New car has torque pretty much above 2.5k. Not the prettiest sounding engine, but it certainly gets the job done. I will say the engine loves to rev out to redline though.

Someone should honestly try a 2zz swap on one of these.
>>
>>27607099
It'll go from 210-230whp to 160-170whp on a good day, or the same output as a FA20
>>
>>27607099
Too much RnD and custom fabbing for not a lot of gain. If oiling is an concern, there's better engine options for getting the same power.

Ultimately though, the car is pretty strung out from the factory. Just upgrade the FA24 and call it a day, or throw some K series engine in it if you're worried about "mUh RtV" or oil starvation. Keep in mind, there's a bigger oil pan is currently being tested by varis, looking very promising.

2zz is dogshit in anything other than an mr-s that does nothing but conefag. mr-s needs a 3sgte and 300whp.
